Subject: Brother Captain Varden The Forsaken of the Grey Knights' 3rd Brotherhood
|
 |
Courageous Space Marine Captain
|
Brother Captain Varden, also known as the forsaken, was the longest serving Brother Captain the Grey Knights have had, seconded by Captain Stern. Varden was known as the Forsaken. This is because, unlike many Brother Captains and Grand Masters, he was never a Paladin. He abandoned his quests, and brought great dishonour to himself. Varden served under the then, Justicar Draigo, and was assinged to his Terminator Squad shortly after Kaldor's victory over M'kar the Reborn on Acrelem. The two, furture Brother Captain, and soon to be Chapter Lord and Living Legend, immediately took a shine to each other. When Lord Draigo departed alone to face M'kar the Reborn, Varden was one of the first to protest, and the most downcast to learn of the loss of his old friend and mentor afterwards. Draigo always seemed to be the better of the two however. He was always 1 step ahead of varden. He was promoted to first squad Justicar, Varden was promoted to Justicar of Draio and his squad. When Varden first embarked on his quest to become a paladin, Draigo had been a Captain for nealy 15 years. In the space of 2 years, he completed the first 7 quests on his way to Paladinhood. He never completed the 8th and final quest. For a Paladin, the final quest is to slay one of the 666 most powerful Daemons to manifest in the mortal realm, armed with only his Force Sword and its True Name. Varden was particularly unfortunate The beast chosen for him to slay was none other than An'ngrath the Unbound, Exalted Champion of Khorne, greatest of his Bloodthirster, and a key member of the Conclave Diabolus, 111 greater Daemons the Chapter kept especially close watch on. He was forseen by the Pronosticars to lead an Exalted Bloodmarch in the Ultima Swegmentum in 17years time. Normally, a Paladin was to fight his quary alone, but this was a threat thery Chapter could not ignore, and dispatched the 1st, 2nd and 3fd Brotherthoods, led by Kaldor Draigo, and none other than Grand Master Atermis Neublos of the 3rd company During the long battle, Grand master Artimis, supported by no less than 3 Nemesis Dreadknights and a score of Dreadnoughts, as well as a pair of Stormravens and Varden, took the fight directly to An'ggrath, leaving Draigo in chrage of the greater battle. The battle, however, swiftly went against the the Warriors of Titan. An'ggrath's forces oevrwhelmed much of the battleground, slaying many Grey Knights in the process. In the midst of the fighting, in which Varden and Artimis were the only survivors of the strike force sent to slay An'ggrath, fell back to Warden's Keep, the gigantic Defence laser that stood guard over the planet, not that it had any effect for this invasion. Artemis was slain in single combat with An'ggrath. Fighting back to back, Draigo and Varden, friends for untold wars and forecver more, took the fight directly to the Exalted Champion of Khorne, slaying his bodyguard of Khornate Heralds with ease, and smashing the strength from the Soul Grinder in their way. They fought side by side, fending off attacks from all sides and wiining the duel i9n the process. They defeated An'ggrath, but then the Daemon, momentarily ignoring his dire injuries, rose up and his mighty axe smashed into Kaldor, knocking him out cold and splintering hi shield to matchwood. It was then Varden had his chance. Rising up, taking Draigo's sword in one hand and his own Nemesis Force axe, crafted by his own hand, in the other, he fought, nearly slaying the Greater Daemon and earning his right to walk in the Hall of Champions. But he didn't. As An'ggrath lay, waiting for the blades of silver and tempered iron to pierce his heart, a cry came from behind. The Grey Knights were losing badly, and were falling back to the fortress' insides. Varden had a decisicion to make. Slay An'grath, become a Paldin, but lose the battle, the planet, unleash a Daemonic horde onto the galaxy and condemn his brothers to their deaths. Or leave the planet, and destroy the horde with bombardments. It was the gretaest joy of Lord Draigo, at each great feats, to say how it was Varden's characteristics as a Grey Knight and a leader of men, a saviour of humanity and all that, that he chose the latter. Teleporting his forces out, he destroyed the planet with Damascus Pttern Cyclonic Warheads, and in doing so, gave An'grath time to escape into the Warp and reseal the portal. Varden had abandoned his quest. he had brought great dishonour to his name. He had chosen to save his fellows instead of destroying Khorne's greatest servant. He had not gained the right to walk in the hall of Champions. It was for this reason, newly promoted Grand master Draigo, declared him the new Brother Captain. He was given the right, by Lord Geronitan himself no less, to lead his Paladin Berothers into batle, and declared, the Forsaken. This title was not a chastisment nor a curse. It stands for his full title. He who would forsake himself, in the name of duty and brotherhood. If Draigo and Varden are in the same army, then 1 squad of Paladins may benefit from one of the special abilities chosen from the Grand Strategy entry. This does not count towards the D3 units that may normally benefit from Grand Strategy. In addition, it does not need to be the same benefit, for example they may gain the 'Unyielding Anvil' ability, while the D3 units chosen as per normal gain the Spear of Light ability Forsaken If Varden joins a unit of Paladins consisting of at least 5 models, which is joined only by Varden, then he and the unit is Fearless. If there is another IC joined to the unit this does not take effect.

I really do like your rules, not to sound rude but it is a lot better than other rules that I have seen you post, well done. The only issues that I have...
Points, well, I'm on holiday in England and don't have my book or my army builder program with me, so I'm no help there
Stats are fine, well done
Wargear I'm cool with, maybe not psychotroke grenades, no one else special character wise has the shiny grenades do they? (Apart from one of the inquisitor characters I think) so maybe thats not necessary
Special Rules are all ok, probably need to fix the wording on the first one, 'long time no see'.
Perhaps it should read more as ;
If Draigo and Varden are in the same army, then 1 squad of Paladins may benefit from one of the special abilities chosen from the Grand Strategy entry. This does not count towards the D3 units that may normally benefit from Grand Strategy. In addition, it does not need to be the same benefit, for example they may gain the 'Unyielding Anvil' ability, while the D3 units chosen as per normal gain the [forget what the scout one is called] ability.
And the fearless thing is fine, I don't see a problem with one unit. Maybe only while he is with them, and so long as he is the only IC in the unit? no real reason, just to stop you lumping all your ICs into the fearless unit to create some fearless deathstar.
And the fluff, well, people will have problems with it (Storm shields probably don't splinter into matchwood) and again, I don't have my GK dex on me, so I don't know past masters names and what not, but try to steer clear of making up names if you did, or make sure if there was a current grand master at the time that he is there and not a made up one, I'm sure someone somewhere would have a problem with you did.
But really yeah, good job, much better all around than past goes (even though I thought some of them were really cool, like an assassin master, such a cool idea, just pretty damn hard to make work)

Glad someone has finally posted.
Ok, so no psykotrokes.
I was writing those rules a nifght, so wording would be a good idea to improve on. I'm just going to copy and paste your words. Ps, the Scout ability is called Spear of light.
Suppose the fluff could be better, but then again, we are dealing with Energy Daemons of an alternate demension, fighting, super-superhumans with magic powers and silver and iron baldes, armoured in adamantium and "ceramite", in the 41st mellenium.
Aas for the Grand master, the only Grand masters mentioned that I could find were Mordrak, Draigo and Geronitan, who was Chapter Lord before Draigo.
As for the last comment, hell yeah its hard to work with! I'm at a complete blank.
Though I was just hit by an idea, so have a look at that thread in about an hour for an update.
