What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

How do you come to this conclusion when the article states "Hobby Centres around the world will be running massive games of Warhammer 40,000 to celebrate the eagerly anticipated Horus Heresy novel by Dan Abnett, Know No Fear."
It doesn't even say anything about the 40K anniversary.

Given how mediocre the current chaos codex is, I think we all know how this is going to end.
But the destruction of the Ultramarines, eh? Could GW actually...advance the story? I'll check with my pal Satan, see if he's had any snow lately. If so, I might just be intrigued.

I think it would be really cool if the Ultramarines got thrashed in the campaign, and while they weren't wiped out they were at least brought down to being understrength or something in the fluff. I don't like the idea of any entire armies getting wiped out of the game, even if it's just specific builds of certain armies. Considering that it's Marines and IG vs. the two Chaos books though, it's probably going to be more than a little bit stacked.

9/10 people don't realize that the battle is supposed to be a recreation of the battle of Calth which is coming out this month. That said, I fully believe that the Ultramarines will win and go on to destroy every other renegade and legionnaire. The result will leave Chaos fan boys without any Chaos marines to play and they will be retconned out of existence.

Oh how suspenseful. I wonder who will win...
I dare GW to commit the advancement of 40k fluff to the outcome of this campaign. If Ultramarines lose this campaign, I want them pulled off the shelves, out of the advertising, and declared annihilated (like Tyranids did to Scythes of the Emperor.) Their models confined to the classic range.
If Chaos loses... Well that's pretty much the status quo for them. They run away as always with no permanent damage sustained. Boooooriiiing!
But who am I kidding, even if Ultramarines lose every battle, GW will declare that they stoically fought for every inch of ground with unflinching persistence, successfully driving back the superior numbers of Chaos once again. Which is why this campaign will probably be lame with another predictable outcome.
If I played Chaos, I'd have no interest in this. No matter how many battles you win, you still lose the war.

And 1/10 people don't realize that's not true. Bolded for emphasis: GW article wrote:Ten millennia ago, the Word Bearers struck and Calth burned. At great cost, the Ultramarines drove their enemies from the world and into the darkness. Now they have returned. In the ruins of Calth and across the worlds of Ultramar, Chaos forces led by the Word Bearers take their revenge on the defenders of the Imperium.

I just had a quick look through the codex, and I believe the campaign is based on this: Ultramar comes under renewed assualt from the forces of Chaos. M'kar the Reborn, clad in mortal flesh once more, leads the onslaught against Tallasar. Other warlords attack Calth, Espandor and Tarentus. Marneus Calgar recalls all Ultramarines forces to defend Ultramar, dispatching a reinforced Battle Company to each threatened planet. Calgar himself accompanies the 2nd Company to defend Tallasar, determined to slay M'kar a hundred times over if need be. Given that M'kar was a Word Bearer, it wouldn't be unreasonable for this to be the same battle.

I want Tau pulled from the shelves cuz I find them stupid and they don't grim dark! And then get rid of the cadians because abbadon should have won! And then get rid of space wolves cuz furries make me feel bad! And then get rid of tyranids cuz I don't like bugs cuz they bite me! And then get rid of eldar cuz elves are stupid an ugly an they can't even purple! Then get rid of dark eldar because they're too skinny! And then get rid of blood angels because they're the color of women in that part of the month! And get rid of daemons because mommy said I can't pray to those! And then there will be chaos and I can train them to be cool because my chaos are unique an da best because they are the best! Because I hate other people's hobbies and they can't have them because 48k is mine and I say what it is and I don't want space marines because I hate them and am probably playing the wrong game because I hate space marines!

Considering that it's Marines and IG vs. the two Chaos books though, it's probably going to be more than a little bit stacked. Sadly yes . Significant events like this should be left until after Chaos gets its update. Purely taking the background into account though: Ultramar, including the Chapter and the pdf forces, would be severly weakened form Hive Fleet Behemoth, providing Kor Phaeron the opportune moment to invade. Yes, it was two hundred years ago the Chapter itself would be near full strength, but Ultramar's economic infrastructure probably would not have fully recovered. Ultramar would be in a sever recession at the least, and in such circumstances, people will become more desperate and more willing resort to unconvential, even radical measures to regain control over their financial wellbeing, the future of their families, etc. Private political groups, communities and so on will crop up, in secret at first, but they would gradually gain more influence over llocal and then popular culture. The recession becomes more severe, and now minor riots have to be dealt with by the Arbites. Some of these 'groups', or more accurately sects, attract more rebellious personalities, whilst others seek to better the financial situations of its members. For quite a while, the Word Bearers have since leapt at this opportunity, founding some of the Sects directly, whille gradually altering the beliefs of preexisting ones to become more pliable to their extended influence. Even after the recession lessens and almost leaves entirely, the sects remain, some sponsoring the families who have joined them or pooling the wealth of every member to be distributed equally. Of course some of them would be discovered by authorities and accordingly destroyed, but most exist unnoticed. All of them have been of have become influenced greatly by the Word Bearers and their beliefs have swayed toward independance of the individuals and freedom from the prejudice and expectations of society equality of gender, sexuality, ethnicity essential they have become centred around the concept of freedom from any preesablished social norm, some more so than others. In short, half of the Word Bearers Legion have sowed cults for two hundred years in Ultramar from their refuge in the Maelstrom. Many renegade Chapters and warbands ally with them, and the Alpha Legion would probably have some involvement in this plot. Most of the other Legions are occupied with the 13 Black Crusade at the time, but wouldn't have the ability to leave the Eye anyway. Some Legion warbands outside the Eye would become involved, of course. Calgar would request most of the Successor Chapters to aid Ultramar's defense, obviously, as well as the Imperial Guard. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tau Empire would take the opportunity to expand its borders and have some role in the campaign. I wouldn't like the Ultramarines to be completely annihalated, unlike some people. Most of Ultramar should be subjugated, while Macragge and a couple of other planets are on the verge of falling.

Don't worry, it'll end up like the Eye of Terror Campaign if Chaos wins anyways. G.W will just twist the victory so that the Ultra Marines win anyways. But, since the battle has already occurred, and the campaign changes nothing, I have no interest in it.
