So as not to clutter the new releases thread for those that are actually interested in LOTR stuff, i thought i'd continue this one seperately.
Orignally spotted by Sublimebrushwork over on the Wamp forum, i thought i'd share this with you guys.
Orki wrote:Someone pointed out earlier that the Casualties set is not advertised as being made from Failcast.
GW just wouldn't miss a trick like this surely? No Failcast logo, nothing. just this...
"This pack contains eight casualties for The Lord of the Rings. These models are finely detailed resin cast miniatures. They are supplied as eight separate..."
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat750002a&prodId=prod1460159a
Is trhis the beginning of the end of Failcast? I dang well hope so! It could be an error, and i've not seen the WD to cross reference this.
Anyone else feel like celebrating?

it would be absurd by them to clsoe Finecast so early. We will see, maybe they just assume that being resin it is Finecast!

IIRC, they've already used that wording with another kit. So they're not getting rid of Finecast, they're just not using a name rightly associated with expensive, poorly cast models.

Considering that all the other Finecast LotR items listed under Advanced Orders are also described as being "finely detailed resin cast miniatures", there's nothing to draw here.
The other products come in their own nicely-printed boxes/blisters whereas the casualties probably come in the featureless White Citadel box/blister.
There is absolutely no indication that this is a trend.

A single exception does not make the rule. Perhaps we can wait for a second instance of this happening before jumping to conclusions especially when the rest of the Advance Orders seems to suggest that Finecast is not ending anytime soon.

I believe these are going to be the same type of resin that is used in the basing kits like: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470007a&prodId=prod1400002a. This is a harder resin that is similar to Forge World stuff and is more meant to be used as scenery on bases.

I really hope its not the end of finecast, because if it is then GW will admit to the world that they were wrong, thereby causing the apocalypse 11 months earlier than the mayans predicted.
But really if finecast fails then GW will be "forced" to increase prices as the materials they had been using failed to live up to the standards they require. The retooling costs and repackaging will be a burden on the company that will have to be passed along to the customer.

I dont understand why they dont just cast everything in plasic. Everyone likes plastic. As a serious question though is there anything that would prevent GW from casting the entirety of their range in plastic?

It's just branding. Finecast has such a bad name that they're reducing their use of it. Probably the same resin.

The cost, among other things. Finecast-models are cast with silicone molds while plastic models are cast using molds out of machined steel (injection molding). The steel molds are expensive as hell, while silicone molds are very cheap compared to these. Most Finecast-models probably won't sell enough to justify machining a mold for them, so they just go with rubber. However, after a certain point, it will be more cost-effective to use steel molds vs. rubber molds (kits that sell a lot, like Tac Squads).
I'm speculating because I don't have any real sales figures, but I think it's reasonable to assume that's the case.

This is what I thought. Finecast has got such a reputation within the internet community that they're ditching the name, but just selling it anyway.

Plastics are hella expensive to make. Well, the plastic itself is cheap, but making the molds for everything is nuts. Like $10K per sprue, minimum. I'm actually pretty impressed that they do as much plastic as they do, but ya can't do everything.. over time maybe, but not all at once. So resin is here to stay, weather it's finely cast or not

Yeah, cutting sprues for plastic kits is expensive. Hence why it's usually only the better-selling ones that are plastic, so they can make the money back on them.
