I plan on using a knarloc in an upcoming casual game. However, when I looked up the rules, they were a bit underwhelming for the most part. That is until I found out that they auto-wound at AP2 on hits of 6, Rend vehicles with +D6, score, and were classed as infantry and thus could board my devilfish in squads of up to 10.
After hearing that, my friend agreed to let me alter the rules.
Greater Knarloc[100pts] - Heavy Support (Requires a Kroot Carnivore Squad)
WS4 BS3 S6 T5 W5 I3 A3 Ld7 Sv-
Type: Monstrous Creature
Unit Size: 1-3
Equipment: Bolt-Thrower - R24" S4 AP6 Assault 3
Special Rules: Stealth, Move through Cover, Fleet, Fearless, Rending, Feel no Pain
Options:
May Upgrade Bolt-Thrower to:
Heavy Kroot Gun[10pts]
R24" S7 AP4 Assault 2
Explosive Bolts[15pts]
R36" S6 AP6 Assault 1 Small Blast
Are these rules fair?

Looks good to me - though might need a bit of a points bump to 120-130. You could even stick it right in the Carnivor squad, for extra awesome, or allow Kroot Hounds to be taken with it as ablative wounds and cover provision - in which case I'd pop it to 150 points because of the increase in livability.

Seeing as it's got no armor save and is going to have a devil of a time with cover saves unless it is in area terrain, there is already a good hit to it's survivability so I don't think the points bump is that necessary.
How many to a unit?

I think I'm going to go with 1-3 like the IA3 rendition. Do MCs still get count as in cover when in area terrain? I thought they were treated as vehicles with the 50% rule?

Sorry, didn't realize you dropped field-craft, which I think might have given them a cover save in the forest regardless of coverage (book isn't handy so not sure).
But yeah, as a MC with no intrinsic save, these guys won't last long on the field.

I gave them stealth since I think it makes more sense than the old fieldcraft rule.
Also, they do have a FNP save. However they can still get instant killed by S10 weapons like demolisher cannons and railguns. 5 wounds gone in a poof.

Sorry for double posting, but it looks like Forge World has updated IA3 and Greater Knarlocs along with.
I heard this from Advanced Tau Tactia, so I don't I'll really need these rules anymore. Thanks anyway for your posts.

They have fieldcraft which gives them +1 Cover in, but only in "jungles/forest" which I thought was stupid so I changed it to stealth
