What are the best upgrades for a Daemon prince to be competitive because my friend made a list and he had 2 daemon princes but they looked a bit expensive. Here is what he had for them. He just started playing warhammer40k and I am trying to help him out.

Daemon prince- wings, iron hide, mark of Khrone, blessing of the bloodgod, Death strike, insterment of chaos- 210 points

Daemon prince- wings, iron hide, mark of nurgle, noxious touch, aura of decay- 230 points

Those are really expensive. In general for Daemons (these are Daemons DP's who are Heavy not HQ).

The nurgle looks okay but lose Aura of Decay

A Khorne prince should lose instrument and death strike. Usually noone uses a Khorne one though, instead Tzeetch with bolt/gaze or slaanesh with hide, might, musk, wings, aura.

Wings & iron hide are far too costly overall. 30 skavenslaves to move 12" isn't worth it as it pushes your base cost upto 140+ pts! Iron hide's 3+ save might sound really good and look tasty on paper, but keep in mind the types of guns that are typically shooting your monstrous creature; lascannons, meltas, krak missiles, railguns, rokkits, assault cannons, psycannons, lances of all names, etc... So much ap3 or better and/or rending that your shiny 3+ save means crap all.

Best ting to do is keep your princes cheap and get more on the table. For example, a Tzeentch prince excells at providing highly accurate anti-tank fire with just his mark + bolt of tzeentch. Plus he can still clean up depleted units since his base stats are so solid.
Guiding rule with daemon princes: 3 cheap princes are way harder to deal with than 1-2 tooled-up princes.

If you mark them with anything other than Tzeetch you need Iron Hide.

If you kit them for CC you probably need wings, they are just too slow w/o them and the wings let you charge rather than be charged. I agree they are expensive. The only DP I might not take them on is Slaanesh and I would put Pavane on him.

+1 the tzeentch DP build

i run mine with mark of tzeentch, Master of Sorcery, Bolt and Gaze and he wipes the floor all the time, he stays out of cc for enough and then by late game his 4+ invulnerable save in cc is great and he has enough base stats to munch on down through your opponents remaining forces. but thats my expensive version.

the real trick is maneuvering, if you can keep him fireing on good ranged units and then bring him in for cc with normalish troop choices or a head to head with a HQ he will do great...at least thats my experience, you can drop the MoS n mark for a even cheaper unit and lay a great beat down from a distance maybe even fielding 2 of them.

the nurgle prince is good fun to but just needs to be a little cheeper otherwise when he goes down n he will be a target it will really hurt.

With only 2 shooting attacks you do not need MoS, a MC can shoot 2 weapons already.
