Hey guys I decided to purchase the assault on black reach today. I would really like to know what you guys think a good chapter would be for space marines and a good clan for orks. I have never been really good at painting but i still enjoy it. Maybe something where i dont have to be a lot if different colors yet. I am on a budget so it will take me time to build up colors and such. Any tips will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In Firenze kicking Templar arse.

GOFFZ! Traditional Green with Black Leather! And your kinda stuck on smurfz unless you do a bit of modeling. But, if you are willing, go with a custom chapter!

A Wise Ork once said a profound word: WAAAAAAAGH! Then he got trampled in the incoming stampede!

Black primer for the Orks.

You could hand paint the undercoat, but it does take a while to get a smooth coat. It's a lot quicker to spray. If you're worried about what effect the spray might have on the plastic test on a bit of sprue first. You'll want to shake the can for at least 2 mins and spray in half second bursts.

Welcome to the hobby, btw!

Sorry, I should say that black primer is better for models that have darker colours, and white lends itself more to models with bright colours. Or you could get a grey primer, which is (obviously) in between.

Cool. I just thought of something else the whole thinning the paint. What would be the best way to do that and how does a was work I'm kinda confused on that

Just use water.

The basic aim is to make it so that the paint isn't so thick that it obscures the detail of the model when it's dry, but at the same time not too watery or you'll need a lot of coats of paint.

Another decent thing for the marines especially, pick the color you want and get a can of that color spray paint, in matte if you can but a matte finish is always a good idea. Bam, primer and basecoat in one shot...most of the job done. Flesh out the details and the fiddly parts and the gun, give it a wash, done.

I shall express myself to the fullest, regardless of state or local laws. -me-

Personally, just go with the colours you like as long as they don't clash it should work out fine. Some like white, black and yellow can be a touch harder but are worth the added effort.

Welcome to the hobby! Feel free to pm me if you have other questions as for painting just wet your brush then dab off the water, dip up a small amount and wipe off excess. Then you wont clog details hope that helps

I suggest Goffs and Salamanders

Orks is easy to paint just prime white, denehb stone with a wash of Thraka green will do well for the ork's skin. Since the armor is black just paint it that way.

Salamanders could just be based white and wash green, skin is just painted black (part of their fluff, their mutants or something...).

I cant stress the importance of thinning your paints, if you get better at painting later on you may want to repaint them. Also, a bottle of spray paint is a wise investment

Hey Jshbell454!

If you are just starting the hobby then you might find my beginners article of some use.

It gives basic advice on what brushes to look for, paints and how to avoid buying far more than you need, handy painting accessories to use and how to highlight, shade, and drybrush tabletop standard.

Might come in handy for your Orks Its there in my sig.

Gesso is the best thing to use if you're restricted to priming by hand. It gives good coverage, a smooth finish, and is very forgiving if you don't water it down exactly right.

Well here's what you do:
1) Prime the miniatures before painting(this is really important so the paint adheres to the mini).

2) Start painting. You don't have to be good at painting, just give it your best shot.

3) I suggest you use Krylon primer. They are available in black, white, or grey. Use black primer if your color scheme is dark and white primer if your color scheme is bright. DO NOT use the primer in high humidity or your minis can get messed up.

4) Seal them when you are all done painting for protection. This way your minis wont get scratched easily or lose color. Use gloss varnish first, for the protection, then use a matte varnish to eliminate the glossy sheen. You should use krylon varnishes or testors dullcote, they are very good for sealing your minis.

5) Remember to enjoy your minis even if you think they didnt come out well, they are still your artwork.

I like the gold. Seems more grimdark than simple devlan mud wash.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

The gold looks nice, but you could do a bit of tidying up; give the blue a wash of badab black (if you don't have it, just add lots of water to some black paint) then paint the blue over the top again leaving the recesses black. It may take a couple of coats of blue to get a nice solid colour but don't rush!. Patience is a key skill to painting especially for a beginner

how'd you do that gold? It looks really nice!
The blue could use some more attention though, it looks too dark....
Just put a coat of lighter blue on it.....

i got assault on black reach at christmas and i went for salamanders and goff clan as well the way i pain them is this:
Salamanders:
undercoat with black
go over with knarloc green then highlight with snot green
use boltgun metal for the gun
then add in whatever detail you want!

Goff:
undercoat with black
do the skin with knarloc green
leather in tallern flesh
and cloth with mechrite red
then add in whatever detail you want!

most of these colours you get in the starter set so if you get that your sorted.

600+ (at least 600 not been bothered to count the rest yet busy painting)
