Subject: Bird of Prey Update: pics for weathering tutorial
UPDATE: Look towards bottom for updated pics for possible weathering tutorial
So here is the first tank I ever painted. It was painted like crap, let me tell you. White is hard to pull off even when you are experienced, and I was NOT experienced.
Well, I've been trying out some weathering techniques and thought I would see what kind of effect they would have. WOW. Good weathering can even save a crappy paint job. Would love some critisizm and suggestions on this.

Even more fun, after that I decided to try something completely new, a Klingon Bird of Prey. Not what we usually deal with here, I know, but I thought you guys might appreciate it. I'm still working on the lights for the interior, so only the top half is done. I also found an awesome conversion kit for giving it movable wings.
Again, would really appreciate some feedback and suggestions:

Top view, which shows some good weathering:
And some closer looks at the weathering. You can see some beam impacts here:
A closer shot of the hinge action:
And what I call 'random' impacting here, possibly caused by kinetic ordinance bursting:
For those interested, the techniques I'm using are:
* black oil wash for oil stains
* scrubbed in black oil wash for a general oily patina
* black oil wash for lining
* black weathering powder for soot and scorch marks
* various red and brown weathering powders for rust and dust accumulation
* burnt umber oil wash and scrub for a general 'dirtying' effect
* random blast effects: sponge applied paint chipping followed by mithril silver at the epicenters, and then black weathering powder for scorching
* beam impact blast effects: similar to above, but the initial chipping is applied via brush instead of sponge.

Darn. I was hoping for a bit more suggestions and criticisms. I'm really beginning to feel peaked on the techniques I know and need some ideas on what else to try.. Weathering questions never seem to get much response on Dakka.

Pretty awesome weathering - if you have time, it would be great if you could perhaps write something for the oil paints article - your bird of prey would be great for illustrating an article in of itself
@SilverMK2Thanks for the tutorial link. That might be a good idea. I'm thinking I would probably lean more towards the soot colors than the mud, as I don't see there being much mud in space, but i think it would add some nice texture to the model.
I'm also thinking of using the airbrush and some thinned black paint to add some some streaking on the wings/engine.
I could add some pictures to the oil article, I know it helped me a lot. Is it supposed to be public editable?
I guess maybe I should start thinking about making an article. I've been hesitant as it seems a bit presumptuous, but I've sure gotten a lot out of them, and if no one wrote until they felt they were professional level painters we probably wouldn't have many articles.
Soot would work - urban rubble often kicks up a lot of dark dusts - the I think texture would really add some extra depth
All the articles are editable by dakka members (though I think a couple are locked). Please feel free to add some articles - we are really missing out on stuff on using oil paints (which is why I added a couple on using comments from other users and painting guides/etc even though I am not actually a very good painter myself ).
If you want help with the coding or anything, I can give you a hand.
Finished the under wings of the Bird of Prey, and got pictures for a weathering tutorial. I forgot to take a picture of the finished product, so here are some pics I took for the tutorial. Still not sure if there is enough interest to justify writing one though.
