Subject: First Tournament - 4 Games with 1850pts of Space Wolves! (Complete!)
Recently I participated in the Game Summit WH40K tournament with my 1850 Space Wolves list. I was feeling pretty good about it, but the competition was going to be stiff – there would be plenty of Grey Knights, which I was sorely lacking practice against; The last time I fought a Grey Knights army was back when their Codex was released. However, I was up for the challenge...
My list was a lite-Razorspam with some assault elements. I prefer assaulting with my units, so I wanted to work that into my list rather than go full-out Razorspam, while keeping it cheap and competitive.
HQ Wolf Priest
Rune Priest (Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane)
ELITES
3x Wolf Guard (3x Combi-melta, 2x Powerfist, 1x Power Weapon)
TROOPS
10x Grey Hunters (2x Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen)
8x Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
8x Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino)
5x Grey Hunters (TLLC Razorback)
5x Grey Hunters (TLLC Razorback)
HEAVY SUPPORT
Land Raider Redeemer (Multi-melta)
6x Long Fangs (5x Missile Launcher, TLLC Razorback)
6x Long Fangs (5x Missile Launcher, TLLC Razorback)
I arrived at the tournament early in the morning and measured up the competition. Most of the armies actually looked like something I could handle – maybe I had a shot at the top spots after all! My goal for the day: get into the top 10 for generalship.
For those curious, the armies broke down as such:
Grey Knights/Tyranids/Space Marines/Blood Angels: 5
Chaos Space Marines: 4
Imperial Guard/Orks: 3
Dark Eldar/Space Wolves/Eldar: 2
Dark Angels/Necrons/Black Templar/Chaos Daemons: 1
Honestly, I was surprised that there weren't more Space Wolves armies – after all, Dakka still believes they are the #1 army out there, but in this particular meta it looks like the Grey Knights would be the ones to beat.
The games would all have different scenarios which were kept secret until we arrived at the tournament. Each game would be 1 hour and 45 minutes with the standard random game length in place.

Game #1 – Space Wolves vs Space Marines (Aurora Marines) When the first game started, I discovered that my first opponent was a Space Marine player named Jonathan, who was running a very nicely painted Aurora Marines army. However, I noted that it was a rather casual list – I should be able to beat it with relative ease. I believe this is a close approximation of what his force included:
HQ Chaplain (Storm Bolter, Digital Weapons, Melta Bombs)
ELITES
Dreadnought (Multi-melta, DCCW with Storm Bolter)
8x Terminators (1x Chainfist, Heavy Flamer, Land Raider Crusader with Brother Sergeant Chronus, Multi-melta, Storm Bolter)
FAST ATTACK
10x Assault Marines (Sergeant with Melta Bombs)
HEAVY SUPPORT
Thunderfire Cannon
Aurora Marines chapter colours.
The scenario for this game was Pitched Battle and Seize Ground with 5 objectives – one placed in the middle of the board, and then 1 in each table quarter. However, after deployment, each player would remove 1 objective... exciting!
We rolled for the first turn which Jonathan won. He decided to go first and I declined to seize the initiative. After our forces were placed, I removed the objectives his Scouts were camping on (basically neutralizing them for good) while Jonathan removed the objective on my left flank.
Turn 1 – Space Marines Jonathan moved his Rhino and Land Raider ahead, but remained otherwise stationary. In the Shooting Phase, most of his units were either out of range/LOS or missed their shots... except for the Land Raider Crusader. Jonathan had poured a ton of points into that thing, so it was pretty much certain to kill something. He fired the Assault Cannon, Storm Bolter and Hurricane Bolters at the Long Fangs hiding in the fortress, killing 2 of the Missile Launchers. In what had to be the best way to start a tournament EVER, I rolled 11 for their morale check and they out of the ruins. Luckily they'd be able to regroup next turn, but I just lost that unit's ability to fire their weapons for at least 1 turn...
Turn 1 – Space Wolves I moved my entire army ahead, gunning for the objectives. The Rune Priest and 5 Grey Hunters would go for the left objective, the Wolf Priest would capture the middle objective and I'd camp a Rhino on the right one while the last Grey Hunter squad (which I'll call Grey Hunter Unit Alpha) attacked the enemy deployment zone.
In the Shooting Phase, my numerous heavy weapons really went to work. I blew up the Thunderfire Cannon and killed its Techmarine attendant, destroyed the Dreadnought (which was the only real threat to me on the table as far as I was concerned) and stunned the Rhino. I also popped smoke on my 2 Rhinos.
Turn 2 – Space Marines With most of his army now immobile, Jonathan's only unit that could move up was his Land Raider. He gunned it forward 12” and disembarked right in front of the Rune Priest's Rhino. Uh oh. The stunned Rhino also disembarked and the Tactical Marines moved towards the Redeemer as the Chaplain joined them. It would be do-or-die for them, because if their meltagun couldn't destroy my Redeemer then its Flamestorm Cannons were going to toast them.
In the Shooting Phase, the Crusader's Multi-melta missed my Rune Priest's Rhino, so the Terminators prepared to charge it themselves. The Tac Squad's meltagun also managed to immobilize my Redeemer – not good! Finally, the Scouts fired their missile launcher at my other Rhino, and actually managed to wreck it. To make matters worse, the Grey Hunters inside got pinned down.
In the Assault Phase, the Terminators charged the Rune Priest's Rhino. Luckily, because the Rhino moved 12” in the previous turn, the Terminators were unable to damage it. The Tactical Marines also charged the Redeemer, since the Chaplain had Melta Bombs and the Sergeant had a Powerfist. I didn't think they'd do anything, but they actually managed to Shake it!
Turn 2 – Space Wolves The Rune Priest disembarked and the Rhino blasted off to go contest the left objective... except that it immobilized itself on the hill. The Grey Hunters' Razorback went to join it, but got itself immobilized on the hill as well! Brilliant.
Well then... off to the Shooting Phase. My Redeemer fired its Flamestorm Cannons at the Tac Marines and the Long Fangs joined in with Krak Missiles. When the dust settled, the Chaplain and 3 Tac Marines were still standing. The Rune Priest and his squad also managed to kill a couple of Terminators. The Rune Priest cast Murderous Hurricane on them, but Perils'ed on himself, suffering a wound. They then Assaulted the Terminators, cutting them down to only 3 survivors (with a lot of help from their Wolf Standard). The Terminators swung back, killing 5 Grey Hunters in return.
Turn 3 – Space Marines The Chaplain's squad moved to get away from the Redeemer's Flamestorm Cannons, heading towards the right objective. They then fired their meltagun at the Long Fang Razorback and actually managed to blow it up. Elsewhere, the Scouts fired on my pinned Grey Hunters, but failed to kill any of them. In a bout of luck, they managed to pass their pinning test this time (the first Ld test I had passed all game).
In the Assault Phase, the Terminator Sergeant managed to kill 1 of my Grey Hunters, but the Terminators were promptly slaughtered by the Rune Priest and his squad (I believe the Rune Priest killed 2 of them personally). They consolidated towards the Crusader to hit it with their meltagun.
Turn 3 – Space Wolves The immobilized Razorback disembarked its Grey Hunter occupants, who moved to capture the left objective. Meanwhile, the other Razorback moved onto the hill, and succeeded at not immobilizing itself – good job, you deserve a cookie. Finally, the no longer pinned Grey Hunters headed towards the Scouts, wanting some revenge for their losses.
In the Shooting Phase, despite firing a meltagun and 2 Lascannons at it, my troops failed to do any damage to the Crusader whatsoever. Worse, 5 Long Fangs with Krak Missiles failed to kill even 1 Tac Marine. However, the Redeemer flamed 1 to death, but it was small compensation. The Assault Phase continued my bad luck, as the Rune Priest's squad's Wolf Guard failed to scratch the Crusader with his Powerfist.
Turn 4 – Space Marines Time was beginning to run out – we only had about 15 minutes left to finish the game! I began getting into an endgame mindset, since this was likely going to be my last turn. Jonathan's Assault Squad finally showed up, and he deep struck them onto the left objective. The Crusader then backed up to open fire on the Rune Priest and his squad. Finally, the Chaplain and his squad moved to destroy the Grey Hunter Razorback camped on my right objective.
In the Shooting Phase, the Tac Squad managed to blow off my Razorback's TLLC, but it stood resolute. They then assaulted it and only managed to Stun it! Unfortunately, my Rune Priest didn't fare so well, as he and his entire squad were gunned down by the Crusader's furious gunfire.
Turn 4 – Space Wolves I only had 5 minutes to do my moves, so I made them really quick and didn't even get time to finish my entire turn here. My Wolf Priest and his squad disembarked from the Land Raider, charging up into the middle objective and capturing it. The 5-man Grey Hunters tried to capture the left objective, but failed to reach it. The other Grey Hunter squad moved to assault the Scouts, but I ran out of time before I could do it (it was mostly for bragging rights in any case). Finally, the Long Fangs opened fire on the Chaplain and squad, obliterating them with ease and securing the right objective for me.
When time was up, we tallied up the objectives. I had 2 and Jonathan had 0 (apparently he did not realize that Assault Marines couldn't capture objectives... umm....). Because of this, I scored a Major Victory and got 15 points for my victory, putting me at the top of the leaderboard (tied with, like a dozen people though) after Round 1! Excellent!
Afterthoughts While I had some horrendous luck (I passed 1 Ld check that whole game...), I still managed to pull an easy victory out of this one. To be fair though, I was running a much better optimized list than Jonathan, so this was always going to be an uphill battle. Then again, he held me off better than I expected, although when he charged my Redeemer with his Tactical Marines he was pretty much dead.
I felt pretty bad about crushing Jonathan so utterly though. Contrary to popular belief (ahem), I do not enjoy destroying my opponents – I prefer a close game where everyone has fun throughout. However, since this was a competitive tournament that I wanted to win, I was going to have to swallow back the guilt and try to do it again if I wanted a shot at top spot...

You should have only fired the one flame storm canon if it was shaken using POTMS.... Unless it was just written incorrectly.
Yea it really is gross how many more elite, better equipped, special rues backed models you had over his underwhelming units.
Just looking at the deployment vassal pic I LOL'd pretty hard. Had he not had fortune on his side, this game wouldn't have been easy for you.... it would have been a total joke! I play wolves too so I'm not hating on you, just how bad codex creep is...

Cool looking armies!
Yeah, I could only fire the one cannon, but it alone scorched most of them. The Long Fangs helped a bit too.
And yes, his list was pretty poor for a competitive environment. I still won pretty easily, but Space Marines can certainly come out with better lists than that one.

I feel for your opponent a little bit, that looks like the kind of list that I would have put together before I found Dakka. Fantastic models, though, and congrats on the win!

Thanks! To be fair, that list is perfectly fine in non-competitive play - I take pretty silly lists from time to time because I enjoy it. However, the first thing I said when I decided to enter this tournament was that I wasn't going to run my Wolf Lord + Wolf Guard in Terminator Armour. As much as I love them, they're just not optimized, and if I wanted to increase my odds I'd have to come up with a list that could go toe-to-toe with whatever got thrown at me. Jonathan's list was probably cobbled from stuff he had painted to a high standard, but it wasn't very coherently put together imho.

Well that also has to do with the fact that6 there are a lot of tournaments now that don't count soft scores as highly as they once did... Good for gamers, but bad for hobbyists. Oh well...
True. There are units in the SM codex that aren't worth their weight in points, but I know that I'll take them here and there because I like them too much not to. And kudos to Jonathan for participating in a tourney, I doubt that I'd ever have the guts to shell out the entry fee for one.

To be fair, I'd prefer if they kept the painting competitions and generalship separate... if only because I'm a mediocre painter at best. As for sportsmanship, I think someone(s) tanked my score in one or two of my games, because I had one of the lowest scores in the whole tournament - and honestly, I'm not THAT bad of a guy!

Yup, sometimes the so-called "crappy" units are the funnest! I love running lots of Carnifexes myself, for example.

Game #2 – Space Wolves vs Space Marines (Salamanders) We broke for lunch briefly, at which point I discovered that our next game would be Kill Points unfortunately. Kill Point games are by far my weakest game type, I tend to bleed them in part because I prefer an aggressive play style. Even worse, my opponent was a friend of Crablezworth's named Chris who was running a nasty Vulkan TH/SS Terminator army. This was definitely a more competitive list than my last match up and would be sure to give me a considerable challenge. I would have to cripple his deathstar if I wanted to have a chance of defeating him. His list was very close to the following:
HQ Vulkan He'stan
ELITES
7x Sternguard Veterans (Combi-meltas, Drop Pod with Locator Beacon)
10x Terminator Assault Squad (TH/SS)
5x Terminator Squad (1x Chainfist, Heavy Flamer)
TROOPS
10x Tactical Marines (Flamer, Lascannon, Sergeant with Power Sword, Rhino)
10x Tactical Marines (Flamer, Lascannon, Sergeant with Power Sword, Rhino)
FAST ATTACK
Land Speeder (Multi-melta)
Land Speeder (Multi-melta)
HEAVY SUPPORT
Vindicator
Whirlwind
The scenario for this game was Pitched Battle and Annihilation with a twist – each player picks one enemy unit before deployment. The chosen unit is worth 3 kill points instead of 1! I picked Chris' Drop Pod and he picked my Rune Priest's Rhino. We rolled for the first turn which I won. However, I let Chris go first.
Turn 1 – Salamanders As per my plan, Chris' Drop Pod had to come in on Turn 1. However, I didn't count on him dropping it right in front of my Rune Priest's Rhino... That said, I had deployed in such a way that it would maximize his chances of falling off the board if he tried to deep strike onto me. I crossed my fingers – if he did that, I'd get 5 KPs for free, and then I could coast through the rest of the game.
Unfortunately, the Drop Pod was right on target, and suddenly Vulkan He'stan and 7 Sternguard with Combi-meltas spilled out onto my lap. CRAP.
Meanwhile, I hardly had time to worry about the Terminators and Vindicator which were bearing down on my troops. Thankfully, the Vindicator was 1” short of firing on my Long Fangs, so I'd have a turn to neutralize it still. However, the Tactical Marines in the left Rhino fired their Lascannon at one of my empty Razorbacks, wrecking it off the bat. The Sternguard then opened fire, but despite packing enough melta to destroy a Warhound Titan, they only managed to blow off the Rhino's Storm Bolter, Stun and Immobilize it! Holy crap!!!
Turn 1 – Space Wolves Trying to save my Rhino (and potentially win the game right now), I disembarked my Rune Priest's squad and the 5-man squad of Grey Hunters and went after Vulkan and his retinue. Meanwhile, my other forces moved ahead, splitting into two squads. I was hoping to break off Chris' TH/SS Termies from the rest of his forces and, with a bit of luck, I'd whittle them down from shooting before my Wolf Priest moved in to finish the job.
In the Shooting Phase, my Long Fangs fired on the Vindicator, Stunning it. The combined fire of the Rune Priest, his squad and the 5-man Grey Hunters actually managed to annihilate most of the Sternguard, but Vulkan was still standing (albeit, wounded). Meanwhile, my left-most Razorback blew up Chris' left Rhino and the Long Fangs pummelled 3 of the survivors with Krak Missiles. The Rune Priest's Rhino also popped smoke for some extra protection.
In the Assault Phase, my Rune Priest's squad managed to kill Vulkan and the last of the Sternguard, while the Grey Hunters suffered 4 casualties.
Turn 2 – Salamanders Chris rolled for his reserves this turn, and dropped in 2 Land Speeders... armed with multi-meltas... right on top of my vulnerable Rhino, led by the Drop Pod's locator beacon. Oh crap. Meanwhile, his TH/SS Termies moved to my right flank, while the 5-man Terminator Squad split off to attack my opposite flank. He also moved his last Rhino forward to help out the TH/SS Termies, popping smoke on it.
In the Shooting Phase, the Rhino was predictably toast. Meanwhile, the other Land Speeder turned the Razorback sitting next to it into a smouldering wreck. Argh, not good!
Turn 2 – Space Wolves Chris' TH/SS Terminators were closing in and I needed to kill them or they could wreck my entire right flank. I did some deliberating and decided to take a risk – I disembarked the Wolf Priest and his squad to attack the Terminators. With 3 Meltas in the squad and bolt pistols on the rest, the Land Raider backing them up and around 40 attacks in close combat with Preferred Enemy and the Wolf Standard, I figured there was a good chance I could, at the very least, cripple the squad. It would be a big risk though. Elsewhere, my Rune Priest's squad moved to attack the Drop Pod while the 5-man Grey Hunters charged one of the Land Speeders.
In the Shooting Phase, my right Long Fang squad decided to split fire – 3 shots at the Vindicator and 2 at the nearest Land Speeder. Luckily, they managed to down both vehicles with their shots! The Rune Priest and his squad were less fortunate, failing to hurt the Drop Pod. The Land Raider and Wolf Priest were just plain abysmal. Only a single Terminator was brought down by their shooting. Finally, the left Long Fangs fired at the approaching Terminator Squad and managed to kill 1 with a Krak Missile.
In the Assault Phase, my Rune Priest and his squad (one of whom had a Powerfist) failed to scratch the Drop Pod, as did the 5-man Grey Hunters on the Land Speeder. The Wolf Priest and his squad didn't do much better... after their withering amount of attacks and endless re-rolls they killed a grand total of... 3 Assault Termies. Wow. The Terminators swung back, killing 7 of the Space Wolves after No Retreat saves.
Well that was a pretty disastrous turn if I do say so myself.
Turn 3 – Salamanders I don't remember this turn very well (the tournament was over a week and a half ago, so I'm entirely relying on memory, my photos and logic to reconstruct the events) and while the report may not be 100% accurate, it's pretty close. And in any case, I'll try to keep it entertaining and coherent anyway!
The Salamanders didn't do much moving this turn. The Land Speeder sped away to escape the Grey Hunters, and then realized that there was a Land Raider right in front of it. In the Shooting Phase, it blew it up in 1 shot. The disembarked Tactical Squad also managed to immobilize one of my Razorbacks, and someone also blew off its Lascannon (again, I don't remember who).
In the Assault Phase, the Assault Termies continued to wreck me, not suffering a single wound. They then used their hammers to kill all but 1 of my Marines, who (infuriatingly) passed his Morale check and stayed locked in combat! Nooooo! Why can't you fail when I want you to?!
Turn 3 – Space Wolves By this point, I knew I was far behind, so my best point was to force Kill Points as much as I could. My last Rhino disembarked and sent its occupants after the Terminator Squad, then it drove away to find some cover.
In the Shooting Phase, my right Long Fangs shot down the Land Speeder and blew up the other Salamanders Rhino surprisingly (actually wasn't expecting that). In the Assault Phase, my last Grey Hunter was easily killed by the TH/SS Termies, and they consolidated to attack my Rune Priest's squad, which finally managed to destroy the Drop Pod. Meanwhile, the other Grey Hunters squad charged the other Terminator Squad, but whiffed. In return, all but 3 of them died...
Turn 4 – Salamanders Chris moved his TH/SS Terminators and Tactical Marines to crush my Rune Priest and the 5-man Grey Hunter squad. In the Shooting Phase, the left Tac Squad's Lascannon finished off the immobilized Razorback and the Whirlwind, which had been firing at the Long Fangs and missing/failing to wound all game, actually managed to kill 3 Long Fangs with a hit! Luckily, they stood their ground. In the Assault Phase, the TH/SS Termies assaulted the Rune Priest's squad and killed almost everyone without suffering a single casualty... AGAIN.
Turn 4 – Space Wolves The 5-man Grey Hunters squad was now screwed – they couldn't escape the TH/SS Termies next turn – so they decided to sell their lives dearly. I sent them to assault the Tac Squad. Meanwhile, my last Razorback disembarked its Grey Hunter occupants to defend the Long Fangs from the incoming Terminators. Finally, the right Long Fangs didn't want to give up another Kill Point uselessly, so I ran them the heck out of there.
In the Shooting Phase, my Razorback fired at the Whirlwind and actually managed to blow it up, despite it getting a 4+ cover save from the hill in front of it. The Long Fangs then directed their fire at the Terminators, killing 2 of them! Geez that's more kills in 1 Shooting Phase than I've gotten this whole game...
Meanwhile, the 5-man Grey Hunter squad charged the Tactical Marines. After their guns fell silent and they charged into combat, they had reaped quite a tally – they killed 6 Tactical Marines, in exchange for 1 Grey Hunter! This was even more impressive when you realize that I didn't give them any special equipment whatsoever, and the Tactical Marine Sergeant had a Power Weapon. Holy crap!
Turn 5 – Salamanders Both forces were running short on warriors who were... well, alive and mobile. The TH/SS Termies moved to finish off my poor Grey Hunters, while the other Terminator Squad moved to multi-assault my Grey Hunters and Long Fangs.
There wasn't any shooting of note, so I'll go straight to the Assault Phase. The TH/SS Terminators killed my Grey Hunters, predictably, but they did nearly make back their kill point which was pretty impressive. Meanwhile, the Terminator Squad charged my Long Fangs and Grey Hunters – however, I managed to kill the Sergeant, while all but 1 Grey Hunter died and the Long Fangs were pushed out of the assault.
Turn 5 – Space Wolves This might be the last turn, so I needed to get as many Kill Points as possible to make this even close. I fired the Long Fangs at the Tactical Marines camped at the backfield, and managed to kill enough to force a Morale check – my plan all along. Unfortunately, they passed. In the Assault Phase, the last Terminator and Grey Hunter played rock paper scissors, as neither managed to hurt the other.
We rolled to see if there would be another turn and...
Spoiler:
There wasn't! Time to tally up the total Kill Points and see how badly I lost...
We added up the Kill Points and, including the 3x bonus we got for our “marked” targets, the final score was 12 to... 11! Holy crap!!! I had no idea that the game had been that close! The game ended up being a minor loss for me, so I only got 3 points... And unless I got a major victory in my next 2 games, there was no way I was going to win this thing. One can always try though!
Afterthoughts My biggest issue here was no reserving my Rhino off the bat. I initially didn't do it because I wanted to keep my Rune Priest's squad protected from the Vindicator, but I should have definitely done it. That alone might have won the game for me. I also should have just lured away the TH/SS Termies and then sped away so they couldn't do anything to me. Furthermore, the dice just weren't on my side, and I gave up too many weak kill points. All-in-all it could have gone a lot better, and didn't make me like Kill Points games any more than I already do (read: I don't like Kill Point games at all).

Thanks! Nothing worse than a dry, boring report. As one of my Professors said about essay-writing "Why should I care about this?" I try to keep that in mind and make my stuff interesting. Not sure how often it works.
And the Dice Gods seem to hate me... hence why I've pledged my soul to the Dice Demons... and when I'm counting on a good roll I, er, hold the dice at crotch level, shake my hand back and forth and let 'er fly. Seems to work more than half the time

Thanks! Nothing worse than a dry, boring report. As one of my Professors said about essay-writing "Why should I care about this?" I try to keep that in mind and make my stuff interesting. Not sure how often it works.

Anyway, I would appreciate if you would refrain from posting stuff on my Battle Reports that is completely off-topic, nothing more than an unwarranted jab and a waste of time for the 15,000+ users on this site to scroll past.
Automatically Appended Next Post: That being said I look forward to seeing the other ones and how they played out.

Indeed, there were some really nice Necron armies at the tournament, I was fighting beside a very cool black and yellow one during the first game. You'll have to wait and see for now though. I'll just say that I didn't only fight Marines during the tournament.
