I've thought about it a little bit before my ideas would go something like...
you start the board with alot of hills and outcrops or rocks, tall cliffs with bridges connecting them maybe (you can make a modular bridge that can be removed) you make some strange ruins and stuff to cover the board, than what I think would be cool is you texture it with sand, paint it dark green. spray adhesive the whole thing and buy like that modeling moss from woodland scenics and just crush it down and flatten around the trees to make roots jutting out and stuff, for paths you could always use water effects and some sort of gap filler like wall spackle and make mud and tank tread marks....plastic aquarium plants, just make sure you repaint them so they don't look tacky...and yeah the pet shop and hardware store are your friends with this one.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
These are some cool examples but I think if you give the table even more height it might create an amazing over all look and feel to it, so maybe have a portion of the table elevated 1-2 feet above the base line or make those modular

I hope I've helped

home depot:
you need a few sheets of this

you can get a gallon of elmers or pvc glue at staples or walmart or whatver add a bit of water to that or just paint it onto ur foam however.
cover the whole thing in sand you can get from a playground or a hardware store. once thats dry you just prime the whole thing in either black or dark green house paint (for the purposes of having a jungle) buy some cheap acrylic paint from a hobby/craft store in a slightly lighter green and dry brush that on and work your way up the shades of green until you're happy with it.

Pet stores are great for that kind of thing!

you want to look into aquarium plants and stuff like that, you could also buy the ugly games workshop jungle tree plastic kits or the other route would be to either make your own out of wire and such. just remember to hand paint the aquarium plants because they will look really tacky next to your army if you don't. always layer different shades of green, look at lots of jungle boards online (google images) and real photos and try to show that in your terrain.

I made enough 5" diameter tree bases to fully cover half a table for less than $50 a few years back. I took one of the clear tops from a CD spindle I had left over, grabbed a bag of plaster, and went to places like Joanne Fabrics and bought a variety of plastic plants. I waited until they had one of their bigger sales so I saved a bundle.

You prep by cutting your plants into the proper sizes, discarding the bits that won't work, acquiring some small rocks (easy if you have a gravel driveway), and any other odds and ends you come across that would work. In y case that was a few GW plastic trees from the 3rd edition starter and battalion sets and the last of a Woodland Scenics Pourable Water I needed for something else.

Next you spray your spindle with a cooking spray like Pam, then you mix your plaster with some water and pour in the spindle top, I liked 1/2" or so thickness. While it is wet insert your material and let dry. At this point you paint and flock. Below is a picture of one of the ones I need to finish.

P⑨P QUIZ

A bus left the Scarlet Devil Mansion; three people boarded at the start.
At Hakugyokurou, one left and half a person boarded.
At Yakumo-san's house, two people left; so how many passengers in total?
The answer is zero people because there are no buses in Gensokyo!

I dunno if it's just me, but I have a thing against using fake plants from pet stores. Sure, one or two are nice (when properly cut down) but they just seem so... plastic-y? They look too unrealistic in my point of view. But then again, I live in a place with a nearby tropical forest, so maybe I'm just particular to this kind of stuff. The first example looks top notch in my book: notice the lack of pet store plants and the abundance of tall grass and different trees. That's how a jungle should look like, or a Southeast Asian one at least.

My first advice is to determine what type of jungle do you want: there are lots of different types and sticking with one or the other would make your work more cohesive and realistic even if you use different plants. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/tropical-2.php

My second advice is to look up terraformer's P&M blog concerning their jungle terrain: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/391108.page

Here's their finished product:

Aquarium plants and scenery are the best!
so is high density polystyrene foam.

Cool terrain and I agree it is top notch in my book. I'll see what I can do about not putting the "fakeness" in my jungle.

I agree heartserenade, the terrain does fall far short of quality, but my goal was a cheap and quick means to cover a 4'x6' table for jungle fight games. In that regard it is an outstanding success as I cast all of that in a week using several spindle tops.

Nothing wrong with that. I'm just really OC when it comes to terrain.
