Hi all,

Just a little side project while working on a Space Ranger army (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/353140.page).

A friend of mine, Evan, started a Grey Knight army last year. Recently he saw a couple of auctions for GK termies and a Stormraven. He saw the silly low current bid price and decided to place a couple of his own silly low priced bids. Of course he won both
What is a person supposed to do with Draigo, Stormraven, and about 45 termies? He choose to sell 20 termies to me

I've been wanting to build a Draigo-Paladin list since the codex was released. Not so much that I wanted to spend about $250 on it, but for $60 for the termies and another $20 for Draigo I couldn't say no.

Here are pics of the lot

Some of them are very RED. Currently they are sitting in a bath of Simple green.

I have enough parts too make:
Librarian
Banner
Psycannon (x6)
Apothacray
and a mix of other weapons.

While the painted figs are soaking I've started on the bases

Cork Rocks

Heads on bases

Please feel free to share any ideas or comments

Thanks and take care

Having a head on every single base seems a little over the top, don't you think? Interested in how your Red Knights will look.

Clearly, you've never witnessed the carnage caused by GK Paladins. There should be at least two more heads per base.

I imagine these GKs to be on either a demonworld or a chaos controlled world / battle zone and the heads are from previous wars. They have been there for many, many years and have become part of the landscape.

To assist in creating an old worn look I used Tenax to "melt" the heads a bit. Using a natural hair brush I applied liberal amounts of Tenax to each head and brushed and brushed until most edges were worn away.

Another great albinoork blog! I am very much of the opinion that carnage on gk bases should be massive. I have an entire box of blood letters on one pagk squad's bases and a box of daemonettes for another

Thanks. Some people like to put all their work in one blog, I prefer to separate the different projects. I'll keep that in mind about the bits.

Models are in day four of simple green bath. Hopefully it works

Meanwhile, I finished the bases and assembling Librarian Tyning.

Just a bit about this army's theme. I fully expect to get my chops busted for using, what some call, a "net" list (Draigo, Libby, two units of ten Paladins). Therefore, I am embracing the full cheesiness / beardiness of this army. I will probably prove that any list can lose
I do plan on making this look a bit different than most Grey Knights armies

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Moving right along

Took the parts out of the Simple Green bath. I used a fairly stiff plastic bristled brush to clean the models. Overall, I was hoping for better results. Too much paint is remaining in the recesses. Looks like I will be picking up some Super Clean

I decided to use the shoulder pad (personal) heradlry as back banners. While handling the models I broke a few back banner poles. Also, it doesn't seem to make much sense to cover the details of the shoulder pads with heradlry. I cut pieces of 1/16" rod to 1/2" lengths, glued them to the banners, added some green stuff around the rod to add some heft and strength.
I plan to use banners with swords or skulls for one squad and plain or ornate banners for the other squad.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Sleep is for the weak

Bother Bergon is ready for some primer! He's equipped with a psycannon and banner.
I went with a different banner. The one with the termies is okay, but I don't want to be stuck with it's imagery
I may venture into the world freehand.

I used a piece of steel rod, banner from SM kit (?), book and giant "I" from GK termies. Somehow I managed to drill out the hand almost perfect. I pinned most of the pieces together.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

I put the colored models in a Super Clean bath for about four hours. This stuff is incredible! I didn't want to leave it in for much longer because I've never used it before. I have a couple other models I can test for longer periods of time to see if any damage occurs.

Three more models are ready for some primer. Not much to these guys.

I ordered a Draigo, but he hasn't arrived yet. Hopefully, this will be a one and done, but from what I've been reading about finecast the chances of the first one being acceptable are slim ... at best.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

No rest for the weary.

First tonight is Apothecary Bosworth. I made two different weapon options (halbred & warding stave). I used magnets in the wrist to swap between the options. I only had one warding stave so I had to make a new one. I used a skull from a skeleton sprue, an iron halo, and the shaft of a halberd. Gameplay-wise I will try the warding stave first. An Apothecary should be a liver not a killer

Next up is our deamonhammer wieldin', psycannon toten' Paladin Garrotxa. While removing the vile red paint from the demonhammer I managed to break this mighty weapon. A small pinning operation was required but other than that it is pretty much a basic GK Paladin.

Thanks and take care

HI all,

inmygravenimage wrote:Looking great, love the modifications; neat variant warding stave.

Thanks. Nothing like necessity to come up with a conversion!

The leader of the army is Lord Kaldor Asiago. He's the Supreme Grand Master of the Flaming Cheddar Knights. He has this really neat-o rule in which Paladins count as troop choices. To represent Asiago and all his awesomeness I'll use the Lord Kaldor Draigo model. In other words - Draigo will counts as Asiago

I ordered a Lord Kaldor Draigo last week and he arrived yesterday. This is my first foray into "Finecast". I'll admit a wee bit of trepidation about doing this, but if a person wants to field the Draigo than this is the only way to go. After reading many, many horror stories about lack of quality lets hope it GW sends a good one. Here we go!

Okay, not to bad. The banner is missing left most portion of the banner pole. We'll call it battle damage

Same as front.

Hmmm, normally I would be upset but for this army it is perfect (more on this as the blog progresses)

Alright, alright, alright. Looking good.

Woohoo. Made it without ..... oh man WTF! Stupid storm bolter.

Ugh. The left side is missing a section. It looks repairable enough. I could make a stink and wait another week for a new model or just fix the damn thing. Okay, greenstuff it is. This seems to be GWs tactic (very not cool).

Attempt at GS repair.

Finalized. Not much going on. My GS-fu is far from the strongest, but this will work.

Not much going on here.

This is the paper plate I use to collect debris and such. I managed to drop Draigo's head into the pile. It took about ten minutes to find.

That is all for tonight.

Thanks and take care

HI all,

Well it seems like people just can't get enough Grey Knights
Thank goodness there are only twenty-one of these guys because I'm getting tired of putting them together.

Next on the agenda is Malvern. He uses a master-crafted Daemonhammer. I went through a couple of variations on the hammer head. I started with using two old storm bolter heads, but that looked ... odd. Than I took the extra "I" icon and cut up the insides than filled with liquid green stuff. I added an icon to one side and a book cover to the other. I couldn't get the cover to look decent so I cut a small strip of plasti-card and stuck it on to give the hammer head a bit more depth. Nothing extreme, but hopefully enough to separate it from other daemonhammers.

Thanks and take care

The best ideas are stolen ideas

Its not that I hate assembling them. Its more that I get bored. I have difficulty finishing armies.

As a modeling project this one is about a six (out of ten) on my scale of interesting. The models are okay and the whole Inquisition theme is so-so, but nothing about this project gets the modeling juices really flowing. For comparison, the Space Rangers are an eight and Sons of Pus (Nurgle Marine army) are a ten. I am anxious to get painting these guys but i want to finish assembling all twenty-one first.

This army is more about painting and playing. I will be using many of the new GW paints. I want to take a twenty-one model army to a GT event just because it will be easy to move from table to table. Also, I am looking forward to seeing peoples reaction to it

HI all,

Took a couple days away, but now its time to get back to the grindstone.

I've finished the remainder of Paladin Squad Orange.

First, is Niolo with his Falchions.

Second, is token Red Shirt Wensleydale.

Nothing fancy with either.

Finally are three servo skulls. I made them from Tau gun drones and Guard Vox backpacks. I started using skulls, but decided they looked to goofy and went with a cleaner look.

I know Graven is following

HI all,

I put a spot of paint on test model Wensleydale. I am using new GW paints and so far I'm pleased. I decided to start with the "Horror" shades, however I did not try the drybrush shade.

I haven't decided if I will stick with Citadel or use the same paint scheme as Hamm (from my Space Rangers Army here:http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/353140.page). I put a photo of Hamm at the end.

Any thoughts?

Wait, wait - pink cheese knights? What are they, they festive knights of Stilton and cranberry?

Love job on the paintwork, really nice but I do think you run the risk of inevitable Knights of Musical Theatre gags. I don't think they should be more Hamm though, no, nice to have a contrast.

Also, hi. No, wait, you mentioned me... Shucks. I love your back poles btw, what thickness of rod are you using there?

1. Yep. I said I was going to fully embrace cheesiness of Grey Knight Paladins. Don't expect an apology from me for playing them. At least I will be putting some effort into painting them. They are called Flaming Cheddar Knights for a reason
2. I had to look up Stilton. It wasn't on my list of cheese names otherwise I may have used it. If I make any more I will be sure to name him Stilton.
3. That is kind of the point.
4. I agree. There can be only one Hamm.
5. Rods are 1/16" cut to 1/2" length. So far their lifespan is much greater than the back banners on the sprues.
6. Argh. I was afraid of that. thanks for the heads up.

I added a layer of white and magenta wash to the lettering. They needed to stand out a bit more.
Work on the sword has begun. The results so far are ... meh. I was thinking black with turquoise highlights. Any thoughts?

HI all.

I haven't given up, just had a couple of things to deal with.

The power button on my computer broke and the day after it came back from being repaired I went and smashed the screen with a ladder
The work schedule the past couple of weeks hasn't helped much either.

I have some other photos ready to go, but they are "stuck" on my ipad (I'm curently using my work laptop, don't tell)
My Apple-fu is very weak. To call me a novice is insulting to novices.

Using a red wash over orange has been a very effective technique for me. It seems to add a bit of richness to the color and keeps it from being ORANGE.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

It's been awhile since I worked on these guys. I've been busy updating my Farsight Hunter Cadre for the MechaniCon this weekend (pics found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/480933.page)

Now it's time to get this army ready for the Colonial and next year's MechaniCon

Not much new (for me) regarding paint techniques. I did try pigments on the bases. The pigments are different and fun to use and messy

On to the photos!

Hi all,

A small WIP update of the remainder of squad Orange.

Just a couple of notes:
1. The black highlights are waiting for a wash of badab black.
2. The gray basecoat to white highlights will be painted with vgc Falcon Turquoise.
3. The lettering is practice for the banner. I plan on using a micron pen to write "Flaming Cheddar" along the left and right side of the banner. I figure practicing on a flat surface the same size as the banner is a good place to make mistakes.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Another WIP update.

Getting closer to completing Squad Orange or Ornate & Plain (referring to their personal heraldry).
1. Finished the force weapons.
2. Black washed the black highlights.
3. Bases are ready for pigments and static grass.

Next up:
- Assemble models.
- Touch ups
- Write model's name on back of base.
- Finish Brotherhood Banner.
- Add a wee bit of static grass.

After this squad is done I'll be working on Lord Kaldor Asaigo and Librarian Tyning.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Getting closet to completing the first unit of Grey Knight Paladins.

I decided to add each model's name to his base. The lip of the base is CF - Charadon Granite (my favorite base coat color) and the lettering is Dheneb Stone.

There are twenty-one models in the army so naming each one isn't an issue.

I envisioned the Brotherhood banner with a wedge of cheddar in the center with purple flames surrounding it. I've done more traditional flames using reds, oranges, and yellows but this time I wanted to keep it mostly monochromatic purple. The cheddar wedge took a bit of work to make it look somewhat three dimensional. The flames took .... much longer

I started by painting the area CF - Hormagaunt Purple.

Next was adding darker shades of purple. CB - Naggoth and something else which I can't remember.

At this point things were not going as planned and I decided to base coat with white and add darker layers of purple.

Okay, things are feeling and looking better. I used CF - Hormagaunt Purple and mixed with various amounts white for the flames.

Next up are some small magenta highlights to help give a wee bit of depth. At this point I'm thinking it looks more like a flower than flame, but it still works for this project.

I've been practicing lettering on flat pieces of paper. It actually wasn't as tricky as I though it would be to write on the banner.

I painted the remainder of the banner with blue tinted grays up and layered up to white. Final steps were to line the gold strip border.

Next up:
Adding small clumps of static grass than onto Lord Kaldor Asiago and Librarian Tyning.

Thanks and take care

Odd choice of colours. Well executed through. I agree with Graven about the Servo-Skulls I'm afraid.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Mostly, on my phone.

The banner is completely amazing! I love it, utterly. Lmk of you need any bits for the general insanity of your fromagerie.

Thanks. Yeah, I wanted to do something other than gray Grey Knights. I also wanted to try the new line of GW paints (which I like a lot). The servo-skulls are a failed experiment. When three people think they are to Tau-like its because they are to Tauish I don't plan on using them.

Thank you!
I'm good on parts .... for now.
