Hello!
Thanks for stopping by.
My fair lady bought me a squad of Tactical Marines for Christmas; they were built in no time at all though in true Kitch style it's taken me all this time to get some colour on them. The reason for is 2 fold:
1) I couldn't decide what colour scheme I wanted
2) Whilst I had decided on the main colour being red, I'd be trying to get a metallic red. Then follows 3 and a bit months of on / off searching for suitable paints and / or additives to get the metallic colour I wanted. Mostly fail, but I digress.
I stumbled across the Sons of Orar whilst flicking through the "How to paint Space Marines" book and thought the scheme was beautiful. I did a little reading in to the chapter and found that aside from them being a chapter named after a pretty handy Ultrasmurf Captain who came to fame during the HH, very little is really known about them, and all history has been expunged from imperial records.
Say it with me now.... "oooooooOOOOOOOoooooo!"
So, Codex newly purchased, and having treated myself to a box of termis and the Librarian in Termi armour (an unbelievably flawless cast I feel I should add!) I've been flinging various colours at these things for a few hours. So far I've primed everything black, based my tactical squad in Khorne Red (which gives a really nice dried blood colour, not 100% sure if I want this shade of red or the more loyalist Mephiston, bright red, shade) and picked out the necessary parts in Astronomican Grey, ready to layer up to white.
I was making real progress with a squad for once, but then... I thought sod it, let's do one Terminator for Dakka and call it a night. Now I'm not a fast painter, so I'm calling it quits here for now before I fall asleep and jab my brush in to something painful, though I hope to have more for you later this week.
In game, I envision these guys being deep space boarding action specialists, and as such will focus on short to mid range weaponry. On the tabletop, in an open fight though, I like the thought of dropping a missile drop pod in the centre of the board, blasting a load of things to hell, then calling everyone else in around it in their own drop pods and taking the world by storm. and righteous fury followed by copping off with all of the grateful lady natives. And they shall know no virgins - one of the less well known liturgies of battle.
Any way, here's my first Son of Orar, still some work to do though I'm very happy with how he's coming along. This is a base of Mephiston red over a black undercoat, with a shade of the new carroburg crimson. The white is asto grey over the black u/c, followed by a quick layer of white scar, which I think needs a thinning a little (been painting straight from the pot as I'm lazy, and that's what I thought you could do with the new 145 range).
Ta da!

Absolutely, I've since found that its just the veterans with white helmets, tactocals etc have red to match their armour, but like you say its pretty striking so I definitely want to do the helmets in white as well!
Jewels and eye lenses will be done in blue, weapon trims in.black, blades in silver.
The awards (crux terminatus, iron skull etc) will be coloured as seen in the sm codex

Bingo baby, that's exactly what I think
So tonight's update isn't much, we've had friends over until quite late so all I've been able todo is base coat another Termi in mephiston red and ceramite white, then wash with carroburg crimson & drakenhof nightshade (for the white bits). Ceramite white's lovely, it went on over a black spray coat in no time at all, and lets not forget that I know sod all about painting so I don't exactly have the best hands for the job!
I've also attached pictures of my Tactical Squad. These are the guys that we base coated with Khorne Red, I still think it's a lovely colour but I'm going to be using mephiston I think. Iirc the khorne red's in a new tub so from what I've heard it should keep until I find a use for it! These guys aren't a legal build, I just went hell for leather when building them, thinking only of what I thought looks a bit dapper; what a shame, I need MOAR to ensure I can field these guys without proxying them
There's also a picture of a guardsman shoulder pad. Why? Because I've decided to enter in to the national hero painting competition, and wanted to try out the guilliman blue glaze over a chainmail base. As I found out, this stuff and gravity do not go well together, the glazes are DEFINITELY ones to use in multiple coats. What will I enter? The Terminator Librarian of course. I also have an additive that can be mixed with acrylic paints to give them metallic properties which I'm going to experiment with on some dummy models, though that'll have to wait for tomorrow now...
So, picture time! That's it for tonight, more updates tomorrow all being well

Hey kitch, first of all great writing on the blog, its quite rare to find good bits of text in p&m blogs imo. Second of all great choice of chapter, the sons of orar have both a cool scheme, a cool name and an ace symbol.
Third of all, great technique on the white. Not only quick but looks good too. It took me 6 layers of highlights to get the helmet just right on this guy!
I know nowwhich technique makes more sense.
Lastly a wee criticism, though the wash works great on the helmet and all it's recesses it does rather 'pool' on the shoulderpads. To me it doesnt quite look right. Maybe swab the flat areas with a cotton bud while it dries?

Absolutely, I completely agree 100%. How's that for a positive response to constructive feedback lol
It seems to pool on the termi pads as there's nothing for it to 'bounce off', ie, no lip at the edge of the pad. I'm hopeful that it'll do alright on the tactical marines, though we'll see. As I say, I'm working with amateur hands here so I may find that I'm wasting time completely and not bother with shading the shoulder pads at all. I can't say I've done much else to them to be honest, so I'm a little bashful when you say I have a good technique lol!
Glad you like the writing here too, I must admit that I get a bit of a buzz out of posting plog updates, probably from the anticipation of feedback, so I guess I find that writing something that's hopefully interesting and energetic might encourage a response from the world of the interwebz better than my painting skills might!
Just added a few more, thinner, layers of the guilliman blue to the guards shoulder pad too, and it's starting to look close to how I'd hoped. It could be that a blue base is in order, so I'll run this by another test subject tomorrow and see how we get on with that! Automatically Appended Next Post: Ps - nice colours on that marine! What did you do the armour in? Sepia? The helmet looks fantastic, as I'm sure you'd hoped it would after 6 layers?!

Oh by the way, lots of mentions of the new GW paints. They should pay you for advertising .
Srsly tho, are they worth checking out? I noticed there are loads more than there used to be.

I'm the wrong guy to ask, to be honest pal, I'd buy a can of stale air if you told me it's fresher than that crap in the countryside
I do get shiny syndrome a lot, and have bought.... way to many lately, much more than I really need.
One thing that I can say without a shadow of a doubt is that the yellow base, averland sunset, is freaking awesome; got a nice even coverage on a test model in one fell swoop. The whites seem to be pretty damn good though tonight has been my first try with them.
I'm having better luck with mephiston red than I did with the old one (I can't even remember it's name any more...! And I didn't even give it cab fare !)
The shades are beautiful, but like I said earlier, I could have just subciously convinced myself that I haven't wasted money on something that could have bought more models when I had a load of paints to begin with! I'm sure they are though, I'm sure of it!
On a side note, I've posted a tentative army list here if anyone would care to review it and offer any thoughts up?
Cheers again

I've not used many, I bought 17 of them today, I used Flash Gitz Yellow for my 'Nid eyes - fantastic, I tried using the old yellows on some test 'Nids a few weeks ago and I needed coat after coat for their carapace over Chaos Black, but this yellow is bright straight out the tub.
I've used most of the blues, too. They seem alright straight out the pot, you definitely have to water them down for a smoother coverage.
The washes I've used, mainly Seraphim Sepia (over a Skull White undercoat) and seriously, they work better than the old washes. They pool where you want them to, not on the flat pieces as Devlan Mud etc used to do, and they don't smell! haha
I've only been painting for a year, and this new range seems really good, you can get the same colours time after time instead of hoping you mix the right ratio of colours.

Alright folks - any chance of some C&C on this? It doesn't look quite as rough at the edges as it seems in the picture! For the moment I'd be most interested in your thoughts on my colour selection, though all feedback is appreciated; I'm hoping to get this guy to a decent enough level to be entered in to the National Hero Competition. You know; that competition where all you do is buy something, paint it, and maybe win a scrap of paper that isn't worth anywhere near as much as the model you bought, or the time taken to paint it? lol
Anywhere, back on topic...!
The base armour colour is Mordian blue, shaded with drakenhof and edge highlighted with altdorg guard blue. The red is mephiston + carroburg, the yellow averland + flash gits on the edges and a glaze of lamenters yellow (only because I don't have the shade. Yet lol).
Originally, the chest icon and knee pads were in white though it looked as though there were too many colours involved! I went for red to tie in with the chapter colours. But you already knew that, coz you're not thick
Talking over, picture time!

It may be just the pics, but your paint looks a little thick. I have no experience with the current GW paints, but thinning them slightly could lead to better results.
Otherwise, I think you have to rethink either the yellow cloth, or the gold keys. ATM they are fighting with eack oter, whick makes the whole thing look a tad messy.
Finally, you could try black lining individual armour plates, to make the model 'pop' more.
Hope that helps!

I actually really dig the librarian, he's a little too 'bling' for my tastes but the blue is really nice. The robes are nearly there just another highlight imo, though the edging does look good. The red is a little pink, is it just the photo? All in all i think it is your best work yet. Edit: The gold is really nice, looks real.

Fair enough man, and thanks for your honest answer. Give me your worst though - what would you change? Remember, I want to enter this in to a competition so I'd rather get both barrels now and stand the chance of winning than folk tell me it's great when it's not, and then I lose! Lol

Agreed, I need to water down, and be less of a tight bastard when it comes to applying colours. I think one of the problems is I keep going until there's nothing left on the brush and it just ends up with that gummy / powedery mess on the tip of the bristles.
I'm changing the robe colour to white, starting with a grey undercoat. Doing so will tie in better with the white trim on the reverse of the armour and all me to tie in the detail on the front with the rest of the armour, without having to introduce another colour. Less is more and all that.
I'm not familiar with black lining - not heard the term before. Is that were you (as the name suggests) line the recesses of armour plates. Isn't that the same as shading?

Thanks Perkustin, really appreciate that. I agree, he is my best work yet (and I truly hope that's not too egotistical of me, I just recognise how crappy some of my other stuff looks!) though there's still a lot of work to do. I'll be back on with this guy tonight and will take care of the reds. They don't look pink IRL though I think some highlights will help to negate that effect somewhat. Thanks again bud.
stubacca wrote:to the OP, how have you found the newer paints compared to the older ones?

Hey bud,
The new paints are cool. I never got the right opacity with the old range, yet the new ones are pretty good, they've been going on (in a lot of cases) straight from the pot with pleasing results.
Finished model is on the way, I promise. One thing that you'll learn about me is that I spend, probably, far too much time on one model. I've never been a perfectionist before but when it comes to this stuff I'm never happy with what I've done, so I always go back and do something different. However I have every hope that I can get the Librarian done in the next week (sooner if I can).
Check back when you see an update, hopefully it'll be me with something EPIC

Similar- black lining is the technique of applying fine lines of solid black where an armour plate ends to give a reference point to the eye. It complements armour shading and can really 'lift 'your models.
Whilst you can use a fine brush, a slightly easier technique is to use a fine tipped pen, such as the Pigma Micron.
Here is a pic of Knightly's marine for a reference point:
Hope that helps.

haha, that's what I'm like, spend far too long on one model. It's depressing me a little bit because I've got 11 tyranids in front of me that need finishing off.
Yeh, definitely water the paint down, I think the Abaddon Black paint is stupidly thick compared to Chaos Black. You want a consistency like milk, that seems to work for me. Better to do two thin coats than one thick, or so they say.
If you haven't used the glazes, they seem awesome. I used the blue one and it really ties any blending you do together =]

The things I can think of have already been mentioned. Do some black lining and do something about the yellow cloth. It doesn't go too well with the gold on the model. Again, looking forward to the result.

I am curious about something though...
How come your paint finish seems really glossy? Is that just because of the camera flash?
I've just been painting some Flesh Tearers and my Adaddon Black + Mephiston Red undercoats are quite matte, even with a glaze over the top

In the wise words of one Professor Farnsworth... "GOOD NEWS EVERYONE!" I got my missile launchers With thanks to Bitz Box and Forge World (even if the FW missile launchers are a pain in the ass to fit to the model, and don't meet the hand that's intended to support the launcher.... )
I had wanted to get back to the libby tonight, but couldn't pull myself away from these - figured if I at least gave in to the urge, the next chance I get to sit down and paint willbe relatively focused on the Librarian.
So I now have my entire 1000 point force purchased and in my kitchen waiting on assembly and painting, I'll get a group shot when I have everything built

Holy crap... I'm trying to muster up my usual thread-post energy, but my god am I failing... it's 4.21am, and I've just decided to call it a night on my entry for tomorrows (todays!) GW painting competition.
There's loads more that I'd like to do, but after 6 hours of hard painting, freehand attempting, re-doing, colour changing, mind changing, changing again and NO TEA BREAK i have to call it stops and hope that this is good enough to at least earn me a pat on the back tomorrow. Here's hoping, otherwise Wakefield's gonna see a grown man cry!
Ladies, gentlemen, and everyone inbetween, I give you.... Chief Librarian Vassos of The Sons of Orar's First Company!!
My thanks to all that have offered critique on his previous incarnations, your thoughts have been most welcome and helpful - black lining definitely brought more out of the model (and I'm definitely gettign one of those pens, doing it with a fine detail brush was a p.i.t.a!)

Not to sound picky, but you could've used a wash on the face. God knows what it's called in the new range, but I used the old one on my Astorath the Grim finecast, and then a few teeny highlights and it worked really well. I usually suck nuts at painting faces too, I always find helmets instead of flesh
I don't get how your colours are so bright, I've just done a few Flesh Tearers and even over a white undercoat (I'm doing regular troops over black, and elite units over white) they aren't as bright/thick looking as yours haha

Camouflage is the colour of fear... I have no need to hide from my foes... I have no fear of death. My colours I wear openly, they proclaim louder than any words, "I am proud to live - I am proud to die" : |

Well, I didn't win. There were 20 40k entries, IIRC all of them got 1 vote (I missed the voting, not that I'd have voted for myself though). The winner was a Space Wolf Wolf Lord on Thunder Wolf.
In the follow up game I won the roll off and opted to go last. Also on the table was (in turn order) a GK Terminator librarian, some kind of IG Captain (I think... didn't recognise the model... looked likesomething from LotR to be honest) Terminator Chaplain, Mephiston, Wolf Lord on Thunder Wolf, the Swarm Lord, a Chapter Master, DE Archon, myself and a late arrival - Captain Genericus, the awesome hero of averageness. Who actually did ridiculously well
I managed to take a wound off Mephiston, stop a couple of his psychic powers, before he winged over to me, charged, passed his test that allowed him to reroll... everything... and I failed enough of the 6x 5+ saves required to kill me. Gutted, I didn't even get to cast VoD!
Mephiston took 3rd place, the Swarm Lord took 2nd, and the Wolf Lord took 1st place (rerolls against MC's came in really handy here!). I tried to get what would have been an awesome shot of Mephiston atop a hill facingdown the Wolf Lord AND the Swarm Lord, but couldn't get my phone to switch over quick enough. All in all though, an awesome day.
Stubacca - if I had the stuff then yeah I would have done. I've tried to avoid painting flesh as much as possible in the past and as such didn't even have the right tones. I got the above result with a base of tallarn flesh, shaded with ogryn flesh, highlighted with a mix of tallarn flesh / commando khaki / skull white. Wouldk have done better with more washes, but like I said in my post earlier... IT WAS 4AM. Lol
As for my colours... no idea :S
I started with a black spray base coat. Then on goes the mordian blue. Then a wash of drakenhof nightshade. Edge highlighted with altdorf guard. Another wash of drakenhof. Glaze with guilliman blue a few times... I think that's it, there may have been a couple more shades / glazes, but that must be where all the magic comes from.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh yeah, I forgot - I don't dilute with water, I use the 'eavy metal medium they released. Not too much of it, just enough to break it down a bit.
Not sure if that could help you

Not a real update - I'm doing tax for now, hope to crack on with my shiny new land speeders that Mrs Kitch102 treated me to (YES!), more just a note to self:
7th (fast attack) company's motto: "Cita Mors Ruit"
That's latin for "death is a swift rider", which is itself a translation for "all kinds of awesome"
I've ordered a few different banners that one of the speeder pilots will hold in his left hand, over the chassis (Sevrin Loth's banner, bretonnian banner, empire knight banner), and am looking for one of the SM casualty models that I'll model on to their base - it'll look as though they've just sped over the fallen body of their company's standard bearer retrieving the flag before the enemy get it! Still, I'd rather not pay £15 for them at the moment and they're no cheaper on ebay :(
