This is my first attempt at painting rust and battle damage. I think I might have gotten a little carried away but this tank (one of three I own) can just be the most beat up one. I haven't painted the tracks or really any of the details yet. Just the damage and the motif. I am not to sure how to go about aging the motif either, suggestions?

Nice, I like that a lot. Any details on how you did it.

Yeah that weathering is beautiful! Did you use pigments?

Thanks! I got a lot of inspiration from the tanks on this site.

First I built up the base color, Adeptus grey (darkest one) and then highlights withCodex grey, and Astronomican grey drybrush highlights.
Then I used dilute black and liberally applied to the enitre tank and then another drybrush highlight with white.

Then I started out with a thinned down Mechite red and calthan brown and started painting rust in the crevases. Then I inked with some old school GW brown ink, you could use a dark thinned down brown. Then I mixed a little macharius soloar orange in there for the rusty highlights. It was easier than it looks as you really just apply on a semi random basis. I didnt use anything special paint wise and I believe you could get the same effect mixing your own colors using most ranges of acrylics. The key is multiple hues in the rust to make it feel like real organic decay.

Here is a picture of one of my tanks with just the base coats and highlights next the the rusty one for comparison.

The weathering looks great, and in general the model is very well done. The only critique that I would make is that the metals look a little homogeneous. I would try to break them up a little. A good example is the tow chain on the side. The buckles on the end matching the tank makes sense, but the chain itself would look better with some variance of color. This could easily be achieved with a quick drybrush of another color in a few choice places. All around solid work.

I know what you are saying about the homogenous color palate, that was why I added the dragons head. I was hoping to break up he monotony. Once I have finished he details I will repost it and you guys can tell me if it has enough color variety.
