Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to the 3rd game of our Tyranid vs. Imperial campaign. In the last battle, the Guard units managed to power up the containment fence, improving the defences at Complex Alpha, but at huge cost. Now, through the jungles, the Hive Mind is sending a new type of threat towards the Imperial outpost at Complex Alpha.

The first games can be found here:

Sergeant Reld of the Cadian 61st adjusted the focal length of his magnoculars and swore under his breath. The constant haze of the sulphur clouds made any kind of long range visual read indistinct at best, but today was worse than usual. The fizzing snap of the power field surrounding the containment fence arcing in the damp air carried across the beaten zone at the edge of Complex Alpha. Around him, hastily erected defences dotted the hab-complex, thrown together following the Inquisitor's warning of an imminent enemy attack. A detachment of armour was also enroute from the landing zone to further bolster the defences.

Reld looked across at the heavy weapons teams and dug in guardsmen. Any filthy Xenos that attacked them here would be caught up on the containment fence and then destroyed at leisure by the guns of the Cadians. A cold chill run through him as he caught sight of movement on the other side of the fence. He cursed himself for such mindless fear and keyed his vox bead.

"Movement at the fence" It seemed the Inquisitor was right. "Safeties off lads - wait until you have a clear target before firing. Anyone wasting the Emperor's ammunition today is on KPs for a week!"

Even as he spoke, the Sergeant could see more and more movement. The entire tree line at the edge of the fence seemed to be alive. "Wait for it lads......wait for it..."

Suddenly, with a burst of foliage, something leapt into the air. It was followed by a score of other forms and a screech of inhuman hunger. Bat-like wings spread wide as the Xenos took to the skies. In seconds the first of the aliens cleared the fence.

"Emperors bones!" spat Reld "They're flying over the fething fence! Fire, fire - give them everything you've got!" Reld raised his pistol and fired off a shot into the swirling mas of Tyranids flapping towards his men.

"And for feth's sake get on the vox - where’s that armour!"

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Like all the games in this campaign, the battle is fought using night fight rules (representing the ever present sulphur clouds). The Imperials must survive for 7 turns against the fury of the Tyranids. All Tyranid organisms can fly in this scenario.

Complex Alpha

A view from the Imperial lines

The command squad takes cover

Heavy Weapons await business, with a ground scanner looking for targets

Reld and his men deploy to counter the threat

Antipodean Rangers guard the all-important spotlight

The first swarm of winged monstrosities land inside the wire

Followed by larger Tyranid Warriors

They quickly close with the defenders

More swarms arrive

Give ‘em hell men!

The first Cadian position is quickly overrun, but the Rangers prove a more stubborn opponent

Die in the name of the Emperor!

Catastrophe! The Cadian command squad is ambushed by infiltrating Warriors (at this point we realised the GM really did hate us)

The Rangers destroy the first two Gargoyle swarms

You’ll have to do better than that Xenos scum!

Oh….yes, that might do it….

The Guard lines are in disarray as the Warriors run amok – and still no sign of the armour (damned reserve rolls…)

Tyranid swarms continue to pour over the containment fence

The Rangers find themselves toe to toe with a much greater threat than the gargoyles

The Warriors run amok through another squad before they are finally brought down. But they have distracted the Guard for long enough…

The Rangers go down fighting, their honour intact

The swarms close in for the kill

Finally, the armour arrives

Sentinels join the fight

But with the Xenos so close, are they too late?

The dense sulphur clouds impairs targeters and scopes – most of the heavy weapons can’t find a target in the dim light

The outer complex is totally overrun

The Sentinels manoeuvre for a better firing angle

It is a target-rich environment…

The last surviving command squad orders the men to fight to the last

The Hellhound moves up for some flamer action

Sergeant Reld’s squad battle the first gargoyles to reach their position

The Heavy Weapons position falls

The Sentinels wound the Tyrant

But the last surviving Shrike destroys one of the walkers before it is brought down

The Hellhound roasts the gargoyles and wounds the Tyrant again

The Sentinels pull back as the swarm approaches

Reld and his men remain locked in combat with the gargoyles

The command squad disappears under a tide of Xenos

The Hellhound’s brief sally is ended by the Tyrant, which then leeches a handful of guardsmen and knits its wounds

Reld avenges the command squad

The sole survivor of the scanning team makes a break for the treeline, but is brought down by fleshborers

The second wing of Shrikes destroys the Sentinels

Spitting curses at the Xenos with his final breath and with his sword in his hand, Sergeant Reld of the Cadian 61st falls…..and Imperial resistance at Complex Alpha is at an end.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

From the launch bay of the Strike Cruiser “Hammer of Foes” Captain Gordus of the Sons of Gord listened to the final transmissions from Complex Alpha as the defenders were overrun. The Inquisitor had not fully appreciated the threat that the Tyranids posed – their ability to adapt to meet any foe was well known. He had left the Cadian garrison wholly unprepared for what they faced

Gordus was vexed. For a member of the Ordo Xenos, Iniquitos seemed strangely illprepared to deal with the contamination of Remuera Majoris IV. Perhaps it was incompetence, or perhaps something else. The Inquisitors reasons for this mission were becoming more obscure with every passing hour.

The Captain keyed his vox “Squads Secundus and Fortus prepare for drop pod insertion. We will clear the facility of the Xenos and return Complex Alpha to the Imperium. Tactical command, instruct the Cadians to conduct a similar operation to the west. We will strike east and crush the Xenos in the middle”

A new voice chimed in his ear as a transmission was received on the bridge. “Captain, as message from Inquisitor Iniquitos. He requests your presence for a briefing on the situation on the ground”

Gordus turned to the launch bay doors, their shimmering power fields repelling the cold void. The yawning doors framed the dull green shape of Remuera Majoris IV far below.

“Tell the Inquisitor to meet me planetside. Its time he provided some answers for this mission and his willingness to sacrifice good soldiers needlessly. Coordinates to follow.”

Gordus cut the link and hefted his storm bolter in one hand. One way or another, he would be getting answers from the Inquisitor.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Another close and challenging game. The poor old Guard lasted until the beginning of turn 7, but a combination of terrible reserve rolls for the armour and poor spotting rolls saw the nids chomping the whole garrison.

A really fun scenario – these different types of games are great to play and really give you an opportunity to do something a little different form normal missions.

Next game, Kill teams advance through the steaming jungles in an effort to eradicate the Tyranids now infesting the complex. Jungle warfare at its best!

Damn Xenos! Emperor preserve us. great campaign love following it and I also love the detail and the models.

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous.

I wish I could get my mates to do a campaign like this. Slackers.

But to at all rival this we'd need terrain and need to finish painting our armies...but still!
