Subject: First attempt at a table

This is my first attempt at a gaming table. I had some scrap pieces of 1”x5” pine I got from an old wooden container, a scrap piece of ¾” plywood and some free time. I don’t own a table saw so ripping down the pine was a PITA but I managed to get half way decent results. The dice lip is 2 ¾” so as to not be to obtrusive to the game but to prevent most throws from going of the table. I primed everything with a black latex paint and tomorrow will finally get to use a Citadel basing kit I had lying around. I put a permanent ledge in one corner (don’t know why) but figure I can write scenarios based on dice rolls so not every game will be the same, the other permanent piece is going to be a pond which is actually carved into the plywood (originally had some damage in that area) so part of the water could be considered “difficult” while the deep end could possibly be a trap or something.
I had some 1/8” foam so the bottom of the table has that glue on so should the table work it’s way to the dinning room it won’t scratch the table and piss off the Mrs.
Tomorrow I will flock, add some tall grass around the water and start painting. Need some water effect stuff and hopefully have a table by next weekend.
I hope to add a clear urethane to the outer trim as well…..
So what do you guys think?

What are the total table dimensions?
It looks really promising so far though.

This one is a Warmachine table. Being my first attempt and limited wood working tools I figured I’d start small. The plan I have is finish part of the basement and have two Warmachine and two Warhammer tables.
I have one Citadel battle board but wanted to do this one first and get some gaming time in with my Cygnar army.

After the “Mother’s day” stuff got done I went back to working on my table. I finished up the primer and then went over that with the Citadel brown that comes in the scenery painting pack I got when I bought my GW Gameboard. After that had set up I used PVA glue thinned with water and added some GW scorched earth to the glue mix then sprinkled the scorched grass, the only thing I didn’t like was the scorched grass that comes with the GW kit was lumpy (see pic) and although I figured out how to remove most of the lumps time was of the essence so after the grass dries I’ll remove what didn’t stay glued and then fill in with some lighter grass I bought from Scenic express.
The pond will be next, just have to get some water effects for that.

Hope to start building one more 4 x 4 table (different theme) and then move on to the “big boys”. The section of the basement we’re building will handle two 4’x6’ and two 4’x4’ easy. I have all the wood for framing out the game room, bought two 8’ baseboard heater units and have all the wiring done for lights. I also have our 60” flat screen we retired this past Christmas which will have a DVD player and Xbox for those nights you have to wait for a game……

Okay, so, this is totally a worthwhile road trip now.

It certainly is sounding that way at any rate.

Second gaming table is/was started…. We got it upstairs to have a go at a 1750 tonight just as it started to rain.
This table was intended to house a Realm of Battle Gameboard or to have the board removed to expose the layer of flock for a more flat board. Problem we ran into is the Realm of Battle board fit way to tight and we my just leave it inserted because I don’t really want to scratch up the dice edges.
I fell in love with the board(s) pictured in the 6th edition rule book and may make the board more “permanent” and look like either Fire & Blood (pg 345) or Last Stand or the Swamp Devils (pg353)
So I think this board will stay the way it is and I’ll go a little crazy with led’s and terrain.
Heck………… I can always build another table……

You could take a sander to the edges of the RoB board. Even an 1/16th of an inch off all the sides should take care of your problem, and won't do the RoB board any harm.

I've been thinking about that, wouldn't take much to get the boards to fit better.....
Just in the mood to get a game in tonight and then I'll fall back and see if I can get them to fit a little easier.

Has there been any more progress on the boards or has pesky work still been expecting you to do things?
