Rough Rider with Boomstick

I am looking for an alternative to the very expensive battlefoam. I have 3 land raiders, 100 minatures (tac marines to assault marines), 10 termies, 2 land speeders, a whirlwind, and a few other stuff. Does anyone know a good alternative to battlefoam? I have been using egg cartens for my minis (is that bad?). Any suggestions for a cheap battlefoam alternative (I have a suitcase, so I just need the foam)? Thanks in advance!

I use cotton fluff in a cardboard box.
Works amazing, and if you are really broke - you can tear apart an old blanket and wrap your models in the fluff for free.

KR multicases are excellent.
They have a basic cardboard case which holds 3 trays, that's enough for 1500 of IG for me. They're sturdy and will do all you need from a case for only about $40-50. They have a US operation now and have free shipping worldwide.
They have slightly more expensive (but still cheap) metal cases as well as a number of backpacks that contain the card cases.
I use KR as a storage system so have 5 card cars stacked at home and a metal case to go to tourneys with and a two case backpack for bigger games. I probably got all that for less that the standard BF bag (the occasional sale helps).
If that is not you taste Feldherr do a range of very well priced cases and bags that are as handsome as any other.

I've used them before and I was happy with the results. If the price on Battlefoam isn't an option I definitely recommend them.

I just got the KR backpack yesterday. It can hold my entire Valhallan infantry horde army plus armored support, and costs half as much as what a similar amount of storage would cost from Battlefoam.

I'm not a fan of the egg carton, I used them on my old metal GK and they just about all had arms broken off, I wound up getting sable foam and a cheap rolling carry on.

This. I got the backpack and it fits my entire 5000pts of Space Wolves (although about 1000-1500 of those points are tied up in HQs to be fair ). Only about $150 Canadian which is very reasonable considering that it had free shipping + 2 cases with custom cut foam.

Get a sturdy box large enough for your force with PLENTY of room to spare, then go to the fabric area of walmart. their should be large rolls of open-cell foam near the quilting supplies. one roll can protect a huge number of models.

Yes - bought one for my Blood Bowl teams. The half case is the same quality as the rest of the KR range so it's all good.

I'm with KR as well; Sabol isn't bad either and they're both cheaper than battlefoam. Battlefoam's quality is a bit better but when my toy soldiers only need to get from car to door of FLGS....
Butterfingers that I am, I've dropped my cardboard case on several occasions with nary a problem.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Another Wal-Mart alternative I did for a huge Ork army:
Big plastic tote, about $5. Which will hold about:
6 Plastic shoebox things with lids, $0.94 each. Then get a:
Foam Mattress Pad. A full size is about $11. You should already have scissors.
One of the shoeboxes will hold 3 tanks easy and should have room for some more. You can also get like 3 layers in each one for troops and each layer will hold roughly 30. More if you wanna cram them in.
Might not be as pretty, but it works VERY well.
edit: Then I remembered you have a suitcase, so all you'd need is the pad.

Awesome! Would you be so kind and do me huge favour? I would like to know the exact dimensions of the box just to know if it fits inside in my backpack, could you do that pretty please? Oh and how many inches of foam can it carry? Thanks in advance.

Because I am such an all-round good egg:
Dimensions - 10 1/2 inches x 8 x 4 1/2 ish
In metric - 27 cm x 20 x 12
In terms of foam, mine has 4 trays - they are the standard KR tray dimensions (apart from being half as wide obviously). Each tray has 25 standard spaces for a total of 100 figures per box.

I actually did this in the past, I had a pistol I sold and I kept the case, it stares 2 LS and a rhino with half room to spare.

I'll tout this page again as well - there's an article on the site which lists all the major manufacturers and reviews them..
http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Model_Case_Reviews_and_Recommendations
I'll also throw in my support for KR. Their basic cases are a storage system as well as a travel case, they're MUCH cheaper than the competition, and their full Multicase/Kaiser travel bag system provides better protection than Battlefoam.
