Hi all,
I'm probably going to move my WIP post/blog over to here at Dakka, you folks seem a lot more active than those at BoLS.
Well, I have started a labor of love. I am making a Traitor Guard army from my started but never finished Imperial Guard army. I've been salivating over some of the (hopefully true) rumors for the new Chaos codex that may or may not have rule for bad-guy-guard. I wish to live out my dream of running a Guard army with a Daemon Prince in one of the HQ slots.
I will start with posting some finished pictures. The goal:
As of now, here is the plan of models to make/paint:

Straken's Command Squad
Harker's Vets
Demolition Veterans for my Vendetta (3 meltaguns, demo-charge weilding guy will be an "icon bearer" and the fluff will be he's going to do some sort of daemonic blast)
Vendetta x 2
Psyker battle Squad (instead of 9 psykers and 1 overseer, there will be 1 Chaos Socerer and 9 slaves! When he fails a perils test, he has to sacrifice a slave to the dark overlords. Also, {obviously} since he gathers his power from the various life forces of his vicitims, he loses power as his slaves wither away)
A wicked Executioner fully loaded with Plasma
Manticore/Hydra (interchangeable turret)
Demolisher
My (doomed surely) close combat Vets (2 Flamer, HEavy Flamer, Powerfist Sarge, Grenaiders) in a flamer laden Chimera
Hellhound
2 Sentinels
2 more veteran squads with Chimeras (one with all plasma, another with all melta again)

As far as my color scheme, I want to do Khaki/Grey/Red and then use bright blue/bright green for plasma/energy/power weapons.

Another thing to note, I believe myself to be a skilled amatuer painter. I have painted commision before but since having 3 kids and a full time job, I have to limit the time I can spend on building and painting an army. I want this army to be above table top (which is surely is so far) but I will not be able to lovingly spend hours and hours on each model. For example, most accessories will be grey/mud washed/highlighted, no matter if its a radio or a gun. With my Chaos Marines I would have painted them differently. Not now, unless I do not want to finish this army within 9 years.

I will update more as I finish and some WIP pictures. Enjoy!

First is the Daemon Prince.
I painted him in a new style for me. I primed white (which I usually prime black or painters touch khaki camoflague flat), then built up his skin with blue washes (just blue paint and water) layered on over and over and over, occasionally highlighting with pure white. Bascially, whenever I got 10 minutes, I would crack open the blue wash, wash the dude, and let it dry while playing with the kids and waiting for my next 10-minutes free Everything else is basically painted with a brush/wash/highlight. I will eventually go back and power-weapon-treatment-up his sword.
Here is where I ask everyone to do a Dark Prayer so that I might someday have rules to use this guy in my Guard army.

Up next is my stand in for Colonel Straken. He is obviously not Straken-gone-bad, but a character that counts as him. Haven't named him but my daughter suggested "Killer Tom." I like the name and I think it will stick.

This guy was all brush base coat/wash (either mud or sepia) then highlight. For the sword, I went with red and layered on colors along the edges, building up to red/red orange/orange/orange bone/bone to get that cool effect.

His base is a resin base that in this picture I hadn't painted yet. It is painted and flocked now, but I don't have the picture of it.

Enjoy!

My standard Trooper. I haven't made it around to filing off all of the Aquilas yet. I plan on doing that in the future.
The heads are from Pig Iron miniatures. I really wanted to have my veterans only have these heads, then have my regular troopers to have normal cadian heads.
As I progress, I might go back and order more Pig Iron heads. I like the uniform look across the army.
I am very pleased with the basing feel that I obtained. It is very easy and comes off looking great.
I use white glue, sandbox sand, static grass in patches then the "reeds" that came from hobby lobby for train sets. Only 1 in 5 or 6 guys will have the reeds because it is kind of a hassle to get them to look good and I think it adds a level of AWESOME to see it here and there. Also, the rest of the troops I have painted since have only had standard grey guns instead of the red/grey stock like in this picture.
Enjoy!
Oh and some backstory for the lack of Chaos-ness all over the troops with crazy sigils and stuff: My troops are dedicated to their leader. The LEADER is dedicated to Chaos. They are bad guy Guard doing bad guy things. Each guy is not some deformed Chaos mutant waiting for dark gifts from higher powers. They are troops following leaders.

Up next is the Executioner plasma tank.
I have a soft spot for this beast. At 230pts, I usually find it to be a bargain. Since playing Guard, I have never NOT fielded this model.
As far as modeling and painting, my vehicles will all have some sort of Chaos-y-ness to them. When I field the army, typically there are not many guys on foot running around. Usually they are hiding inside of one of the Vendettas or Chimeras. For this one, I kept the main armor color khaki with a wash of sepia, then a drybrush of khaki. The grey is grey/mud wash/highlight and the plasma is white with a blue wash then a white highlight. The red was painted on to look as if it was painted on by the troops. I like the tank, I think it came out well. I want to get some better pictures of it because I feel the pics don't do it justice.
Enjoy!

The Vendetta.
This is 1 of 2. The second is still bare plastic and missing her Lascannons.
For this one, I made my own Lascannon upgrades out of the Heavy Weapons Teams lascannons. My buddy has the Forgeworld ones but suffer from "Forgeworld Droop" (a distant relative to a certain drinking related problem that occurs at the wrong moment). I spent a bit more time painting this over my tanks, but probably because it is a larger kit. I like the end result. I plan on painting the glass on the next one though, which means I might have to paint the glass on this one to keep it uniform.
This was the first time I actually used a decal, which is on the wing (its a red chaos sigil).
The base has logs and boulders (sticks and rocks) that I think came out great.

Enjoy!

Up next is the completed troopers and Sentinels.

I have magnetized all of the sentinel weapons (a task which I would care to not repeat), which I am not sure why I did because I run pretty much just autocannons. The Sentinels are not chaos-y due to being sneaky and snarky, they might be able to confuse/decieve/claim to be exiles in order to suprise the enemy.

Nope, they will be either unarmed guardsmen or generic human models (when I find some) or even some tied up slaves. I will actually use a chaos socerer model for the overseer. In my fluff, he would be the guy orchestrating the whole mess that made my unit turn bad.
Here's a pic of my Chaos Sorcerer that I'm using now before I paint up my new one for this army.

Checked on the Basilisk and Russ this morning before work. Appears a toothbrush will remove all of the paint with ease. I even diluted the Simple Green this time (only my second time using it for stripping) and it seems to be working even better if that is possible. We shall see how easy it all comes off when I get home.
Due up these next couple of days :
Strip, scrub, wash, dry, chaos-ify and prime the Basilisk and Russ
Paint the clothes, boots, belts and guns on (gulp!) 40 Guardsmen and 9 Heavy teams!
By the end of this week, I hope to have these done.
Stay tuned.

I am curious (in a general fashion) why so many "Guard gone wrong" projects use red... ? It is a small matter. I love the expression of creativity these armies bring and this shows a lot of potential.

Liking what I've seen so far and looking forward to what comes next! Subbed!

Funny that you say that about the red. I recently did a comission for a buddy and I used a similar color scheme for his Dark Eldar. I think I personally use red because its my favorite color. Here are two of the Dark Eldar Warriors I did that I was really happy with.
I have a test model of another scheme I was going to try that I will swing down and grab a picture of when I locate my camera. But it was orange cloth/ceramic plate. Looked okay but a little too much "highway clean up crew" in color. Ah well, thanks for the subscription! Off to scrub some paint!

Really nice models you got going there. I enjoy a good traitor guard blog and hope to face a few on the table one day with my own Tanith 1st +allies in a sabbat world style campigan.

Originally my Gue'vesa (traitor humans for tau) were in that scheme too and it really does look good on the table. Those models have since seen the light and returned to the emperors service as tanith for my new P&M.

Im excited to see where this blog is gonna go. Consider my watching in the shadow

Thanks guys! Having the three kids does really hamper my ability to put in as much time as I would like to my hobby, but hey, that's why its a hobby. Plus, my wife likes to see me too. Go figure.
Also, I will subscribe to your blog too, I would love to see some other ideas out there.

Things I did (and took pictures of on my camera at home which I will update tonight, for real this time!):
Scrubbed off 99% of the paint off of the Basilisk and removed the offending Ork models and any remaining Orky-ness.
Attempted to scrub off paint from the Russ, but it was barely coming off. I don't know what type of paint the guy used but it is stubborn (AND leadership 10). Unfortunately, it looks like it was glued with superglue, so the sponsons have fallen off with a light toothbrushing, along with the top hatch and a few of the tread pieces. Bummer. I suspect that I will leave it in the Green for a few more days, then pull out an unassembled model off of the frame.
I went down to get my Guardsmen and my 5 unpainted Autocannon teams caught my eye. I really liked painting the one I have done because mainly it was two dudes, one gun and a lot of basing. The basing does a lot and isn't that labor intensive. As a bonus, my guns are affixed, just the tripods. So that way, I will paint up all of my missile launchers, autocannons and lascannons (I don't forsee me using any other of the heavy weapons unless all of a sudden Mortars are the sh*t in 6th) and swap them out as I see fit. I managed to get their cloth/boots/belts/guns done. I just got to add the red, wash em all up then highlight. Oh and skin.
Then base em up and we are in business.
Stay tuned!

Simple Green is a bit slow at stripping and has a hard time with even GW paint. I use Castrol Super Clean, its an engine degreaser and it will easily remove most paints and primers (even varnish and car primer) quicker than Simple Green.

You can find CSC at Walmart in the automotive section pretty cheap, you can also use Purple Power which is nearly identical but i like Super Clean better out of all 3 ( SG, PP, CSC) it works the best.

CSC will also weaken superglue bonds as well which is good if you have some models you want to take apart.

CSC is more harsh to the skin than SG so use throw-away latex gloves, it IS safe for plastics, metals and FW resins and you can leave models in it for months or years without anything becoming rubbery.

Hey guys,
My Simple Green got most of the paint that was submerged off of the Basilisk and took out some glue too. Also, took off some Ork-y upgrades (which is good) but didn't take off the primer (which is also good).
The Russ is still in the soup.
Here are the Heavy teams. They just have their Khaki and Grey on, no red or washes.
[Thumb - DSCN1952.JPG]
Most of the paint is gone, woot!

Gun fell off due to glue dissolving, which might make some easier painting.

Alright, got 20 minutes last night and finished up the painting portion of those 5 Heavy Weapons teams. All that is left is some creative basing. I might make a lot more use of the reeds this time around as I didn't put a lot of rocks (boulders!) or sticks (LOGS!) on the bases before painting. I was really happy with the unpainted rocks I used on the Valk bases, so maybe I can go find a few and put them on.
I am going to have to take the Russ out of the soup, I gave it a test scrub and it isn't moving. I'm going to have to try one of the other solutions posted by you guys on here.
On another note, I am salivating at the possible Ally rumors for 6th. If the rumors hold true (oh please oh please oh please) you could basically add an ally-able army to yours by taking one HQ and one Troop of that army. I am assuming that would mean you would still need 1HQ and 2Troop of your main army. Then you could fill out the rest of the Force Org with whatever. I'm sure there will be other restrictions, but here is what I am thinking:

Command Squad with Straken Chimera (HQ)
Daemon Prince, wings, Mark of Khrone (or Nurgle) (HQ)
Vet Squad (melta) (Troops)
Vet Squad (plasma) (Troops)
Khorne Berzerkers OR Plague Marines in a Rhino (Troops)
Vendetta (fast)
Vendetta (fast)
Flamer Vets in a Chimera (troops)
Marbo (elite)
Sentinels (fast)
Assorted Heavys between Russes, Manticore, Hydras

I'm usually not too concerned if my army is strong in a gaming sense, but I think something like this would be no slouch. Guard with a strong close combat presence would be fun to play and pretty tough.
Anyways, I digress. If I get some time tonight when I get home, I will base up those Heavy Teams and start on something else.
Stay tuned!

Just finished basing my heavy weapons teams! Woot! I might have to change the name of this blog to "Traitor Guard Speed Painting- No Forgeworld,... until I buy some!"
I am pleased. I did two of these 5 to match my other finished one, using sand, grass and some reeds. The other three have no reeds and some orangish gravel added, to make them a clear team and the reeds guys a team. Great success! Not a lot of traitorness going on here though. Ah well, there will be much more in the near future.
