Got a bit intoxicated last night and thought it would be a good idea to "mod" a storm talon which I only just got. Ive been up all night tinkering and now i can't tell if its a big pile of pooh... I cut the tail off and that is the thing im most worried about I decided i wanted it upside down, but I wasnt really thinking how i was going to reattach it at the time...The Vtol capability is also gone ... ive never done any custom stuff to this extent before would green stuff or plasticard or a mix of both be what i need here any advice would be appreciated some bits are still bluetacked because I thought it was best i just walked away from it
Meet the Storm Paw...
Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated, and yes I know drunk 40k modelling is a bad idea at least now i do.

Thats rather neat. Top quality drunken working
Regarding the tail, you could use bits of sprue to act as a structural framework to hold it in place and the clad the gaps with appropriately trimmed bits of plasticard. Thats what I did for my recent VTOL randomness.

Top quality for a drunk bloke. Go for a total overhaul. Put it away for a couple of days then look at it with fresh (sober) eyes. When you go back to it think ( out of the box) maybe specialist support storm talon.

Thanks flinty i like the idea of using sprue... and your right claphas I'm pretty amazed now I've come back to it lol I much prefer it to the standard storm talon... I'm going to get back to work I have a cool idea for the assault cannon at the front I'm thinking of just having one with some advanced targeter (fluff explanation for twin linked) or even using some smaller terminator assault cannons. Will keep you guys posted thanks for the encouragement!

Yes it official Space Wolves can take the Storm Paw cos as my house mate says who the hell is going to tell them they can't .
Well really im a guard player but we have started playing Apocalypse and i couldnt resist one of these bad boys escorting my Crassus in the comin war we have planned.... the Storm Talon reminded me of Blue Thunder and I love that film. I saw potential in the ST kit but I wasn't happy with the overall look so i'm trying to make it look good (to me at least) from every angle. I want it to fit better with the forgeworld pre heresy predators etc (slightly more elegant) as I intend to get a small force of marines to lead my assaults. I didnt really see the need for the wings to rotate i guess its cool but when did you ever see a runway in 40k? Everything has VTOL (correct me if im wrong) in 40k.. Plus it has boosters underneath it any way.
The fluff will come when its done.
Cheers guys

Quick update ive greystuffed an air frame together from bits of sprue (thanks flinty) for the tail, bits are still blue tacked on so nothing is final as yet. Im now thinkink of magnetising an assault cannon under each wing so they can still rotate freely her'se some new pics. Feedback would be appreciated especially before the gretstuff dries lol

Thanks man i can see where your coming from with that im also getting a slight Grunman Intruder vibe i think its the wide cockpit. Im going to try and get hold of some plasticard today im thinking of creating the shell with regular card first and then using it as a template for the plasticard then ill blend it together with greystuff and add details panels and rivets etc unless any one has a better idea i'm all ears. Think ill keep the templates because I already want another one

Nice. I'm not keen on the 'rockets on the roof' look, but aren't sure where else you could put them if you're mounting the ass cannon under the wings. Hmm, how about under the jet engines?

If you ever see a picture of Blue Thunder you would understand why i put the pods there..... "She don't fly pretty... cos she ain't pretty". Also they fit really nicely there. I was considering using drop pod cyclone launchers under the wings for the rockets but I really like the idea of the bullet and las fire shooting past the pilot on either side. What do others think? Is it an aesthetics thing or a practicality issue? I understand you would idealy want anti personel weapondry lower down on the craft but practicality kinda goes out the window with 40k.

Pro Tip: quit using your camera sideways. The pics are 600x450, so you aren't really gaining much by doing it sideways, and the right side up ones have more than enough room to show off the model from all angles.
back on topic: nice conversion.
Now fix them pics!

Steal away guys to many people starting ork armies because of that damn cool flyer I nearly did myself but I was speaking to the guy in the southampton store about what I like and dislike ST wise and i decided to mod it but it went a little furthur than originally planned. I would appreciate any props as me and my housemate plan to start doing commisions that was originally just for painting but im loving this custom stuff. If it turns out well we will do a youtube tutorial for the next one. Thanks for the kind words everyone!

I may just have to get one of these now, and stop complaining about how they look.
I love the extra length you have given this, and the side shots make it look Like an Orca (Killer Whale). Quite possibly I'd go not just for the 'wings forward' look of your last set of pictures, but cut them parallel that way.
Then again, I am a fan of the original TV version of "Thunderbird 2".

Thought id post some new pics with some of my Guards and my house mates Blood Angels none of which are yet finished but they are tabletop standard . Im still playing around with different configurations i quite like this one although its not legal as a storm talon. Also changed the name to Storm Shadow.... Storm Paw just sounds to tame lol Started doing the tail section with plasticard which im finding frustrating to say the least but im getting better at it as I go along. It will take me a couple of days or so to get it right there are some gaps which was expected but they will vanish once i apply the greystuff. I quite like the pods under the wings now ...whats do you guys think? been making templates as i go along so my next one shouldn't be as hard im just deciding on how i want the tail section to merge with the main fuselage ive got a few ideas but you guys will have to wait. Enjoy!

A couple more pics from yesterdays session... I would really appreciate feedback on which design people prefer because im torn between the gun pods on the roof or under the wings... I still have to sort out the assault cannons but i will do that once i have finished the plasticarding.

Man first this makes me want to get the storm talon because this looks way more beastly than the one gw modeled. Second on where to but the pods i personally like them under the wings because of it jet fighter look.

Ghost and Wolf brother thanks very much I am leaning very much on mounting the gun/missile pods under the wings it has more of a A10 feel I thought about larger wings as well but i dont want to make it to big a target and i know what you mean I want a whole squadron of these for apocalypse although my decision making is probably somewhat biased lol.
Warboss funny you mention that I was discussing with my housemate some ideas we have for the storm raven so it could be a future project.
NA ive been making templates as i go along I plan to make another after this one so my aim is to simplify and refine the process and hopefully upload templates for peeps to print off. Ive had a few requests for people wanting me to make them one which i would love to do as well but as I told them wait for the finished product.
Also does anyone know the arc of fire of the assault cannons on the talon because I want the miniature to be as wysiwyg as poss.
Cheers

This is almost exactly what I had in mind when I first saw this model... Although I had pictured the weapon pods attached to the turbines, rather than up on the roof.
I like how you have mounted the missile pods, though. Works better than the sideways mount on the roof that others have tried.
The lengthened tail is what really 'fixes' the 'talon, though.
