This is awesome. Even though I own the complete Field Manual, I'm still picking this up!

For those who haven't used DriveThru RPG, the service is pretty cool. The PDF files you download have your name embedded on them to discourage sharing, and I think some have various PDF features disabled, but there's not a lot. So very few problems using the files on various devices, making copies for backup, printing, etc.

The only real issue I've run into is that the PDF's appear to have lots of layers and are often slow to load/scroll through, though having decent PDF's is super useful and certainly saves on stuff to lug around.

Heavy Gear has definitely improved a lot since I first took a look at it. The new production methods and artwork are helping differentiate the factions.

Are the rules available for free standard? If not, they should consider it. The minis are hard to find and higher than expected cost, having the rules and fiction out.

Now if only they could switch away from the really bad faux anime style with all the blocky heads. That art style hasn't been interesting for a long time.

Have you looked at newer books like NuCoal? The art style has changed a bit, mainly due to new authors. It's still got some anime themes, because it's an anime-inspired game.

I'm actually very partial to Heavy Gear's anime style look, especially it's rather specific sort of mid 90's take on it, plus it's what I remember from the original video game manuals from when I was but a wee babe in middle school

I think it works rather well for the world they built around it, though as mentioned, the NuCoal book that recently came out has very different, albeit still somewhat anime, art style.

Awesome! I've got a BUNCH of the 1/400 gundam figures and I've been thinking for a while now of using Heavy Gear rules for em, I just never got around to picking up the rulebooks. Now I guess I'll just have to move that project up a bit!

The minis are hard to find in actual retail stores.

Of the 7 or shops around Socal near my area, only 1 stocks it, and they recently put it back in a bin.

Also, I don't have a problem with the anime look, I have a problem with the game's specific style. Way too much use of really gaudy gradients that stem back to the early 90s and the first computer graphics and early web design. Even worse are the humans, which look worse than dragon ball Z characters.

They should consider taking the 3D files that they use to print the new miniatures, then have someone on the team texture them up and take beauty shots of.

Otherwise, the rules and game look really good. It's one the games I was originally looking into before deciding on a different game.

For the curious, I did a very simple army list with the Northern contents and it's about 960 points to purely get the base chassis (Just swaps to match the box contents where different). This doesn't include adding any special weapons, many of which are included.

For those who do not play the game, 800 points is a fairly standard tournament level. 1000 point games are also common. It is of course possible to play with larger numbers of points, but I think the game works best around this level.

Also, the Task Forces include most of the units for the force. There are a few things that are left out such as tanks, striders, troop transports, and unusual mechs, but not much.

Not really sure, but todays release is kind of terrain-related.
