The time has come, I finally got my hands dirty with Traitor Guard, kit I'm in love with for quite some time. As I really hate the bulkyness of Cadians, and had an amazing opportunity to buy cheap-ish Elysians, I decided to combine the Traitor Guard torso with Elysian legs, to end with something quite cool (IMHO).

(20 built)

(50 more waiting in the box)

With the coming of 6th ed, some guys are getting rid of their models, so I also got few second hand models. Sadly these are in terrible shape - I already had to break/saw/rebuild all three vehicles, and the old chimera model is missing some parts (yay for converting in future), I'm not _that much_ disappointed for the price...

(Cadians, after stripping and some converting, will end up being mutant rabble, I guess)

To calm down after stripping/rebuilding/... I dedicated yesterday's afternoon to the first troop model (yes, I'm terribly slow painter). This is a test for colour scheme. I'm not yet absolutely sold on the brownish jacket, but it looked terrible all-green. C&C most welcomed, of course.

Edit: Thanks Zwan1One for the "spec-ops" idea

As I had one more free afternoon, here is a WIP of next Traitor. I still need to add a little more glow to the eyes, and (more importantly) make a decision on the plasma glow colour. What do you think would be better? Blue or Green?

What do you guys think of the heat-stained gun barrel? Is it any good?

Woah. Badass! They look like traitor spec ops with the mix of forgeworld infantry. The glowing eyes are certainly effective! Can't wait to see more!

Subbed. These look fantastic. I'm a huge fan of the colour scheme and the green eyes really set the whole thing off.

The heat stain looks great, what's the recipe?

Snrub, Zwan1One, evlidrcheese: thanks for the compliments!

evildrcheese:
* VMC Brass (I guess Tin bitz from GW is the equivalent, but I'm not sure)
* the half of the barrel closer to the gun body, and the recesses washed with devlan mud (so you end up with clean front half of the barrel
* front half washed with Leviathan Purple (slightly feathered into the devlan mud part)
* the "tip" of the barrel washed with thinned Asurmen Blue wash.

I think I've overdone it a bit with the devlan mud though, next time, I'd thin it too.

Elysian legs with Renegade torsos & arms look great. I'll have to keep a tab on this log.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

I've always wanted to see what those torsos look like on elysian legs... It brought a tear to my eye they're so beautiful.

Looks like the start of a fantastic looking army. Really envy you and all your FW models

Really liking the look of the paint scheme as well...looking evil and nurgle-ish.

As for the plasma glow, I would recommend purple since it has more of a hint of evil in its color. After that I'd choose blue but that's pretty normal for a plasma glow colour and these guys should really stand out. Green would be a no for me since it wouldn't contrast enough with the pants.

Anyway, I'm subbing to this thread to keep a close eye on the progress.

Great mix of parts and an ace colour scheme/detailed paint job. The models you've made look like they are the perfect scale (consider this idea stolen!).

More please!

Brotheralexos, dangledorf2.0, Eggroll, 02Laney: thanks for the kind words, this motivates me more than I'd think!

Eggroll: Thanks for the ideas, to be honest, I'm still not sure, whether I even want to add glow to the plasmas, as I'd like to keep attention on glowing eyes (yes, poor trick, I know ). But I've played around with Gimp this morning (as 5am to 6am seems to be the only hobby time for me now), and mocked up some glows.

At the moment, the bog-standard seems to be the least distracting, but for the moment, I'll keep it non-glowing in line with the standard GW Cadian scheme (yes, I'm very good at postponing decisions )

02Laney: I'm looking forward to seeing your take on this "Traitor Guard Spec-ops" (yes, Zwan1One, I'm stealing that for sure )

So, after two weeks of being absolutely swamped in work and the rest of RL, I finally got few spare hours, to get my hands dirty with hobby (yay!). As I was not in the mood for painting, I decided to build a brand-spankin-new Chimera

(my friend left me some counterfeit tankists, which he did not need for his Imperial superheavy)

Also, I started "conversion" (might be better to say restoration) of the missing pieces for the second-hand Chimera

It's not as good as the original (i.e. the complete new chimera), but it's IMHO much better than this.

(yes, this is the yet-not-restored other side)

I have not yet worked up, how to make the missing guns, but I guess some spare bits, and a blob of GS will do the job

Looking really cool... Really interesting colour scheme you've chosen (in a good way) and its looking really good. Have you decided on a colour of the plasma glow? I'm torn between the purple and green IMHO but I think the green does bring the entire model together more

Beasty - thanks for the kind words. At the moment, I'm leaving plasmas without the glow effect. I'm planning to reconsider it once I have a full unit - if the plasma guys are too dull, I'll probably go for the green glow.

Every time I get to building these Renegade spec-ops, I'm both happy and mad. Why mad? I guess it's the resin particles Nah, I'm always struck by how much extra work is needed to be done on FW resin model, before assembly - it's not enough to just cut it from 'sprues' and remove mold lines. Bubbles need to be filled, bended parts rectified, hot soapy water bath, clean each part with toothbrush, rinse in clean water (and repeat once more)...

But the result is IMHO well worth it. In the end, FW models are milion levels better than the bog-standard GW Imperial Guard, and I'm also always glad, that I'm not building the Elysians, as there would be at least twice the number of separate pieces for each individual trooper.

(hopefully, I'll get these ten guys built this evening)

If you want some sweet Mutant Rabble conversions, then try getting a set of Chaos Spawn. Adding in the few tentacles, lame arms, spikes, insectoid limbs, and etc would make for wonderful Rabble.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Haha! I feel honoured!

I've never attempted FW. But I do admire the detail and style of the sculpts. One day I'll be brave enough to attempt it myself.
Unti then I'll have to enjoy these kind of blogs instead(not a bad thing).

How long does each soldier take from start to finish?

Brotheralexos: thanks for the tip. My original plan was to kitbash the cadians + pink horrors + GS tentacles, but Chaos Spawn seems like a cool source of bits!

Zwan1One: Brave enough to build it, or paint the models? Building is not _as bad_ as I probably made it seem. It's just more time-consuming than the plastic models. And painting FW is IMHO much easier, because you actually have all these details (like folds on cloth), and it's not necessary to do intricate shading on huge flat surfaces (Space Marines, I'm looking at you!). Also, washes (even though I almost don't use them on these models), make your life much easier - once again because of all the details, which can be brought forward by simply washing the model.

Ad the time per soldier: it takes me about three hours to clean & build the unit of ten (so it's about 20 minutes to build one), and then something between hour and two to paint one. But the 'test models' always take a bit longer, so I'm not yet sure, how long will it take to actually paint one, once I'm "in the rhythm".

Still looking good, and thanks for the recipe for the heat stain, I'll give that a whirl soon I reckon.

Keep it up
