bosky wrote:Small world as I also just bought Song of Blades and Heroes yesterday. It was especially enticing since Ganesha Games is promising free updates when they release the next revision. I've played Mordheim and other fantasy skirmish games in the past but I'm REALLY liking the look of the "gamble" activation system in SBH. Plus I can finally find a use for my Goblin figures from my Advanced Heroquest days. I'm hoping to get some friends interested in some quick pick up games.
Thanks for the writeup though, I'll be checking out your previous posts too.
Welcome to SBH! Ganesha is very good about revisions. I've already gotten one free update of SBH a couple years ago and when Song of the Splintered Lands went from an expansion to a stand alone game, I got a free update there also. I think you'll like the Gambling activation system it really makes every decision count.
Glad you like the writeup, check our club's blog for alot more SBH action.

Also I take it you recommend Song of Deeds and Glory as a supplement? I'm going to try to get a few games of vanilla SBH in before I buy more PDFs, but they have so many available that I was wondering if you had any recommendations on the top ones?
In order of preference
SDG-Song of Deeds and Glory is my favorite supplement. I have them all, but it's probably my favorite however...
SGD-Song of Gold and Darkness:Fun supplement if you like dungeon games, also has alot of usefull special rules.
SWW-Song of Wind and Water: Lots of weather and terrain rules, and also some great warband advances. I still like it, but it's my least favorite addition. Unfortunately, there's a few parts of Song of Deeds and Glory that you need the SWW weather rules for.
Others to consider later, that are stand-alones that also function as expansions:
SSL- Song of the Splintered Lands: Probably my favorite Ganesha Games book. It's a stand-alone. It has the basic SBH rules combined with rules and background for sentient animals a'la Redwall, Narnia, etc. Lots of fun.
SAM-Song of Arthur and Merlin: Another stand alone that is a must-buy if you're interested in using SBH for Aurthurian adventures or for Historical Dark Age skirmish.
There's a bundle here that combines all except SSL.

Even if you have SBH, it still saves 5 bucks or so.

I havent even had a chance to play a game yet. Im right in the middle of what may be a 19 day straight work run, gotta take the overtime while I can get it. Ive also got so many minis that will work for the game (Heroscape, WHFB, Hordes, AoW) sitting around Im not sure where to start. Im thinking its gonna be some Trollbloods against some of my wifes ever growing collection of demon (deamon) and such minis.
I would recommend just jumping right in with a very simple warband of figs you already have painted. For beginners I try not to weigh the warbands down with alot of special rules at first.
As an example, I've attached a PDF of the three warbands I made for the LEGO SBH game I wrote about here:

They're pretty basic lists, each with a simple theme and a couple characterful features surprises.
