Had the second session of our bi-weekly summer campaign. This time we got two games each in instead of 1.
I managed to pull of two victories even using a very non-optimized warband. Full writeup by one of our members here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/07/song-of-blades-heroes-campaign-session.html

If you'd like to read about the first session, you can see it here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/06/song-of-blades-heroes-campaign-session.html
Details about how the campaign is run are here:
http://chicagoskirmish.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-fantasy-campaign-song-of-blades.html

Suffice to say we've been playing Song of Blades and heroes periodical;y for a couple years, but playing a campaign with rules from the "Song of Deeds and Glory" supplement has added a whole new dimension to our play, and made it even more fun and engaging.

A few pics to whet your appetite. Mine are the figs with the tan rimmed bases
Battle one, a random encounter against a pair of mounted bird riders and their fairy swarms.

Battle two, a treasure hunt (3 treasures, find the right one, etc...) against an undead horde.

If there's anyone in the Chicago area who wants to join in, the campaign is structured in a way that allows folks to join in at anytime, either to start an advancing warband or to just to guest play a non-advancing force.

I just got a copy of Song of Blades and Heroes yesterday...and I must say it looks great. I have a ton of fantasy minis kicking around, I think this weekend the wife and I are going to whip up a couple warbands and give it a go.

Whats my game?

Glad to hear it! I hope you enjoy SBH. If you have any questions let me know. Beware though, SBH is addictive!

We played the third session last week. This time, in a city. We should have a report on that soon.

we are really liking the fact that we can do small model count warbands designed to our liking. I think we are both going to end up with several warbands, which will provide great variety in our games. Probably will end up doing one for our older son as well.

Small world as I also just bought Song of Blades and Heroes yesterday. It was especially enticing since Ganesha Games is promising free updates when they release the next revision. I've played Mordheim and other fantasy skirmish games in the past but I'm REALLY liking the look of the "gamble" activation system in SBH. Plus I can finally find a use for my Goblin figures from my Advanced Heroquest days. I'm hoping to get some friends interested in some quick pick up games.
Thanks for the writeup though, I'll be checking out your previous posts too.

Also I take it you recommend Song of Deeds and Glory as a supplement? I'm going to try to get a few games of vanilla SBH in before I buy more PDFs, but they have so many available that I was wondering if you had any recommendations on the top ones?

I havent even had a chance to play a game yet. Im right in the middle of what may be a 19 day straight work run, gotta take the overtime while I can get it. Ive also got so many minis that will work for the game (Heroscape, WHFB, Hordes, AoW) sitting around Im not sure where to start. Im thinking its gonna be some Trollbloods against some of my wifes ever growing collection of demon (deamon) and such minis.

Welcome to SBH! Ganesha is very good about revisions. I've already gotten one free update of SBH a couple years ago and when Song of the Splintered Lands went from an expansion to a stand alone game, I got a free update there also. I think you'll like the Gambling activation system it really makes every decision count.

Glad you like the writeup, check our club's blog for alot more SBH action.

In order of preference

SDG-Song of Deeds and Glory is my favorite supplement. I have them all, but it's probably my favorite however...
SGD-Song of Gold and Darkness:Fun supplement if you like dungeon games, also has alot of usefull special rules.
SWW-Song of Wind and Water: Lots of weather and terrain rules, and also some great warband advances. I still like it, but it's my least favorite addition. Unfortunately, there's a few parts of Song of Deeds and Glory that you need the SWW weather rules for.

Others to consider later, that are stand-alones that also function as expansions:

SSL- Song of the Splintered Lands: Probably my favorite Ganesha Games book. It's a stand-alone. It has the basic SBH rules combined with rules and background for sentient animals a'la Redwall, Narnia, etc. Lots of fun.
SAM-Song of Arthur and Merlin: Another stand alone that is a must-buy if you're interested in using SBH for Aurthurian adventures or for Historical Dark Age skirmish.

There's a bundle here that combines all except SSL.

Even if you have SBH, it still saves 5 bucks or so.

I would recommend just jumping right in with a very simple warband of figs you already have painted. For beginners I try not to weigh the warbands down with alot of special rules at first.

As an example, I've attached a PDF of the three warbands I made for the LEGO SBH game I wrote about here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/465003.page
They're pretty basic lists, each with a simple theme and a couple characterful features surprises.

Thanks for the slew of information Eilif. I'm definitely following the campaign progress on your blog as it really gets me jazzed up to try SBH. Do you think I could just buy SDG and be fine without SWW, or are the parts requiring SWW absolutely integral? It'd be nice if they did a huge book with everything in it, but that is probably too much to ask from a smaller publisher. I've looked at the Mutants and Death Ray Guns version of SBH for possible post apocalyptic games, but I'll have to even TRY the original before I go wild, haha.

It's definitely possible to use SDG without SWW. You just won't have weather effects for your scenarios and a few of the advances will be missing. Especially if you are just starting out, you probably won't want to incorporate weather effects anyway.

If you get the SBH bug, you'll probably end up with all the supplements in the end but there's no rush.

As for SBH and Post apoc, MDRG looks fun (own it but haven't played it), but it's defintely an 80's "Gamma-world" style post-apoc. There is a "regular" post-apoc game in the works that should be out in a few months. My club was one of the playtesters for it.
