love the skull and crossbones icon
for wood grain, I don't think you'd really be able to see it 28mm scale, so you could probably just get away with a dark brown base color and maybe streak it up a wee bit with lighter shades of brown to represent wear and tear?

I think you can do the woodgrain, but you need a steady hand and a very fine brush. Work up small thin streaks of paint and you should get some nice results. I'm sure there's tutorial you can find somewhere too...

I'm certainly no expert and have never tried this before but you could lightly score (cut lines into) the pieces you want to have a wood texture using a blade, paint it and then apply a darker brown shade to fill in the tiny cuts you made.
Just an idea

do you want wooden bolter casings?
anyway, i found this tutorial about painting woodgrain
i love the golden bolter idea... maybe a turquoise wash to give the metals that old/weathered feel you often see on bronze and other metals?

I've had good luck actually creating a grain by running coarse sandpaper or a stiff wire brush along the plastic, then painting thin coats of my base wood color and washing with a darker brown. It works best on larger, more open surfaces, though, so if you're just looking to do the handles, paint is your best bet. If you plan to make some themed bases or terrain, though, I suggest giving it a try.
