Subject: Battle Sisters at the Golden Throne GT (Game 1 of 7 and General Comments)
I tested out taking my camera to the last tourney I played in and it turned out to be a good luck charm. I also enjoyed revisiting the games and seeing all the stuff I had done wrong. So when I went to the Golden Throne, I brought the camera again to see if I could take enough pictures in the heat of battle to be able to make at least a few coherent Battle Reports.
I'll start posting reports as soon as I get the pictures uploaded. For now I'll put up my list as a placeholder:

Game 1 vs Grey Knights Mission: Crusade (3 Objectives) Deployment: Dawn of War
Grey Knights Army:
Spoiler:
HQ Castellan Crowe
ELITE Vindicare Assassin
TROOPS 5x Purifiers, 2x Psycannon, 1x MC Hammer, 2x Halberds, Rhino 5x Purifiers, 2x Psycannon, 1x MC Hammer, 2x Halberds, Rhino 5x Purifiers, 2x Psycannon, 1x MC Hammer, 2x Halberds, Rhino 8x Purifiers, 2x Psycannon, 1x MC Hammer, 5x Halberds
HEAVY SUPPORT Dreadnought w/ 2x Twin-Linked Autocannon, Psybolts Dreadnought w/ 2x Twin-Linked Autocannon, Psybolts
FORTIFICATION Aegis Defense Line with a Quad Gun
Deployment
Spoiler:
I won the roll for Deployment and chose to go first. You can see two objectives each next to a tree. I deployed my army how I frequently would. I set up one Retributor squad on the Quad Gun, the other wherever I could get a good line of fire and I flanked them with my BSS foot squads. I kept the Seraphim on the table because I felt they would be OK trying to cross the table.
This picture is acutally a little bit off. The two Dominion Immos are up on the brown rocks, preparing to make their scout moves.
This picture is from the bottom of Turn 1, but does a good job showing the Grey Knights' deployment. He had three Rhino Purifier squads behind the blue ruin. He made a little corral with the Aegis Line around the objective on his side of the table and deployed his larger foot unit of Purifiers near it. His Vindicare Assassin was behind his Aegis wall right next to the Ruin and Crowe was on the Quad Gun!
Sisters Turn 1
Spoiler:
This is in my opponent's movement phase. My alpha-strike was underwhelming. I wanted to break as many Rhinos as possible because Purifiers on foot are both slow and killable. I took out one, but pretty much whiffed after that.
The rest of my shooting was limited to putting a wound on the Vindicare and Crowe each. I think the Vindicare went to ground for the 2+ from the Aegis line. It was at this point that we discovered a small hitch for Purifiers and an Aegis line. Fearless units can't go to ground!
Grey Knights Turn 1
Spoiler:
His shooting was strong against my Dominions. One Immo exploded, the other lost its multi-melta, one Dominon squad was whittled down to a melta girl and a VSS, and the other broke an ran into the crater left by their transport.
Sisters Turn 2
Spoiler:
Undaunted, the Dominions rally and the other squad advanced on the Purifiers, killing two.
The Seraphim advanced into the midfield terrain. (The models laying down were just wobbly. I think I passed all of the dangerous terrain checks.) This picture also shows the results of my shooting this turn. Crowe and the Assassin are dead!
Grey Knights Turn 2
Spoiler:
Firing from the Dreds and Purifiers whittled down some of the Seraphim. Look out Sir! rolls let me pass off the wounds to the bolter girls in the rear.
Both Dominions are dead! I'm not too upset though. They tied up some units that could have been trying to score objectives.
Sisters Turn 3
Spoiler:
Where'd the Purifiers go? Celestine and the Seras made short work of them! I think they actually killed 6 of 8 and my Heavy Bolters took care of the rest.
The weaponless Immolator is putting some fear back into the Fearless Purifiers!
The Battle Sisters on either end of my ADL start to move towards the objectives.
Grey Knights Turn 3
Spoiler:
A very poorly documented turn. I believe some of the Purifiers re-embarked after dealing with my menacing Immolator. Celestine and her squad were ruthlessly cut down by the Dreadnaughts.
Sisters Turn 4
Spoiler:
I blew up one of the Psyflemen and glanced (I think) the Rhino. It's not pictured, but I continued to move by BSSs towards the objectives.
Grey Knights Turn 4
Spoiler:
With all of my units cleared from his side of the field, the Purifiers hopped back in their tanks and started to go after the objectives as well. (The turn counter die says "5", but this shot was taken at the start of the turn.)
Sisters Turn 5
Spoiler:
I blew up the Rhino that was closest to the GK's objective, but was unable to wipe out the squad. My Battle Sisters were now close enough to control of their objective.
The Battle Sisters on my right secure their objective. There are no enemies within miles.
Grey Knights Turn 5
Spoiler:
The last remaining Rhino drives up to screen the Purifiers on the objective. Combined fire brings down two Battle Sisters, possibly pushing them off of their objective. I say possibly, because we rolled and the game continued for another turn, so I never bothered to measure.
Sisters Turn 6
Spoiler:
The last Rhino is destroyed, but I'm still unable to finish off the scraps of all the Purifier squads. The Battle Sisters consolidate their position.
Grey Knights Turn 6
Spoiler:
What remains of his army (7 Purifiers and a Dreadnought) puts all of their shots onto my objective. Despite taking out over half of the unit, they hold fast, refusing to yield their objective!
The Aftermath
Spoiler:
The Sisters hold two of the three objectives, were able to slay Crowe, and struck First Blood. The Grey Knights control an objective and were able to slay the Living Saint.
Sisters Win! 8-4

It was good meeting you at the event (I was the one with the red/purple nidzilla). Looking forward to the rest of reports, especially since I couldn't watch your last game.

Same here, it's always nice to put a face on a Dakka handle. You finished 5th, right? (Or was that another Tyranid player?)
It'll probably be a little while before I can get Game 7 up, but it was absurdly close! I got caught up in it and I'm pretty sure I forgot to take pictures of the last turn though.

I just saw the video you put up in the Tournament thread. It looks like I got you mixed up with some other Tyranid player, sorry!

No problem! I got 17th after losing to Reece in the last round. I was row away when you were playing him though and was paying close attention rooting on the sisters to glory!
Was a Tyranid in 5th? I thought Vince lost to Frankie in round 6?

Weren't the war bosses falling back? You get points for them if they are.

pretre wrote:Weren't the war bosses falling back? You get points for them if they are.
There was a bit of a rules question there. First, whether or not the Warbosses would have to take a Ld check if the Nobz were wiped out in the shooting phase. The thought being that when their squad is destroyed they cease to be part of the unit and ICs don't take break tests from shooting. Second, what happens after that.
The rules say that when its unit is destroyed an IC stops being part of the unit at the start of the next phase which implies that a Ld check is necessary in the shooting phase and that the IC can break. However, what happens after that I'm not really sure. So the Warbosses are no longer part of the Nob squad, but are they still a unit of Warbosses or just two independent bosses? If they are a unit of Warbosses, are they considered to still be broken, since the unit that failed the Ld check no longer exists?
I'm sure those questions have answers but we were running a little low on time. I think we ultimately decided that they would break and then become ICs which would rally automatically.

The warbosses passed the Ld and regrouped on Reece's turn.
Then he did the rest of his thing.
Then on Amerikon's turn, I believe the only things he did was to roll for Celestine and also to regroup his troops who were falling back before calling it game.
@Amerikon
Great games so far.
Ironically, I wanted to play against Reece's nob bikers and not against your army. I was thinking that your army would actually give me more problems. However, I also think that Reece's deathstar army is one that I just may have problems with as well. But mainly, I just wanted to give him some payback for beating my daemons last time we played.
What happened with his warboss was this. They fell back because they were still a part of the nob biker unit this turn. They don't become their own unit until the start of their next turn. Then on Reece's turn, he can regroup on his normal warboss LD. He rolled 1,1 to pass. However, because they just regrouped that turn, they basically can't do anything but consolidate and shoot at snapshot mode so he basically just ignored them.

Your Necrons against the Bikers would be an absolute slaughter.

Well done Amerikon, I was curious how you defeated Nob Bikers. I've had difficulty facing them back in 5th using codex Witch Hunters. Though that was before I discovered how useful codex Witch Hunter Seraphims were way back then. Despite not having Spirit of the Martyr for 3++, it seems the Phims bolstered by Saint Celestine's fearless presence is still good at tying up unit in assault.
Excellent work and congrats on the first two games. I look forward reading the rest.

Thanks! Nob Bikers are even better than they used to be. Now they get the wound shenanigans without having to worry with all of the separate wargear bits and their natural T5 denies instant death from our Meltas and Exorcists. Not to mention that they now get FNP against those same guns and against our Rending attacks.
I wish I could take credit for having "figured out" Nob Bikers or something cool like that but, against that list, it just boils down to "will this guy fail enough saves before I get eaten". Yeah, I sac'd my Seraphim to get another round of shooting, but really this whole game felt hollow. I might has well have just won a coinflip.
Cool battle reports, and congratulations on your victory! I just have one suggestion-- can you make your pictures smaller? Right now, they break the tables on the forum post and make the page take an inordinate amount of time to load.

Well played, Amerikon! We had a few quibbles on rules, but you are a very good player and I enjoyed our game. I look forward to a rematch!
Damn, that was so crazy when my entire jetbike squad got wiped by overwatch from 5 sisters! haha, and then I failed 12/13 saves that last turn of shooting and the Nob Bikers just melted. Failing that last morale check was the nail in the coffin to the game. Had that not happened, I could have still won. Oh well. Next time I won't drink so many beers before a tough game, hahaha, that was stupid of me.
Giving up First Blood with the Trukk was dumb, too. I basically handed you the game with that. My thinking was to destroy the Quad gun using every weapon at my disposal, but that was a bad choice.
And I disagree that Jy2 would slaughter my Orks with his Flyer. Nob Bikers actually average about 2 HP of damage to an AV11 flyer per volley, and only the Doom Scythes scare me. Jim and I both were hoping to play that one out, as I think with clever play I could have done just fine. Oh well, maybe we'll get to try that out.

Yeah, I took that into account when I made my claim. The long and short of it is that those 2 HP (which discounts his Jink saves, btw) are all you'd have (assuming the same list). So you can possibly expect to take out 1 Scythe per 2 turns of shooting IF none of the Nobs die. The Doom Scythes outrange Nobs (30" threat for Nobs, 48+" for the Scythe) and will be able to dictate who gets the first shot off. He doesn't have to roll to hit and will wipe half the Nobz the Death Ray touches.
That's just the bikers! The only other AT in the army is a single Power Klaw and a Singing Spear. So even if you can deny shooting attacks on the Bikers (most likely because you're in CC with something) the rest of your army just stands around and gets shot up. I honestly can't imagine a scenario outside of really hot dice where the Orks come even close to winning.
I could certainly be wrong here and we play the games for a reason. jy2's a batrep makin' fool so I'm sure y'all could make it happen.

Since I'm being disagreeable, I'll disagree with this too.
Look at the picture in the "Sisters Turn 3" section. I'll let you pick any two of the units there and kill them with your warbosses. For me to win after that I have to either kill just your Warlord, or kill either of the two Warbosses and the 5 Orks on the left. To reliably expect to kill one of the Warbosses, I need to put 2 or 3 wounds on him (that would give me a 75-88% chance of 1+ failed save). So I guess it's technically true that you "could have still won", but it's profoundly unlikely.
Seriously, once your bikers were dead this game was pretty much over, which I have to think is how you'd expect it to work.

Well, it is also profoundly unlikely to lose 3 bikes to overwatch from 5 sisters, or to fail 12 of 13, 4+/5++ saves as well and then to fail a leadership 9 check! Hahah.
I am not saying what would or would not have happened of course, but that victory was a possibility. Not in my favor, but then, not much had gone my way that game! Celestine is just so damn good in book missions. Her getting up was brutal after that terrible turn of luck I had. It was like a 3-4 point swing.
Oh, and I was wrong about the bonus points in Purge, they are 2 total, not 3, sorry about that. I misread the rule, it was clarifying that they were NOT worth 3. Been playing that one wrong.
I also forgot my stupid Boss Pole, that was a bummer. But that is my fault.
I would play Jy2's flyers for sure. He and I both wanted to play that game, actually.
KP would be the only game I would worry about. In objectives I could largely ignore and our maneuver the flyers and then play to objectives.
You're free to hold whatever opinion you choose of course, and as you said, it's why we play the game, but I don't think it would be a slaughter as you stated, at all.
Lol. I'm not as confident against Reece's orks as Amerikon is. That is because you don't just consider the lists. You have to consider the player as well. Reece is a damn cunning general. Last time I faced him in tournament play, I though I had him outmatched with a superior matchup. And then I almost lost. I was saved when the game went on to Turn 7. So dice aside, you can't really discount a good general, because he can make a good list great.
Now with that said, I still think orks would be the underdog in our matchup in any mission other than the Relic.
But I guess we will find out soon enough the next time I drop by Frontline Gaming.
Reecius wrote:Well, it is also profoundly unlikely to lose 3 bikes to overwatch from 5 sisters, or to fail 12 of 13, 4+/5++ saves as well and then to fail a leadership 9 check! Hahah.
Sure, I was just allowing for what actually had happened to happen and then giving you the benefit of passing the LD check and then killing any two units you'd like.

Yeah, I checked it when I wrote the report and made sure the points were right. That would also mean that Celestine getting back up is a 2pt shift.
Yes Celestine is good, but she's not all that impressive by herself. If she doesn't have Seraphim to back her up she's very easy to tarpit (a fact that won the game for Christian in our semi-final match) and you're always at the mercy of her 4+. She stayed down for 4 straight turns in my first game and she failed her first shot at getting up in this game too. People only ever remember the games where Celestine did something silly and caused them to lose.
Reecius wrote:I also forgot my stupid Boss Pole, that was a bummer. But that is my fault.
Sure, but you'd have to have killed your other Warboss to get the re-roll. (I'm assuming he would have failed his save. )

The forum should automatically resize the images to fit your browser window. If that's not happening try doing a hard refresh. Other than that, I can't really do much else since everyone has a different sized screen. The images themselves aren't that big, maybe 300KB per.
Anyway, my batreps are so good it's worth the wait!
