The end product is supposed to be an oil-refinery style town. I plan on having a layer of snow over everything. I'm using a lot of GW stuff as a guide for building, as it is my first stuff.

I plan on Buying AoBR and modding the space marines like crazy, going to try out Green stuff. Any good places to buy it besides amazon?

I'm more interested in modeling then playing, so I will probably also get some tau and DE (eventually)

Any tips to liven up the snow? I think it looks plain.

Like the pipeline, I ought to make one of those. The river water also has a nice texture. Snow is an interesting way to go, I'd say the way to make it look realistic would be to think about how snow piles up at different depths in drifts or where it has been shoveled, you could give it more depth by building it up with something (putty maybe) before putting snow texture on. I've never tried making snow (maybe baking soda and pva?) but I am sure someone else can give you some first hand knowledge.

The pipeline is ok, I just need to find a way to connect with something else, so that it isn't so 'floaty'
I used white stained glass for the water.
I would be concerned with how well baking soda would hold up over time.

my understanding is Baking soda and PVA hold up ok, it just gradually turns yellow unless sealed or painted...

If your needing to use a filler to build up I suggest LIGHTWEIGHT Spackle. the light weight stuff is really fluffy and well... lightweight when it dries... can be a pain to apply but use it to build up then put your snow texture on top. downside is it takes a day to dry hard. but after that you can sand it to shape it even more

Thanks, Ill keep it in mind while I finish up the buildings and start to add details like snow. I left the units in the pic to give a sense of scale.

Update: extended the river and built a bridge. Also connected the pipeline to the ground and did a spray paint base coat. I need to work on making the river look less segmented and I might make the open end of the pipe look damaged.

My first Conversion model ever, I took a Khorne Berserker and am trying to make plague marine. I think I definitely added too much, but it was my first one so i was experimenting a lot.

not bad man. Your paint looks fuzzy on the model though. did you use low quality acrylics? The conversion looks pretty good though

The Plague marine looks good. The thing you have to realize with Plague Marines is that they're supposed to look terrible.

If I had a dollar for every dollar I spent I'd have all my money back.

Yes, it's an old set of paint my sister had sitting around (10+ years old lol), I'm going to pick up some better stuff though for when AoBR comes, which should be Friday. I'm not really sure how much to spend though, will stop by Hobby Lobby and see what they have.

I got a pm about this, so I thought I would post it here: I'm using insulation foam for the buildings.

Update: base coat for the buildings + snow. Also started painting the support beams of the oil drill red. I've looked online for a guide, but haven't really found any for painting a building. Does anyone know any good techniques for the outside?

Got AoBR, and some new paints. I'll be converting the Marines to a chaos army, about half the tactic squad to plague marines, and the other half to a CSM squad.

Updated: I've been learning how to do washes with my orcs. My first orc painted:

Nice job for first time Not sure if your going to be building the orks into an army or not but one thing to consider is they are not all exactly the same green. Much like the soft 'umies they have a wide range of skin color. To add some variety to your skin tones try basing with yellow then green washing. or blue. dark tan, even brown white, light blue, dark yellow, light yellow, and so on. base skin tone of those washed green will still be green... but in many many many varying tones. It really adds a pop to your amy

EDIT: by basing I mean basing the skin parts not the entire model

One more thing,

http://www.3t-studios.com/archives/category/product-reviews

Thats a link to their product review. That gives you a pretty good idea what paints you want to look for and which to avoid. I personally use mostly Citadel and Vallejo game colour. They are more costly but the high pigment count means you can make washes of them much easier than the craft acrylics.

Since you are building terrain you may want to look over the entire site in the link. they are pro terrain builders and have inspired me on many occasions. They even have a DIY section for basic stuff and if you look threw their project logs you are very likely to pick up some tips on how to paint your buildings

Thanks Keltikhoa, I'll check out the site.

If I were to build up armies, Orks and Chaos marines would be at the top of the list (and possibly daemons). Hooray allies!!! I'm anxious to see what the next starter pack brings. I have 2 years of college left, so money will be tight for a while, and these starter packs are golden.

I received a pack of 32 different paint colors for my birthday, so I'm experimenting with those. There are 4 shades of green, so having different skin colored Orks is easy. Also I find adding different darknesses of a black wash-base to help. Ill try out more bases soon. I've included in pics The first 4 semi-done models (still WIP though)

The last 2 pics are my first Space marine/Chaos traitor. I definitely didn't make it Nurgley-enough to be a plague marine so he'll go into a squad of chosen (and I'll change his backpack later). i did scratch off any imperial insignia though. I plan to take seven marines and make them so nurgley and plague-y that no one notices I kept the backpacks the same.

After seeing this thread though, I am very tempted to paint my marines black/white/blue:

lol I know what you mean about the troncrons, they are beautiful. not sure the scheme would work out for marines as well but by all means give it a shot if you think you can pull it off

I did a quick paint job of the marine. I didn't feel like stripping it, so I painted over an old paintjob with old paint, so it looks a little goopy (except the axe). I also wasn't sure how to handle the shoulder pads.

i stand corrected that scheme works on the the marine pretty well. The shoulders i would suggest going both black and use the white on smaller places. on the crons its highlight and very small flat spots so the shoulderpad white is a bit overpowering. maybe like white exhaust ports on the backpack and the small piece of his glove that extends over the arm?

Ohh just noticed your earlier post with the white marine would give a great pattern... wherever is white on that guy go black and wherever is green put white

2 week update! I have been busy with school, but have done a few things. Made the beige marine more 'plaguey' with a growth from his mouthpiece, painted another plague marine. Now I have a predicament: which paint job to use for for the next 4 plague marines, I'm quite torn between the 3.

I also painted a termi and 2 more marines.

I like that obliterator! My opinion tthough would be to take that belt for The heavey bolter and put it back into to the body. Looks a but weird curved like that just a suggestion though ! Really nice work

Epic 3 month bump. Worked on the commander, dread, and obliterator alot. Also learning how to base correctly.

I want to change the dreadnaughts face to look a little more like its 'part' of the model, but im not sure exactly what to do. I think I will make it mostly black, with gray and white highlights, and the insides (eyes and mouth) Ill wash in teal.

Any feedback is always welcome!

The units look good and those terrain pieces are a good start. I'd like to see some shots of the units in the ruins once they're done.
