So, im wanting to build an Eldar/Dark Eldar ADL. Im thinking making the walls look like force fields, and glue a bunch of disintegrators together for a quad gun in the middle. The problem im having is i cant quite decide on what to use for the force fields! I was thinking of plexiglass, but its hard to work with, what else is out there thats a good study clear(ish) material to use? I can stain it if its clear of course, im just stumped on where to go on from there.

I seen some amazing conversions with 'half a flying base'... Makes a nice semi-circle.

that sounds nifty, but my goal was to have rectangular forceshields between two pylons, giving that crucial LOS for jerks who wont go the other way on a half circle, also, so they are the exact size of the actual walls on the ADL

Could always go with clear curing resin and use Legos as a box mold to make it the right height and depth.

Wow - this is very similar to an idea I had (of course, not playing Eldar Im never going to get around to it). However, I thought that TicTac boxes would be perfect - thin, sturdy and capable of being cut/ground down to shape as required (with effort & tools).

They also have a range of colours for your various schemes.

Finally, they are moderately cheap, and you get sweet sweet candy as a side benefit.

Anyway, very interested in what you come up with!

Cheers

You sir, are a genius! Im not really playing my DE atm, i just dont want to pay full price for an ADL! I think you solved my problem. I dont play Tyranids either, but i thought it would be fun to use foam to make some bubbly melty walls and make a quad "gun" that looked like a Starcraft spore tower

Glad I could help

I actually had a whole plan - this is the concept diagram
The sides would be designed/based off the top of Eldrad's helmet

But as a Chaos player, Im going to work on a Chaos Defense line instead (once I have my workspace in the shed figured out).

Best of luck!

That guy did something similar. Looks like its cut foam core/insulating foam and painted clear plastic.

I see you're not keen on the flying base route, but I went this way and I thik it works rather well. By using different sizes of base you can even get different heights that are an ok-ish match to the crenellations on the normal aegis line.

I hope the following might be of some use for reference:

While it isn't clear, I have to put a good word in for Illusion Sheets:

http://www.creativefilms.co.uk/beta/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=21&Itemid=13

They're available at a number of craft stores, they look awesome, they're easy to use and they give a really good, techy kind of look for things like forcefields, warp gates, weird portals and such. Just thought it might be an interesting alternate idea... though I have to admit, not as easy to come by as tic-tac boxes (genius idea with those... )

I made mine out of the disks they put in a spool to protect the actual CD/DVDs. They're clear, but have a little bit of a purple sheen to them. I just cut them in half. I'm working on a different frame (making a mold tonight and hopefully casting as well).

Some cool warpgate/chaos gates could be made with those as well.

If you plan on making a lot of these. I would use clear resin and paint the pieces that need the paint, that way you leave the shield clear.. You could mask it off to prime as well.. But they look awesome..

The parts are basically just standing together right now. I tried casting the non-transparent parts last night but it didn't work. It's just easier/stronger to use plasticard. I'm going to base-coat them this weekend and (hopefully) paint next week.

If they are just plasticard and CD spacers, would you mind sharing the templates so we could make our own ?

I'd recommend spraying some pearlescant powder over the clear to really give it that awesome gossamer effect but still leaving it translucent.

Something called "Amazing Sculpt". It's a lot cheaper than other sculpting putty and slightly more durable, but I prefer GS. For this though, since all I'll be casting/sculpting now is the thick base in the center of each panel, I'll continue using the AS.

This is what I came up with:

Is that a hobby specific thing? Where can I get it?

It's used a lot in automotive paints, which is the only way I've ever bought it. I think it would probably clog an airbrush if you tried to run it through do to the size of the pigment. I've seen other people on this board talk about getting an edible version as a baking supply (sprayed onto wedding cakes and stuff to make them look more elegant or whatever" and I imagine that's much finer.

Wow, these are cool.

I do recommend you get these as close as possible to the scale (height/length/width) of the actual ADL.

@AngelGrinder: how did you paint the screens? I like.

Here's mine with a rough coat of paint. I need to plate the center blobs and add some definition, but it's a rough idea of what the final would look like. I'm still trying to figure out the small sections.
