Just started painting some Pre-Heresy Ultramarines, Would you say it's too dark?

I don't think so, but I use the 3 foot rule when I paint my figures. That is, a little brighter than normal so they are identifiable at three feet. Small figures look darker at this range.

That said, if we're being picky, your figure looks ok for an Ultramarine, a shade darker though and you're in Crimson Fist territory imho.

As long as the ultramarines logo appears on tanks in your army, nobody will confuse them with fists.

I like it, When I did UM I always painted them darker, the characters in Regal Blue etc..

I think it looks pretty good. And I wouldn't worry about getting mistaken for anything else. Stick a logo or two on to be safe. I like the darker look though, much better than the classic 2nd edition era ultramarines.

Just be careful with the decals. I don't know if you're experienced with them but I just recently nearly ruined a good squad of Ultramarines with poorly done decals. (see gallery)
