Subject: IG Lascannon Team - Nearly done with my first half decent model, need feedback

Looking for feedback in general. I still need to get the spotter in there, but I plan on trying to do some pinning shenanigans to be able to pull him out if they take a wound. I'd like to clean up the muddy stuff near the back leg, I had to goop it up with filler to make it actually rest on the base correctly and repainted it weird. I might throw some grass on it and be done with it, but that might look a little 'convenient'. I dunno.

Nice! Really like the hashmarks on the shoulder pauldron. Kill marks? Great detail!

Exactly.

That's one thing I was afraid of actually. I really love the cool gray, but am open to suggestions on how to avoid the strange unpainted feel. It's VGC Somber Gray right now, lined with Wolf Gray.

Good job. If the grey is bothering you use some more highlights (an even lighter grey) on the grey edges and the definition will pop right out. I like the mud on the stand and battery.

I'm wondering about trying to do some highlighting on the curved area of the muzzle barrel. It's something I'm terrible at, but I need to learn how to do better. I should've also lined the top behind the big shield thing, I think, yeah.
The beauty of IG is I get to try again... and again... and again... and again... and again... and again... and then I might have a 500 point army.

That really looks good so far, but mabey you should try and add some shadings or highlights to the grey to prevent it from looking too flat. Also perhaps some more touches on the power cable between the gun and the battery.

I'm pretty happy with the power cable, but I'm open to ideas. What did you have in mind?
I do agree on the flatness. I'll have to experiment a little more on the next one in the squad. Not sure how I'm going to accomplish it yet, though. The back part of the casing is basically /¯\, maybe on the top I can do a lighter shade and go progressively darker down the sides? This is something I'm not very good at, and could really use advice on!

Well i was thinking more along the lines of a few washes to give it a bit more depth to it, or something more advanced would be painting it to make it look like you see a small surge of energy going from the battery and up to the gun as if the gun is charging up for a shoot.

Well huh. That'd be neat. Hard to pull off, though. Sticking a glowy surge thing somewhere near the top might be cool, I'll play around with that. Worst case I can at least add a highlight near the top to give it a little more depth. It's currently washed once, I'm not sure if I'd want to darken it any further, but duly noted. Thanks!

It looks nice. And i quite like the color scheme of the base and the small red details next to the other more dull colors.
But i have to agree that the larger surfaces need more depth. Beside highlighting and shading you could try to add some battledamage. Just some painted metal scratches and wear and tear on the edges of the grey areas.
And i would probably darken the recesses on his clothes a little bit more. Just paint the wash directly into them and so you'll only darken the shadows there.
Additionally i would add a glow to the power cable just like SneakyMek suggested. Just highlight it a little bit with orange. This will increase the contrast between the dull and the red even more.
And if you still feel that you want to add more, put some shine to his shades. Something like this: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.de/2010/11/painting-space-marine-helmet-lenses.html.
It's ment for space marine lenses but it would probably work with the shades too.

I've been meaning to try some battle damage stuff on my upcoming tanks, that's actually an excellent idea to try it here. I hadn't thought to put some nice scrapes on anything short of a vehicle, but I think that's definitely worth a shot now that you mention it.
That link is awesomely helpful too, thanks! I've been wondering how that effect's been pulled off. I wouldn't mind taking some extra time on it to try getting that glint.

What looks pretty in my head. Nothing more than that right now. The fact that I have a SW codex sitting next to my IG probably had something to do with it. I can't get enough of the cool gray, and I didn't want standard cadian green, so I figured I'd give it a go and I'm liking the result so far.

I'm keeping the scheme as I personally like it, but am open to ideas to give it a little more depth.

If you want to keep the grey armor, I'd start by toning the highlights WAY down, and perhaps washing it a couple more times. As for the clothing, the model would look a lot better if you came up for a camo scheme for it.

Duly noted. I don't have the brighter lines on my rank and file, I thought I'd spruce him up a bit though. I'm not sure if washing the armor would do much. What sort of effect do you think it needs?
I'm not sure how to do camo on cloth, but I'll look into it as an urban pattern would probably fit in well. I'm also not sure if I can honestly say I'll be up for doing a camo pattern on every single trooper if it's remotely complicated. I'm up for being ambitious, but I need SOME practical concerns...
