Hi all,

I'm currently doing a radical ordo xenos inquisitorial force, thereby henchmen will be the bulk of the army....

Was wondering if I could get some advice from some of the wiser heads on the forums here, regarding leg bits - that appear "armoured" - that are scaled accordingly to imperial guardsmen, and of course, where to obtain some??

To illustrate what I'm trying to acquire, envision a techpriest enginseer's legs (as opposed to a cadian/catachan/any other IG legs, where they are "clothed" i.e. just basically a dude wearing some army trunks)

I've relatively new to the hobby, but I've extensively searched the GW range. Oddly, the thing that comes closest to what I'm after (apart from the enginseer legs themselves, which is way too expensive, as I intend most of my troops to have these legs) are "Chaos Chosen Command" legs from fantasy range- which aren't that much better than enginseer legs, weighing in at $14.40 (Australian $'s) each....

Tau fire warrior and eldar legs are surprisingly off scale, as they are more sleeker...

So are there any models from NON-GW ranges (obviously preferably plastic/resin for conversion) that would conform to my design? In essence, I guess I'm asking for "power armoured legs" for imperial guardsmen models....!

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Pig Iron has these legs, but they're not as armored as you're asking for.

Just short of trimming down SM legs (just using the greaves maybe), nothing comes to mind. However, look into some mechwarrior clicky mechanic. Or for an armoured leg look I can suggest Defiance games UAMC Marines:

Depending on the specific look you are after (you mentioned the Techpriest - but that still leaves a lot of wiggle room) - you can actually do a press mold and then mold the plates onto the existing guard legs. A bit of clean up on the putty when you smoosh it in place and then move onto the next one.

I've used that method for a lot of different figures when you are adding things like armor to them.

If you would rather go with something off the shelf - you might want to take a look at historical miniatures. Several companies use proportions which are comparable to guardsmen - and a few are even in plastic. I would need to double check to see if anyone does plate on foot in plastic though. Fireforge is the first to jump to my mind for the proper period - though I haven't seen them in person so I don't know how they compare size wise or if they are plate legs or something else.

Plenty of choices in metal though - and generally historical prices are low enough that you don't even have to shed a tear to chop them in half and toss one side into the recycle bin.

The chaos warriors are bigger IIRC than the guardsmen - and that may prove to be problematic when attempting to match the top to the bottom.

Big Iron actually are good matches for the size - but don't really have the style that fits with the techpriest you mentioned. That doesn't mean they won't work, but it isn't quite what you asked for.

BTW - Tau also have an entirely different foot than what you would find on a guardsman. Granted, without knowing what you are actually doing...it is hard to really provide a whole lot of guidance on that issue.

I have never used this website, I just have it bookmarked for future conversion ideas. It may help and it says that they are compatible with 28mm 'heroic' models which iirc is what 40k is.

Those Anvil legs are for Space Marines. They would be way to huge for guardsmen.

You can see some good pictures of the sprues and legs there, as well as comparison shots of the completed model with IG and SM. They should be publicly available from Wargames Factory in a couple months.

I think armoured WHFB legs (e.g. knights on foot) might give you the proportions and look you want.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of the ground sloggers who aren't freaks have armored legs. The various Empire figures are all unarmored. The Bretonnian Men-at-Arms figures have a couple armored legs in the box - but the majority of them are wearing boots and the like (though to be honest - I don't even know for certain if any of them are armored). There might be some singles which are armored on foot and the right size...but they would likely be $20 or so each (or nearly so).

Chaos fantasy figures, like the Chaos Chosen Command are closer to the size of a Space Marine from my memory (which is a bit too large for an IG torso).

Here is a converted storm trooper I am currently working on. It isn't the best picture to see it, but I did use Tau fire warrior legs and they worked out well.

Thanks for or the replies guys!

Celticwelsh... wow, would totally fit what Im tring to do (and I have a bunch of fire warriors)! So I shall try to emulate that,,,

Would you (or anyone else who knows how to) be able to give me a quick run through on how you covered up those tau feet?
Is it as simple as just sculpting with GS?

Once again, much appreciated!

N.B. thanks to tannhauser42 for recommending the Dreamforge legs... I would totally order it, as it also would be fitting towards the whole "armoured leg" idea... the only problem is that when I went to the website, there doesn't seem to be a "add to shopping cart" option.... lol

Frankly, I'm a bit dismayed at the utter lack of options here...

I mean, consider this.... The Year is 40k.... Do you think that our military would be running around in trunks that armies today wear??

I dont know, just my 2 cents... Does anyone else find this odd/annoying, or does this concept of "body armour" (think halo!) not appeal?

Looks like he snipped them just below the knee and glued the legs onto Cadian boots. Shouldn't be too tricky, probably don't even need GS if you're careful with your cutting/filing.

Well you got spehhhss mahreeens, but they're more like Spartans or whatever them big guys are called. Fluffwise IG is just your regular grunts, get them in the millions cause all you need it toss them a rifle and helmet (if you even bother with the latter). IG does have vets with carapace armor, once you get to complete coverage though it's powerarmor. Considering that you need a power system to lug around heavy armor plating it does make sense that the grunts don't wear much. Halo body armor the regular infantry has would probably be equal to carapace armor.

See - now that is a bit different. The techpriest armor is more archaic looking. Bit like medieval plate with some hydraulics stuck on it.

For Halo, Pig-Iron's System Troopers are along those lines - though in the goofy chibi scale (so you have to squint real hard to see it...or have a few pints).

The Dreamforge stuff isn't available yet - few months time...though, I wouldn't attempt to make plans around the release schedule (lots of variables between the tooling and shipping that are outside of their control).

Back to Halo...there is this:

Johnno is spot on. All I did was find two legs with approximately the same pose then snipped right above the guard boot and right below the fire warrior knee pad then glue. No green stuff required. The only ones I have problems with are the crouching legs which I am just ignoring.

Cool. thanks for the conversion advice^

I was actually warming up to the dreamforge models, the Eisenkern Troopers, or specifically, their "heavy trooper" range:

Those legs are perfect! And they would be a an appropriate scale, since it has the same height as the regular troop on the right (and of course, the regular trooper on the right is scaled to guardsmen)

I just dont understand.... why are they adverstising the price and all (for shipping too!), but they are not for sale?? Look!!:

arrrghh... is it really that hard to find some armoured legs? maybe i should tell the guys at anvil or puppets war to come with a new line for IG scaled Halo-type legs!

(thanks for the Halo links... It just shows the models, but doesnt say where I can obtain the legs, or at the very least, explain how to convert/sculpt them)

They were done on kickstarter - the people that funded it will get their stormtroopers in about a month. After that, they'll start to be purchasable retail.

Yes, they are awesome ; ) I have 60 on the way, along with lots of other dreamforge goodies.
