Subject: Waaaaghlord's P+M blog. Weirdboy and Daemon Prince preview, update 31/01

So my Eldar project is on hold, since I'm waiting for the new codex. Everyone has stopped playing WM/H at our local store, so I have no reason to get my Cryx done yet. I still have my Chaos Grotz to work on, but I'm waiting on parts I ordered in November which still haven't turned up.
However, as an early christmas present, my mum picked up the Hobbit "Escape From Goblin Town" box, as I'd expressed and interest in it, and didn't stop talking about the film for days after I'd seen it. I didn't really want to start a new game, however, I really like the Goblin minis from the box. They're tiny, warty, ugly, and extremely creepy. So I did what any self respecting hobbyist would do, and taking inspiration from classic games such as Doom, Contra, Castlevania etc etc, ripped open the box, hacked up the Goblins, and turned them into a myriad of twisted shapes which eventually became the Horrors you see in this blog. The guy with the Goblin head represents my Bolt Of Change guy. He has kinda psychadelic snake eyes, but I'm not sure it shows up very well in the pictures...
I've always wanted to do a pure Tzeentch army, but have never really liked the Horror miniatures, old or new, so I saw this as a chance to run that fluffy army, without using models I really hate. I've also had about 12 Flamers of Tzeentch lying around for a good while, so I decided on an arm swap to make them more suited to the rest of the minis in the list. Genestealer Rending Claws made for a suitable transplant, giving them more of a dangerous "spit fire at you, then rip your eyes out" kinda vibe.
Three units of those will be running with a Herald on a Disk each. Each Herald will be converted heavily, as per this first one made from the WHFB Vampire Counts Necromancer, a model I've always liked but never found a use for. A flying base and a load of plasticard became his steed, and with the addition of a Brazier from the Corpse Cart kit, he was complete.
I'm planning to use this army in a 400pts combat patrol's tournament at my local store in late January, so with a month to go I should have enough time to paint the last unit of 6 Horrors for my intended list, play a few test games and make any changes I need to.
Any C+C would be appreciated! Cheers Dakka, and Merry Christmas!

Much appreciated sir, glad they're to your liking!
Nearly finished the 2nd squad of Horrors, and therefore my 400pts 40k in 40 Minutess list for a tournament I'm attending at the end of January, just in time for a few test games! Will post pictures tomorrow.

Okay, so after a Boxing Day's hard toil on another batch of minis, I now have a teeny tiny 500pts army ready to roll.
I completed my second unit of Horrors necessary for the list. Again, the guy with the Goblin head is a Bolt Of Tzeentch guy.
And this is my Masque counts as. the idea behind her, game wise at least, is to usher enemy units closer together in order to blast more guys with the Breath of Chaos from the Tzeentch Heralds and Flamers. At least, that's the plan...
Again, some C+C would be appreciated. I'm back in work tomorrow, but I'm off to play some test games after work against CSM and Imperial Guard, which should be interesting. I'll let you guys know how I get on, and will update at weekend once I get some more painting done!
Cheers, Joe

Big fan of your painting style
Is the necromancer aloft and do you have a photo showing it?
Also, did you do some highlights on the necromancer's clothing? I can't tell if is paint or actual light.
Nice touch with the genestealer claws. They make the models look much more menacing.
The only C&C is try playing with the exposure level of the photos. They are a bit dark.

Thanks a lot man!
He is indeed, and I'll take a picture of his base when I get the chance! They are highlights on his cloak, I'll try to get some pictures in natural light tomorrow so it'll be easier to see. That should solve the exposure problem too!
Cheers again, mate!

Cheers fella, much obliged!
So I played my first three games tonight, at 400pts.
First two games, vs a ridiculously sized IG army were a little hit and miss. First game, my favoured wave (Flamers w/ Herald on disk attached, and a unit of 5 horrors) didn't turn up, leaving me with 6 Horrors to slog it out until the other units turned up. I ran with it thinking my 4++ would save me. I got taken down to a man on the first turn. In my second turn I failed both of my reserves rolls (unlucky I know), leaving me tabled on turn 2. Second game, my favoured wave turned up at the right time, and all but decimated the guard army in 3 turns due to some convenient scattering and well placed flamer templates. Also partially due to being able to fire at two separate units due to We Are Legion and Master Of Sorcery on the herald.
The last game, VS Eldar was pretty close fought in the end. My favoured wave failed to turn up, so I hid the 6 horrors behind some terrain until the necessary reinforcements showed. Both units turned up turn two, and the Flamers and Herald kicked off in spectacular fashion by glancing 2 of a unit of 3 war walkers to death. The combined power of the two horror units cut down half a squad of Guardians, including, luckily, the attached Warlock. In some ridiculously lucky assault rolls, the remaining Guardians got into assault range of my Flamers and Herald, which resulted in them being tied up in combat for at least 3 turns, leaving the Horrors to deal with the last remaining War Walker. I eventually ended up tabling the guy with some lucky rolls toward the end of turn 5. Phew!
So, lessons learned:
If my favoured wave fails to turn up, the Horrors are to cower in fear and wait for their mates.
Don't get the Herald and Flamers into combat. If they fluff their Overwatch wall of flamey changey death, they're pretty much useless.
NEVER count on a 4++ save to get you by when you need it...
Okay, so the next step is to get the army up to 1000pts for a tournament early February. I'll mostly be painting and converting 6 more Flamers and two more Heralds, along with a further 11 Horrors to bring my count up to 2 units of 8 Horrors, and a unit of 7 for my 1k list.
I also want to play some 500pts combat patrol games, just to see how well the Masque works in conjunction with my current list. More pictures and developments soon!
Cheers, Joe

Based on my experience playing against the Daemon army at my FLGS, 2 units of 9 flamers can pretty much waste any army out there. 3 units of 9 with a couple of FMC princes and you'll likely table every opponent.
I've tried everything I can think of with my IG and even GK allies and just can't stop them.

They are a difficult army to play against, if unpredictable. They're also a hard army to wield, you have to play bravely and hedge your bets a bit to get the best out of them. I've seen a guy lose turn one due to all his first wave scattering off the board/into terrain and miniatures. Wasn't a good day for that guy.
So, a quick late night update! I've started working on an ally force for these Daemons, which may well develop into a fully fledged force of it's own eventually. And who better to ally with my gribbly Daemon menagerie than those raving Chaos nutters, the Word Bearers? I picked up the Dark Apostle mini and started converting him into a Lord for this list. I got this far in a hour and a half's sitting:
And here's a close up of the face. Needs some touching up but I'm pretty proud of the whole corpse paint thing, something I might duplicate on my Champions and other characters:
C+C would be nice!
Cheers

Thanks very much sir! Comments like this are such a massive boost, thanks to everyone who's commented!
So I put in another hour or so on my Word Bearer today and have got this far:
This picture is a little dark, and mildly out of focus but I don't really have time to take another before bed, but you get the gist of it!
This is what I'm really proud of anyway, luckily it's in focus and the right colours too.
Want to paint more parchment/scrollwork not, does anyone have any good tutorials to GS some for my regular CSM's?
Some C+C would be nice, and I hope you all have a happy new year, as it's unlikely I'll post tomorrow!

Thank you sir! It's a real nice model, just a shame it was never in metal. Finecost really doesn't do it justice, mine needed so much repair work, and the fact that the weapon was almost unrecognisable was the main reason for the weapon swap, although I was toying with doing one anyway!
So I started converting up some 'Bearers Marines, the plan is for every model in the Word Bearers contingent to be utterly covered in scrolls and parchment a la the Dark Apostle mini. After some deliberation, and much snooping, I found that plastic storecards were to be the answer. Having worked for the past 3 months in retail, I found these to be readily available after cash up every day thank you to an understanding manager (who plays Dark Eldar, no less...)
So, after chopping the cards up into long strips, heat is applied with a lighter (not health and safety conscious but hey ho), and they're bent into interesting shapes to go with the general movement of the model. See for yourself! First up, bolter marines:
And two plasma marines, because Plasma is smokin' hot (no pun intended) in 6th:
And a banner guy. Lots of parchment, gangsta gunfire...
And a champion, reading a sermon from a little book in a massive claw, adding some mild comic relief...
Book donated kindly by my FLGS owner, who plays Grey Knights and has banner tops in abundance.
And all together:
So I'm playing more test games tomorrow, will post a short synopsis, and any progress in an update tomorrow!
Cheers,
Joe

No bites? Thats cool, plenty more where that came from!
So I played a few games today, first two vs the same space wolf player running a Long Fangs pack with 5 missile launchers, a Hunter squad and a WGBL on a Thunderwolf. First game, due to some unlucky rolling, I got utterly owned due to doing only 3 wounds out of 17 with the Flamers and Herald first turn. From there it was a slow slog in combat to death. Second game I made up for it, tabling the guy by turn 4.
Third game was against a horde Ork army, and the numbers proved too much. The guy tabled me. I don't like facing flamer templates myself, turns out. Burnas are pretty cool...
The final game of the night was against another SW player taking a totally different approach. He had two units of Hunters packed with plasma, and a Rune Priest with JOTWW. PRetty close game, and it all came down to the Herald vs the priest with 1 wound left. It all turned out okay in the end though, phew!
I also got some painting done, and got a single marine done from start to finish.
And the pennants...
I'm liking how quick these are to paint, should have my basic units knocked out in no time, so I can move on to cooler things...
Some C+C would be nice, mainly on the colour scheme. I'm hoping to get a couple more guys done in the next few days. Progress may be slow however, as I have a Warmahordes tournament to run in a few weeks that I need to prepare for...
Cheers.

Also, going to pick up a Dreadnought to convert up for this force sometime this week as a gift from a friend. Obviously with the Chaos codex, I'm going to have to use him as a Helbrute, but fingers crossed he'll look cool anyway!

Okay so I managed to get my first two Marines painted. I have some spare time at the weekend so I hope to get the whole unit boxed off so I can start painting some more Daemons the week after. I have a 1k tournament to run at the start of February so I'm thinking of painting up a Daemon list in case we need a ringer in the event of an odd number of players. We'll see how that turns out haha!
So, let me know what you think of my first two marines! Cheers,
