Rough Rider with Boomstick
|
Hello all, this is my most recent possible project: an army of IG based on the British army during the Napoleonic Wars. here's what my current design looks like:
I think they look pretty good, but they are my work. so I'd like to know what you all think. I don't want to dive head first into this project before I have a good idea of what the basic design should be. so should I change my design or is this current one working?

actually that's the Company Commander, and is it the fact that you can't see his neck that's wrong, or is it something else?

Looking good! They are victrix I presume? The only problem, who h cannot be helped, is that the bodies are too small for the arms. I would love to see more of this army, as I am thinking of starting one myself.
keep up the good work!

Arms are a different scale than bodies. It looks a bit odd. Can you use the original arms and Cadian weapons?

I agree the arms are off. These are Victrix models correct? Have you tried the Perry plastics? I think they are a tad larger but I think you still run into the issue of the gorilla arms. I think you may be better off looking to replace the rifle with somethhing rather than the entire arms.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow, because honestly the lasmusket troops after close examination don't really pass muster as being from the 40k universe. I'll also get to work on writing some fluff for these guys, maybe have a proper blog going sometime tomorrow.

I like the look of those!
The only thing I think doesn't work is the head on the sergeant, the cap just looks wrong.
Maybe some space wolves heads instead? Some of them have epic beards and would fit the Napoleonic theme well, this sort of thing:
I used one for a sergeant and after a bit of filing they look great

Well actually the cap is not supposed to fit with the theme, that particular guy is an off-worlder. He brought the cap with him when he joined the unit.

I prefer the Las-musket soldier.
It's also less work and cost than finding a load of replacement arms and weapons. You can probably very easily make the "las" muzzle brake from plastic tube.
If you are worried about special weapons, you can look at anyone else's spare weapon parts. The bulk of the army will be non- GW anyway, so you don't need to be too picky about the special weapons as long as they are consistent in themselves.
The Hasslefree site has a whole bunch of SF weapon designs.

Paulson Games does some weapons too.

Alright some of you wanted to see what they would look like painted, so here's the color test model:
does that make the arms better?

Edit: the models I suggested were 54 mm. Sorry. As for heavy weapons, simply fit Lascannons and autocannons would fit perfectly onto a standard gun carriage from the napoleonic wars (by perfectly, I mean it'd look fitting.) Mount Lascannon's on 12-16lb carriages and autocannons onto 6-10lb carriages. Heavy bolters, have a look for something called the 'gatling gun'. It's a little different, from the Shogunate wars (well, we all remember the Last Samurai, don't we?) Mortars are relatively easy. Use models for french bombards / howitzers. Another edit: http://www.perry-miniatures.com/ Perry miniatures are a company that produce 28mm, and you can be reassured by the fact that the two big heads there (The perry brothers, I think they're called.) actually sculpted a lot for GW (I believe they did most of the LotR stuff. ) http://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=1970 Perfect, right? You can thank me later.

On a single model basis it's a noticable thing for the arm size. However an army of them on the table will go either 1 of 2 ways. 1) your opponent won't notice because the whole army looks the same and is very impressive on the table from playing distance away. Or 2) Your opponent will notice and the larger arms and ask you about it and you answer. And in the hopeful case it will be during a game and it will distract your opponent so much that they cannot counter your army and you waltz over his 16 model GK force.
I do like it painted up. It blends a bit easier but for the trained eye it's still there.

GW is closest to 28mm.
That said, the entire thing is out of proportion. Somehow, a SM inside the Rhino model takes up about a sixth of the space, but the model can fit 10 guys in it (somehow).
Or how a LR can somehow seat (yes, there are seats for them) 8 guys in dreadnought armour.
Point is, I know. I just gave him his best option.
What he could look at doing is finding some 30mm models, although even 28mm is not a very good scale.

GW figures are the height of 28mm (1/56th scale) but the heads, hands and torsos are more like 1/35th scale, while the weapons are about 1/16th or larger.

and I already have a semi silly answer to that question ready: they're an army of Abhuman Longshanks (check the list of abhumans, everyone was so focused on the felinids that no one seems to notice them ) I figure that will throw them off for a bit and put them off their game. but for a serious answer: in the fluff they've been isolated by a warp storm and some mutations may have developed (ie: one of the characters has yellow eyes, and the royalty have purple eyes (but then again they are descended from a cadian) and given that they have had a cold climate to adapt to they may have evolved along the same line as neanderthals (short and stocky with out of proportional arms))
EDIT: hey all I've set up a proper blog for these guys over in the P&M section: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/497035.page

i'm doing an IG army similar to yours using the victix models, but I kept the regular muskets and sabres as they were. The scale works well if your allied with SM but i wouldnt take chimera's as the scale difference makes it look like a super heavy :/ And quite a lot of IG regiments have been raised with juskets according to the codex. (says so in the scriptures, so it does sar)
