Evening ! My first post and I wanted to show what I'd been working on as I'd robbed so many ideas from you lot in the past !
A bit of background , I'm mostly into the modelling /painting side of the hobby , my son does the gaming .
I've always loved the WW11 German Sturmgeshutz and Jadg series of vehicles and thought the Vindicator should reflect the design more. Through a whole series of happy coincidences I ended up with some Leman Russ's from ebay , I hate the design and was going to make them into scenery untill i realised how similar to LandRaiders they were backwards.
So I decided to make MiniRaiders or SturmRuss's or SturmRaiders , whatever , I'd like to hear you comments for improvements etc.
[Thumb - DSCF0871.JPG]
The parts after being in brake fluid , which mostly loosened all the glued joints too !

[Thumb - DSCF0872.JPG]
The vindicator front is roughly similar width to the Leman body but some superstructure need to be built with plasticard , I filled gaps with Miliput.

[Thumb - DSCF0873.JPG]
I used dreadnought exhausts as they are vaguely similar to LR ones , tying in the theme of Mini Raiders.

[Thumb - DSCF0874.JPG]

[Thumb - DSCF0875.JPG]
I used pics of WW11 tanks for reference on track stowage etc .

[Thumb - DSCF0876.JPG]
This "SturmRaider" is a bit further along , barrel is from a biro fitted with the Russ muzzle brake.

[Thumb - DSCF0878.JPG]

[Thumb - DSCF0879.JPG]
Once the sponsons are done I think I'll fit a cupola gun with a shield , possibly a plasma gun or heavy bolter. Thoughts ?

[Thumb - DSCF0880.JPG]
Vindicator main gun . The longer barrel is a snug fit and slides in and out as necessary , might magnetise this part so I can fit a gatling gun type weapon.

Thanks mate !

I'm really happy with how they're turning out , I'm not 100% on the sponsons tho. Have to see how they look painted and maybe make some more !

That looks AWESOME dude, I so want to steal that!

That would make a great looking Destroyer Tank Hunter or counts-as Vanquisher IMO, I don't think it "looks" like it fits the Vindicator role... Great job with the conversion though!

Steal away old boy !

In my mind I see it as being similar to the Sturmgeshutz 3 of WW2 , which where of course tank destroyers and assault guns , converted from obsolete tanks and fitted with more powerful guns that required the turret removing to cope with the recoil.

I'm not sure where it fits game wise , my boy plays I paint , but as we are all Space Marines at the minute , I'm hoping it will be used as a "counts as" Predator or something ......

Yours is one of the few "backwards russ" that I have seen that actually looks well executed. nice, keep up the good work.

if you want to add a third heavy bolter as a turret, otherwise it would make a cool vindicator or laser destroyer with out the sponsons.

Thanks mate , like as not it still wouldn't make it up a descent sized curb , but thats another story altogether !

I'm begining to wish I'd magnetised EVERYTHING so it could be all things as and when needed. I'll have to try that with the others.

First of all HOLY

I have seen some conversions in my short time around this hobby, but this by far one of my favorite (i have a thing for all things WWII), its creative and looks like it would fit into the IP like skulls made into a throne!

There is a company out there that to these massive vindicator barrels might go with this project of yours i will look it up and post the link!

Once again this is awesome!

Got a few more bits done on the "SturmRaiders"
[Thumb - IMG_0062.jpg]
I broke the already broken tow cable on these ebay wonders , so with some fuse wire and a pinvice set about making my own.

[Thumb - IMG_0063.jpg]

[Thumb - IMG_0066.jpg]
Some plasticard needed cutting to fill a small gap at the top of each sponson , it probably could do with rivets to keep with the look, why does no one in the 41st millenium weld ?

[Thumb - IMG_0067.jpg]
Decided to make some simple heavy bolter cupola's. The bolters will be positioned at the rear of the turret so the commanders can be posed in a "relaxed" way

[Thumb - IMG_0068.jpg]

[Thumb - IMG_0069.JPG]
Pretty much the finished articles minus crew , ready for paint.

[Thumb - IMG_0071.jpg]
I prime them lightly black first , paying most attention to the tracks / lower surfaces.

[Thumb - IMG_0073.jpg]
Next , a very fine mist of white issprayed on from above , only catching upper surfaces . Now we I come to spray my main colour it will already have the beginings of shading.

Had an hour or two today to myself so decided to crack on with the SturmRaiders.
[Thumb - IMG_0075.jpg]
So , whilst I'd got the compressor out I thought " May as well make a start on all that other stuff " I mean it makes sense once the paints mixed , the brush is dirty and whatnot ? Right ?

All the above were purchased from ebay , some were pretty good to start with others , like the Landspeeders were ALMOST complete write off's.
[Thumb - IMG_0076.jpg]
Started with a dark earth brown loosely sprayed into crevises , deep shade area to provide some depth.

Tonights work , thats enough for a bit , think I'll watch some telly.
[Thumb - IMG_0077.jpg]
I noticed too late glue blobs where the old smoke launchers had been , so scraped it smooth and fitted two new ones , you can just see the original blue paint underneath.

[Thumb - IMG_0078.jpg]
How they all look with 3 coats of progressively lighter Tamiya Desert Yellow. Camo stripes next.

[Thumb - IMG_0079.jpg]
Vallejo German Grey camo stripes , my airbrush has been a pain tonight , stripes are not quite as fine as I'd like leaving a bit of cleaning up here and there with a brush. Pin wash and weathering next.

[Thumb - IMG_0080.jpg]
SturmRaiders ready for weathering . My God , this lot may take a while !

the sloped front armor actually is more reminiscent of the Jagdpanthers but the Leman Russ blockiness is more older series Panzers in execution.

I agree , when the long barrels are fitted they do look quite a bit like Sturmgeshutz 3's.

I am really chuffed with all the comments fellas , I honestly never expected this kind of response.
If I were to make more should the sponsons stay ?
What about a gattling type weapon for the main gun ?
I could make one , possibly 2 more once I get all the others done . Comments please ! :-)

Not done much this weekend as I've been away. I decided to get a bit done on the SturmRaiders this evening unfortunately I got carried away with myself and forgot to highlight the top coat between the washes and applying some decals , might get away with a bit of dry brushing hopefully.
[Thumb - DSCF0905.JPG]
The barrels are still a good press fit and I think I'll leave them that way for variation of weapon fits.

[Thumb - DSCF0906.JPG]
I'm gonna fit the heavy bolters once I've worked out how to do my botched final highlight.

A couple of hours done tonight , managed to shade with the airbrush around the decals and apply some chips , a general clean up and highlight of the chips/scratches tomorrow.
Hopefully start the tracks tomorrow too.

Thanks mate , at the minute I'm getting VERY bored with highlighting paint chips and nothing is gonna happen tomorrow , but some of the infantry I did really fast can be found on Dakka " Camo Space Marines , surely not ...! "
These were done for my boy , in a fast and rough manner to get him playing , I'm hoping to get some squads together soon and paint with a bit of care !

Highlighting that many scratches back to back must be grueling indeed.
I saw your other post a couple of days ago - the marines are great! In fact, it gave me some inspiration for my next astartes army (if I can finish my CSM first).

I take the edge off with a bottle of wine and a comfy chair !

Cool , would love to see anything inspired from these ! I'm struggling to get enough time on the marines , never mind the Nurgle force waiting in its case , maybe have to put some pics of those up too.

Yup , that's them !

Mini Raiders or SturmRaiders as we now call them at our house.

I wonder what could be done with a Malcador or Baneblade chassis ?

Mostly, on my phone.

Very good indeed. What I think is most impressive is they look absolutely like "real" kits - as if you've just come by some new fw variant - rather than 'just' a kitbash. Seriously cool.
