Blood Angel Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

Hello all!

In April, there is a painting competition in Manchester, CT called Battle Cry. It is being put on by The Battle Standard and looks like there is going to be a great showing. More info can be found HERE (dakka post) and HERE (facebook page).

Anyway. I'm painting up an Ogre Firebelly for the Fantasy infantry/monster category (whatever category it fits in). I've never painted any ogres before and its been ages since I've painted a fantasy model. I'm also entering my Blood Angels Honour Guard squad that I've previously painted, and also hope to enter a converted Mephistan and forgeworld Death Company Dreadnought. We'll see how far I get in the next month and a half.

Here's the ogre so far. I meant to take pictures at each step, but a combination of being lazy and the camera battery being dead prevented me from doing that. So far, the skin is pretty much done. I've attempted to highlight it as if the main light source is the fire he is breathing. I am also going to attempt some OSL, so I will be adding a bit of color to the highest highlights of his skin that are close to the fire.

I went with a bit of an odd skin color, partially by mistake. I started with P3 Beast Hide, into P3 Thrall Flesh, then added P3 Morrow White for the highlights. I also used a mix of P3 Umbral Umber and P3 Beaten Purple for some shading. I've got to give GentleBen at BOLS credit for the pallet. It's tough to tell the exact color, but it's sort of a pale yellowish green; it looks much more brown on the computer.

As far as other colors, I'm not sure. I think most of the rest of the model will be darker, except for the fire obviously, to make the skin stand out a bit.

More updates in the next few days hopefully.

Criticism is very welcome. Thanks!

So a crazy two weeks at work plus a mini vacation don't leave much time for painting. I finally found a bit of time last night and started on the cloth wraps on his feet, arm, and staff. I decided to do a pale, grey-blue color for them instead of the normal light cloth/parchment color because I wanted them to stand out a bit more against his skin. I started with a base of GW Shadow Grey. I will be adding some P3 Thrall Flesh into it to lighten it similarly to adding a bleached bone color, but hopefully the Thrall Flesh will keep it a cooler color overall (as opposed to warm).

Here is with the first coat of GW Shadow Blue. At this point I realized I didn't paint his heels and I also found a hunk of flash I missed on his arm. I'm going to fix those before I go back to the cloth wraps.

Love the model. Will be following this with interest.

Thanks!

I was able to clean up the flash I missed on his shoulder and fixed his heels that I missed with flesh tone. I also put a layer on the cloth wraps and then one of the shade washes.

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish them off and block out some of the metal areas.

Slight update. I was able to finish off highlighting the cloth wraps on his ankles, arm, and staff (also on his knife).

Next step is probably going to be the rock and his mask.

Finally got some time to do some painting over the past couple days. I am now realizing how slow I paint :(

I undercoated black most of the areas that I'm going to paint either metal or gold. I also painted his stone hammer up from GW's Mechanicus Standard Grey through drybrushes of GW's Celestra Grey with a black wash in between.

Hopefully I'll have a chance to paint tomorrow morning too and get started on the different leathers.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Well, last night I was able to get some painting time in and did the leather and also finished basecoating the metal areas with black.

The dark leather is GW Scorched Brown highlighted with GW Bestial Brown. The medium leather is GW Bestial Brown highlighted with GW Jokaero Orange. The light leather is P3 Thrall Flesh highlighted with GW Bleached Bone.

All of the leather had two basecoats followed by a wash of GW Devlin Mud, a reapplication of the basecoat, followed by a 2:1 and then a 1:1 highlight of the base color and the highlight color.

Next up I think is the metal.

Thanks Jerp.

So, I was able to get some good painting time in this weekend and a day or two last week and the ogre is almost finished. I still have to do the hardest parts, his mask, fire and smoke. I also have to tidy up the small strings and ropes which shouldn't be bad.

The most obvious thing is that he is now all glued together. After finishing up his gut plate and sword, I glued them on.

I did the metal with GW Boltgun Metal, washed with black all over and brown in patches. The gold was done with a base of GW Scorched Brown and highlighted with GW Shining Gold. I did the big chitin with a mix of GW Scorched Brown and GW Screamer Pink to make it like a dark reddish color.

I did his little loincloth green because I envision this guy as part of the "Rotten Maw" tribe of ogres. They believe that they are worshiping an aspect of the Great Maw, but it's really Nurgle. That's also why his skin is so pale and yellowy.

I would love some comments and constructive criticism on the ogre.

I also recently bought a base for him from Scibor Miniatures. It's difficult to see in the picture below, but that is a large stone face. It's a pretty cool looking base and on the top of the stone slab is a bunch of carvings and there are some chaosy symbols as well.

I also bought one of the Sci-Fi Archangel models to use with my Blood Angels. The pictures don't do it justice, check it out on their site ... http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1464.

When I purchased both of those, Scibor also sent me a promotional Easter miniature. It's a sweet-looking dwarf in a bunny suit and goblin hiding in an egg. I'm going to try and paint this up for the competition also.

Thanks for looking.
