Boom! Leman Russ Commander

For my first foray into Guard, I've come up with this list, based upon the tactics as discussed in my other thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/507834.page#5325859

CCS = 80
Missile Launcher, Regimental Standard, Vox.
CCS = 85
Lascannon, Regimental Standard, Vox.

Vets = 140
Missile Launcher, 3 Melta Gun, Vox, Grenadiers.
Vets = 140
Missile Launcher, 3 Melta Gun, Vox, Grenadiers.
Vets = 145
Lascannon, 3 Melta Gun,Vox, Grenadiers.
Vets = 145
Lascannon, 3 Melta Gun, Vox, Grenadiers.

Leman Russ Exterminator = 245
Pask, Lascannon, 2 Heavy Bolters, Heavy Stubber.

As it stands, it's 980 points.

I have a Leman Russ Demolisher kit which I want to make into an Executioner, but I don't know whether to go with that or get two more Demolishers and go for 3 Demolishers in total to support the infantry on the move.

In short, I'm not sure which Tanks to go for to make it up to 1750 or 1850.

Any ideas?

First things first.

Make all those missiles lascannon, and dump the voxes. for only 5pts more lascannon are far superior to missiles, and voxes are in general not that good.

At 1750 or 1850 you'll need more boots on the ground so consider an infantry platoon with maybe 30 guys, just to add some more scoring bodies, and some extra special/heavy weapons.

The exterminator with Pask is good, and will murder your average tank. (won't do much to land raiders, but then what does...). Although the heavy stubber is fairly pointless-you'll be mostly shooting at vehicles that it can't harm.

Executioners can be very good, especially if you see a lot of deepstriking marines or similar. But then Demolishers are good too.

I would consider 1 executioner with plasma sponsons, and then a squadron of 2 demolishers without sponsons (due to the FAQ loss of lumbering behemoth).

Hope this is useful.

At 1850, I will be adding more boots, but I'm sticking to the Vets theme of the list.

In regards to the lascannons, I've found them to be good, but I was then lacking templates to combat horde.

Thanks for the assist.

To go with what Jangustus said, voxes aren't that good unless it is in an infantry blob.

I would counter argue though, with las vs. ML. ML offer a more TAC approach and are slightly cheaper (the 15 points it would cost you to upgrade can go somewhere else, seeing how in the IG codex you can get alot for 15 points).

Honestly, try making the CCS ML a las, then downgrade the vet's las to a ML.

In terms of armour, Executioners can be fun, but pricy, and with the new Get Hot! rules for vehicles, it could potentially kill itself. But if you decide to go for it, go big and get the PC sponsons. I guarantee any MEQ army will think twice when they see that.

The only problem with Demolishers is their range, at 24" (90% sure about that, IG codex not on hand) they are going have to get real close (for tanks), which makes threats like meltaguns/multimeltas and assaults deadlier.

On your exterminator, keep everything as is (even the HS) to make use of Pask.

-Cheers

This is my Leman Russ. There are many out there like it, but this one is mine. Without it, I am useless. Without me, it is useless.

I've got a couple more tank combinations to try.

Going to try two Executioners tonight.

In regards to the Bane Dog/Hound (the chem tank) - how good is that?

It could drive up in support of my infantry, giving them cover and then unleashing hell when they get there.

Surely the Leman Russes would distract the heavy anti tank guns.

Against players who have experience against IG, they will target your Bane Wolf first (Or any Hellhound variant really) because they know that troops in cover have a much better chance against a Russ than any kind of template. If you don't like the Bane Wolf, then try the Hellhound, that extra 12" on the template can be just nasty against non-MEQs.

Have fun with the Executioners, that's a lot of points.

I've been using a Manticore and 2 regular Leman Russ Battle Tanks. Works out pretty well for me. This is in conjunction with a lot of Chimeras full of plasma veterans and a couple Vendetta Gunships.... And Marbo... And an Aegis Line.

After 3 games last night against various opponents, this is looking like my final list:

CCS = 75
Autocannon, Regimental Standard.
CCS = 85
Lascannon, Regimental Standard.

Vets = 140
Autocannon, 3 Melta Gun, Grenadiers.
Vets = 140
Autocannon, 3 Melta Gun, Grenadiers.
Vets = 150
Lascannon, 3 Melta Gun, Grenadiers.
Vets = 150
Lascannon, 3 Melta Gun, Grenadiers.

Leman Russ Exterminator = 235
Pask, Lascannon, Heavy Bolter Sponsons.

2 Leman Russ Executioner = 490
Lascannons, Plasma Cannon Sponsons.

2 Leman Russ Vanquishers = 380
Lascannons, Heavy Bolter Sponsons.

1845/1850

This list was built mainly to see if two Executioners was viable in 1850 point games... the answer is a resounding yes. The tanks annihilated everything they set their templates on.

I added in the Vanquishers to bolster my armies anti tank firepower, which worked wonderfully - I don't see why people dislike this tank.

Game 1 was against Cron Air. This was a very short game. The Necrons set up their force (3 HS Barges and 2 HQ Barges and an Ark). The rest set up in reserve.
T1 my opponent drove forward while trying to hug cover. He was out of range with everything.
My T1 went like this...
Vanquishers took out a HS Barge with two Vanq shells, a lucky Lascannon hit from a Vet squad took out another. The combined FP of the Autocannons and Pask glanced the last HS Barge to death. The Executioners took 2 HP off the Ark.
On T2, I expected the full might of the Necron Fleet - My opponent rolled 1,1,1,2.
I left him with just a lord on T2 and he conceded. My opponent is a tourney player and took the loss very badly, calling my army cheesy and overpowered. He then tried to put me off my remaining games for the rest of the night by "helping" other players that I played against.

The next games were against my old Draigowing - which a friend bought ages ago and Tyranids.

Draigowing was tougher than I thought it would be with those damned Dreadknights distracting most of my firepower away from the Paladins, but I managed to table my opponent on T4.

Tyranids were very tough due to the immense amount of Spawning from Tervigons and a Swarmlord Deathstar. I had to keep the Gants in check from overrunning my lines while trying to kill a Tervigon every turn, while remembering that the Swarmlord will tear apart everything if it makes it into combat. I won the game but It was a total Bloodbath.
Both armies were similar in the way we used our larger models (Tanks and MC) to anchor our forces down. My infantry took the brunt of his merciless onslaught, whereas his Gants just kept coming. His MC did take a beating though and by T4, there were no Tervigons, just the Swarmlord Deathstar and a load of Gants tying up my infantry. I could have made my shooting priority better, but in this game I was a little disappointed with the two Vanquishers, who were relegated to mopping up Gants and making the odd necessary shot to bring down an MC if needed. Nids might be my armies Achilles heel as they can just keep recycling Gants.

Should I go with flamers instead of Meltas in the infantry squads? Against Nids, I really needed them.

Against nids? Flamers all the way.
Those things are mean, especially in overwatch.

I'm thinking in general as this army is TAC.
