Just as the Title says, I am looking to compile a list of recommended proxies for Various 40K armies.

I decided to do this because, imo, 40k has out grown its intended scale. Also, I had the opportunity to play a proxy game using 15mm models and it greatly allieviated the scale issues that have been bothering me since early 5th ed. It was the first 6th ed game that I've actually enjoyed.

My plan is to keep a list of various Sci-Fi minature companies and recommend units for 40k armies. I don't think we will be able to find full lists of proxies for every 40k army, but I think that we can find appropriate proxies for many of the factions.

The current list of companies with units that look like they will work is as follows:

Khurasan Minatures found here: http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/

Critical Mass Games found here: http://www.criticalmassgames.com/

Rebel Minis found here: http://www.rebelminis.com/15mmscifi.html

Eureka Minatures found here: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_102_107&sort=3a

There are more companies found at this site: http://15mmscifi.com/miniatures/

I will add specific companies to the first list at such time as suitable "GOOD LOOKING" minis are found.

The following will be a list of armies that I will add to unit by unit as we find suitable proxies.

Deamons

HQ

Elite

Troops

Fast Attack

Heavy Support

Imperial Guard(The easy one):

HQ

Elite

Rebel minis Terran Marines are one of many options to soon follow for basic Guardsmen or Vet Guard

HQ

Elite

Troops

Fast Attack

Storm Talon

Transports

Eldar & DE (Again, this will be combined, flavour will be added by the modeler)

HQ

Elite

Troops

Tau(This will be a tough one)

HQ

Elite

XV 15-25Stealthsuits

Troops

Fast Attack

Heavy Support
(use old xv88;s as the new broadsides)

Transports

I have left the list Blank for now but will add as posters make suggestions and discuss the pros and cons.

Thanks to any that help build this list.

Note- 40K epic is 6mm and to small. Am looking for 10-15mm only, though will consider some larger models if they fit the scale of heavies and super heavies.

Also, please no "your wasting your time" or "whats wrong with 40K's current scale?" comments/ questions

@Wandre- Thanks for the links. Am pondering which models would work for a particular faction.

@ Everyone, Here are a few that I think might work.

Tau

Thinking about these guys for Tau:

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/edi1.jpg

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/ttc1004.jpg

Would this make a good Stealthsuit?

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/ede2.jpg

IG

The top lady here is a perfect Commissar for the IG, though looking for ideas for the second lady:

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/t1901.jpg

I think that this would be a good Valk proxy:

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/ttc2403.jpg

Space Marines

Maybe these guys for Space Marines?:

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/end300.jpg

Comments pls.

Also, have more but don't want to overwhelm with links. Would post pics but am unsure if I can link directly from the company site without violating dakka's posting rules

Proxie Model's Trencher tank is a 15mm Leman Russ, almost exactly, and it's plastic. Also, they have individual round bases for 15mm figures. They also have a 15mm plastic artillery battery in the works.

Personally, I just plan to use 15mm plastic Germans from WGF or PSC and call them the Steel Kriegers of Rammstein. Maybe I'll spruce them up with some scifi bits or plasticard. For Space Marines, I'd just use 28mm models and call them Black library Marines.

Hi Bob(Takes a drink)

I had seen that model but had lost the link. Thanks for posting it.

About using GW models.

Actually was thinking of using base SMs as Terminators and Termies as Dreadnoughts.

For Tau, was thinking of using the Stealth Suits as Crisis Suits and Crisis Broadsides as ..well.. Broadsides. Was thinking XV9's as proxies for the XV104

Some models from 40k will cross over just fine (Like the old Eldar Avatar as itself and the Tyranid Warriors for Hive Tyrants). Most models won't make the cut though.

Also want to use some of the other company proxies for cost savings. My current estimate is that you could build 3 to 4 15mm armies for the cost of one GW 28mm army.

Again, thanks for the input and help. Would like to here more of your plans.

May I suggest Ground Zero Games? They have a massive range of 15mm, and I have been pleased with a lot of their products. I can also personally vouch that all the companies listed so far have been great, except Eureka on the count that I don't have any models from them.

I heavily support this, seeing as I have found 15mm/20mm to be the "sweet spot" for gaming (big enough to get detailed models, small enough to be cheap and have large battles). I mean, the possible ranges out there for 15mm Sci-Fi is just massive

EDIT: I would resist using base SM's as Termies. That doesn't fit scale wise too well to me. It makes sense that a Space Marine is gonna be bigger, but that shows the Space Marine as nearly double the height of a human and fluff wise they are only a couple feet taller. I know of a company that makes 15mm "Not Space-Marines" but I can't find it at the moment...

Thank you for the feed back and support in this endeavor.

Also, see your point about the scale jump by using SM's as termies. How do you feel about termies as dreadnoughts?

@All posters-

Decided to bite the bullet and see if some of these images will be ok.

First, What army/unit would this model be a good proxy for?:

How about this as a Storm Talon proxy?

I love this as a Valkerie proxy.

What do you guys think?

After some feed back, these will be paired to their proxied model in the OP master list.

I am just curious why you dont do this in 6 mm scale and use epic figs? Not criticizing, it just seems it would be easier and enable you to keep the look and feel of 40k more intact.

Thanks for your question

There are several reasons which are all personal(In that I don't expect everyone to agree but they are my reasons)

My reasons are:

1)Most Epic minis are too small. I'm finding that the 15-20mm models have the best balance of detail versus gameplay.(Also best balance for my aging eyes. )

2) At 15mm, most of the distance rules in 40K make better sense. Using 15mm minis I don't have to change any distance rules and the game gains a lot of the tactical maneuverability and scale of epic.
Currently in 40k 1 inch = 1 yard. By changing to 15mm the ratio doubles to 1 inch = 2 yards. This turns the average 6'x4' gametable into a 144 yd x 96 yd battlefield.
It also means that the average infantry rifle has an effective combat range of 48 yds.
The average Game turn is supposed to represent about 6 seconds. This means that the average infantry can cover up to 36 to 48 yds (When running as fast as they can to assault). This fits better than a man running at full speed only covering 18 yds in 6 seconds (A brisk walking pace)

Another way to put it is that, for me, a 15mm game fits that sweet middle spot between a squad/platoon scale game(40K) and a company/battalion scale game (40k Epic)

3)Epic is another game with its own rules.

4) Easy to find properly scaled terrain.

5)I like some of the 15mm models better than the GW ones

Now there may be some epic pieces that get repurposed(10mm tall Tyranid mc's and such). Will also look at using some small 40K models to represent large units.(Tau Stealth suits as Crisis & Broadsides)

Hope this answers your question satisfactorily.

OK, so no comment from dakka on those models.

Well, will forge ahead with a few others.

Am thinking that these guys from Rebel mini's might be a good starting point for 15mm Space Marines.

This Terran marine from rebel might make for a good IG infantry proxy. Is there another army where they would be a better proxy?

The Vipers from rebel might make great Imperial units. Either SM or IG. What do you guys think?

And jumps in with both feet.

This seems like a really good idea. Too bad that you will never get this generation of 40k players to go for it imo. I mean,
I get the concept but your asking this modern consumer generation to actually shop around for a good value. Most of this current generation can't be bothered with ordering from multiple companies just to build a basic force. They would rather pay way to much for the "convenience" of a crappy starter box.

What you are trying to do here is way to "old school" for the current player base. If you find a bunch of old Rogue trader players that still scratch build then they might be up for this. Heck, while I never played Rogue trader, I'm old enough to appreciate this so count me in.

As to some of your suggestions,

Your suggested SM's here look like they would be better as Terminators

I agree that these rebel minis "Vipers" would make good walkers/dreadnoughts for the IoM

Might I suggest that you find a way to show the scale of the various minis. It will help the few of us participating to give better feed back

Gonna go look for some cool models to suggest.

This is sad but true. 15mm is good for people who are low on budget as well, since 15mm stuff is so comparatively cheap. Im 16, and I appreciate some of this stuff quite a lot (then again, I love RT so that makes sense...)

Termies as Dreadnoughts could work.

Most all of your picks are good. Keep in mind the "Stealhsuit" thing wouldn't work as a stealthsuit! I have that model, and it's 35mm tall! It's meant to be a massive mecha war-suit for 15mm armies, and it would actually dwarf some of my 28mm stuff. It's a cool model though, Khurasan makes great stuff.

For the IG, Rebel's Terran Marines make good looking proxies! If you want people without masks though, their Home Guard make good IG as well. You can use the Terran Marines as well, just say they are fighting in a vacuum.

I would keep my eye out on TMP, some good stuff you can find there

First, welcome to the thread and thanks for the input.

Second, I don't know if I necessarily agree with your lazy youngsters theory but I can see your point.

and

Third, Even if most won't use or are unable to appreciate having a cheaper & better scaled option to the current 40 minis, it doesn't hurt anyone to develop this list. And, I'd like to believe that there are some who will appreciate this list and find it useful.

@washout77-

Thanks for the feed back and the info on the Khurasan suit being to large. I will remove it from the army list.in the op.

Will post some more pics soon.

Note to all-
I am open to the idea of mixing models/conversions as long as they are simple(Like head swaps). I want this list to be an easy to proxy list. If some units just do not have an easy proxy then will definitely consider more challenging conversion suggestions.

edit to add:

Do you guys think that this should be in the 40k modeling thread? I put it here because I wasn't sure if this was more a general discussion project or more of a modeling one.

@mods, if this would be better in the modeling forum then please move the thread there.

Tooting my own horn a bit here, I've been working on slowly building up a range of power armored soldiers and greenskins in 15mm on Shapeways.com:

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/http://www.shapeways.com/shops/anachrongames

The basic material isn't nearly as refined as casting in metal (it's strong but has a coarse texture), but it's durable, it affords options for poses and geometries you can't get with casting, and allows super-easy manufacturing for me because Shapeways does it all . I think it works fine for 15mm scale, although opinions certainly differ.

Hi Kovav and CalgarsPimpHand,

Welcome to the thread and thanks for your suggestions. will soon start updating some of the suggestions into the master list.

While I have your attention, I'd like to get your opinion on the Rebel tomcats here:

Should they be regular SM's that are true scale or small terminators?

I feel that the more we can get to discuss which models fit where, the better the list will be, so input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

First off, more IG proxies

http://www.picoarmor.com/pages/products.php?rc=210

Secondly, Ork Proxies
from the scene. they have some good bikes and a couple walkers also and powered armored troops

http://thesceneuk.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=16_113&sort=20a&page=2
and this stuff is cool
http://www.martianfront.com/home

anyway, as for wither they should represent normal SM or termies, I would say termies. Personally, I believe that an army should keep a style up, so your elites shuld go somewhat with your normals. like this, for example, pictures here is a Kremlin MANITOU with a Rebel Titan marine

Thus, if you were to use those guys as either baseline SM or termies, you would then have to think what minitures would accompany them.

@Kovav-

The models you suggested from the scene/ this website: http://thesceneuk.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=16_113&sort=20a&page=2

The Wasteland warriors could be used as Orks, Ogryn and for Nurgle.
and
The Bikers could be SM or Ork bikers.

Really good spot there

Also like the martian front WWI tanks that look almost exactly like the Leaman Russ and Demolisher. There is another company that has a Russ clone in 15mm,.....think they called it a Trench War tank. Or maybe it was just an early pic of these ???? Will try to find it and post it soon.

Also like that last pick of the rebel mini's. IMO, The big guy would be a basic SM and the rebel tomcats from ff's post would make great Termies. Hmm, seems like Orks, Sm's and especially IG will be easy to duplicate in 15mm. Perhaps we should ask focusedfire to "focus" on making a complete list for these 3 armies. Then we can go to work on the Tau & Eldar..

What about it focus'd?

I think you mean this, its from proxie models, and BobtheInquisitor already posted a link to it...tis called the Trencher MKII. I'm praying that some day he will again produce the Trencher tank MKI, because, as seen here, its an even better leman russ

As bob also mentioned, he has a basalisk in the works...anyway, he's a nice guy, very approachable, so if enough people expressed demand for the old trencher tanks, he would probably produce them again...thats why he's about to release the basalisks again.
What models are used for Orks, IG, and, to some extent, the Astartes are depending on personal tastes. Oh, here's a great example of what can be done for orks:

Yes, Thanks Kovav.

Curious, What models do you like for Chimera and Sentinel Proxies?

I ask because I am torn between the sentinel proxy options available from Khurasan and Rebel. There was another company but I lost the company name.....will try to dig it up soon.

As for the chimera, "Would a Russian Bmp in 15mm be the best or are there better options that you have seen?
