For reasons known only to them, Necron of the Thokt Dynasty materialize in orbit above planet Carmas IX and begin bombardment and invasion. No Declaration of War is made, no pretext for hostilities. Simply wave after wave of silent warriors seemingly bent on genocidal destruction teleporting to the planet's surface.

But why invade a planet a mere dozen or so light years from the Flesh Tearer home world of Cretacia? Perhaps a Space Marine Chapter more prone to contemplation would consider the motives behind such a bold provocation, but the Flesh Tearers simply respond with predictable ferocity, immediately dispatching the First Company to aid the planetary defense forces of Carmas IX. Are things as straightforward as they seem? Or are they being drawn into the devious Thokt Dynasty's nefarious web of intrigue?

(Apologies in advance for the pictures. I got a new phone that I figured would take decent pics with its billion or so megapixels, but they all ended up looking washed out, and many of the best shots were blurry and unusable. I will use a better camera for Part II)

Thokt Dynasty

Overlord Thutmos the Dreamweaver in Command Barge
Despairtek w/ AS
Despairtek w/ SP

Destroyer Lord Hotep

20 Necron Warriors
Ghost Ark

10 Necron Immortals armed with Tesla
Night Scythe Transport

5 Deathmarks
Night Scythe Transport

3 Wraiths

10 Scarab Swarms

2 Annihilation Barges with Tesla Annihilators

(We found out after the game the Necron were about 100 points over, but whatever)

Closeup of the Deathmarks

The Scenario - Cities of Death Firesweep
When a city ruin is occupied, the unit doing so plants a flag in that city ruin, and may move off to do so in more city ruins. The flag remains until an enemy unit occupies the ruin, at which point it plants its own flag instead. The side with the most flags at the end of the game wins.

Flesh Tearer Deployment
The jump pack marines deploy at the top looking to sweep through and capture ruins. The two Assault Squads on foot deploy in forward positions, looking to close with the Necron and force them from their objectives through sheer brutality. The Razorbacks and Land Speeders deploy behind them to lend fire support, while the bikes deploy in position to move battlefield right and flank the enemy. Tactical Squad Fury deploys in the ruined factory to defend the Flesh Tearer rear-field objectives.

Thokt Deployment
The Annihilation Barges deploy to the right, ready to engage the enemy with their devastating firepower, the Wraiths and Destroyer Lord Hotep deploy in forward positions, and the Scarab swarms deploy in the center with an eye towards tying up and harassing the Flesh Tearers. The Warriors and Ghost Ark hang back looking to capture objectives and lend support where needed. The Night Scythes stay in reserve with their mounted units.

The forces face off

Ever the subtle tacticians, the Flesh Tearers push forward fearlessly at the top of Turn 1, daring the Necron to approach the objectives.

A down-barrel view of the Razorback shaving a few wounds off of the Wraiths and Destroyer Lord Hotep with the fury of its assault cannons (Lord takes 1 wound, Wraiths take 1 wound)

The Thokt return fire, clipping the Land Speeder's wing with their Gauss Rifles and sending it smashing into the wall of the ruin

In an audacious move, Lord Hotep and his Wraiths charge, bringing the fight to the Flesh Tearers but they take a wound from the overwatch flamer on the way in.
The Space Marine Sergeant boldly challenges the Necron Lord to a duel, but is easily decapitated by his strange alien blade

A Scarab Swarm bounces off of the Assault Squad to the right, losing all but one model and inflicting not even a single wound for its trouble

Here comes the cavalry!! In the Flesh Tearer Turn the Jump Pack Marines slam into the combat, lending their furious support to their beleaguered battle brothers (30+ Furious Charge Marine attacks!)

And it's enough to turn the tide. The combined might of more than twenty bloodthirsty Space Marines annihilates the Necron

The middle of Turn 2 sees the Space Marines in good position with four objectives claimed and the Necron have their noses bloodied. But the fight is far from over.

The skies darken and the Night Scythes fly onto the table, disgorging their deadly cargo
Deathmarks and Cryptek

Immortals

The Deathmarks and Crypeks slaughter three of the five Tactical Marines defending their backfield. Lord Thutmos destroys a Razorback with his blade, and the Immortals kill a couple of Assault Marines.
Necron shooting proves largely ineffective against a foe that feels no pain (the Tearers were on fire with their armor saves and FNP)

In the Space Marine turn, Assault Marines drop from the skies on to the Necron Immortals

The remaining two tactical marines close the distance with the Deathmarks and charge, looking to tie them up and prevent them from taking objectives

Shrouded in malevolent shadows, Overlord Thutmos descends from his crippled chariot. The Space Marine bikers open fire on him, doing one wound.
They lower their heads and slam their thousand-pound bikes into him, causing another wound. Overlord Thutmos merely laughs the damage off and slays two of them for their efforts.

The state of things middle of Turn 3

The close combat prowess of the Assault Marines is simply too much for the Necron Immortals. They are crushed under the heels of the advancing Flesh Tearers

The Necron Ghost Ark disembarks its passengers into the ruin, claiming another objective. The count now is 4 - 3, in favor of the Space Marines.

The Deathmarks pummel a Tactical Marine to death with the butts of their rifles, but his Brother tenaciously hangs on for turn after turn, tying them up

The Assault Marines on foot break through to the Warriors on the other side of the ruins, assaulting them

A decimated Assault Squad comes to the aid of its embattled Tactical Marine Brother against the Deathmarks

It's just too much. The Necron Warriors are no match for Captain Olmik and his Assault Marines. The Flesh Tearers destroy them and claim another objective.
Meanwhile, jump squad Wrath claims another objective to the north. The score is now 6 - 2 in favor of the Space Marines

The Middle of Turn 5

And.... PHASE OUT. The Necron simply disappear, completely fading from existence.

The bewildered Flesh Tearers secure the area and take count of their dead and wounded to discover... there is no trace whatsoever of two of their battle brothers. Could the Necron have phased out with them? A Pyrrhic victory for the Space Marines...

This was a great fight!! The Flesh Tearers were on fire with their saves and with their damage output, but things were close on objectives until the very end. Really a lot of fun.

Stay tuned for Part II

Great report XM - always a pleasure to see well painted armies and terrain on show. Nice to have a narrative too.

It will be good to get some up close shots of the forces next game - there looks to be some nice paintwork on them.

Looking forward to the rest of the campaign.

Thank you! I actually have a few more closeups. I have closeups of my army, but they are not from this game. Enjoy!

Excellent report. Mixed narratives with a bit of rule info always make a batrep actually enjoyable. I want more.

Had a great time duking it out with XM! Great terrain and beautiful brushwork. Next time the marines won't win so handily! Overlord Thutmos won't make the same mistakes twice.

Yes, thanks for the game! For someone who hadn't played since 3rd ed, you did fine! It's weird, when you read this battle report, it looks like it was a total ass-kicking, but it really didn't feel like it was when we were playing. Things were close on objectives throughout. I think it was that lucky charge I got off on those warriors that really decided things.

And sorry XM, but I'm still rooting for the Necrons! Go, my brother! Crush the damned SPEEESH MAREEENS next time!
