Numberless Necron Warrior
|
Now nearly five years ago, when I was still collecting and playing my orks a lot, I picked up a box of Necron Warriors and a pewter lord. I just really liked the vibe the necrons had, but they were in a cupboard for nearly four years, untill I heard they would be getting a codex revamp. So, just before the new Necron Codex hit, I decided that an army I could actually transport in my backpack without to much trouble (my orks number to many boyz to efficiently take with me, and I don't have any terrain at home) would be great, and I chose my (still boxed) necrons.
Since then, things have escalated and my necron force is still growing. After some initial doubt about their new lore, I decided to run with it and embrace the weirdness, realising that the lore has suddenly given me excuses to convert mini's.
So, the paintjob is tabletop quality, intented to be done quickly. I know myself, I can get sidetracked very easily so i needed a very simple paintjob that was up to my moderate standard.
I paint the mini's with a mixture of 50% chaos black and 50% boltgun metal (yes, I'm that old fashioned ), I then wash them with a self-made chaos black wash and then drybrush them again with boltgun (with some black added for most lords). Weapons get scorpion green powercores and lords get some extra shining gold parts and armorplates.
So, time to introduce Dakka to my army:
The air was filled with static electricity and the tang of ozone. The ornate stasis casks on both side of the corridor hissed with steam and corrosive fumes. The greenish floodlights were unable to pierce the wisps of vapor, succeeding only in turning the mists to a lurid emerald color.
With an ear-piercing sound, several of the statis tombs began unfolding, layer after layer of metal surfaces sliding from each other, grinding millenia of dust and deposits between them. A single hand extended from the centre casket. An articulated, metal hand, with nearly every detail of an organic one captured in vivid detail on it's surface. Tiny capilaries filled with restorative oils and liquid transducers pumped over the back of the hand, simulating arteries and blood. Microfiber bundles moved like muscle underneath a flowing metal skin that adjusted it's tension and strength to the force exerted from the inside.
The hand stretched out, flexed it's fingers, and froze. Two pinpricks of emerald light winked into existence in the cask, growing slightly, until they cast a minor reflection on the hand. Slowly but surely, a shape disentangled itself from the shadows inside the cask. In the gloom and the poor lighting one would be forgiven the assumption that this was a tall, gaunt man in a baroque and lurid piece of armour. But the metal skin, the articulate golden death mask and greenish optical sensors in place of organic eyes made clear that this was not the statis pod for any organic creature, but the resting place for something far older, and far removed from the ravages of mortality.
The creature stood over 4 metres tall, it's legs encased in a dark green robe ornamented with flowing golden runes and floating a few centimetres above the floor. Its chest was encased in articulate, and ancient armor, that was attached to its frame, with several micro-generators creating a forest of machinery and pipes on its back, some extending over its shoulders and head. Its face was a golden rictus grin, with a stylised beard, more akin with an ancient painting than any mortal visage.
With a flick of its wrist an ornate staff materialised in its hand, topped by a wicked glaive humming with contained power. It glanced left and right. Other creatures were emerging from similar casks.
Once, it's name had been Sebekhetep, and he had ruled as lord and master over nearly a dozen worlds. Then war had come, followed by biotransferrance and the great sleep. Most data had been reabsorbed into his new frame, but something was off, wrong. Context was lost. Memory was there, but no emotion, no feeling attached to the disjointed imagery in his head. His... its... was there any use to the appelation of gender when one has been reborn into undying living metal? For countless microseconds, doubts raced the synthetic neural pathways of him/its new form. Programmed directives clashed with ancient memories, concepts of leadership and loyalty warred with survival protocols, lessons of aeons past were found incompatible with newly added directives.
As the remains of what was once the man warred with the new machine it had become, it's subjects stumbled. Slaved to his will, his doubts and fears spilled over, damaging memory blockades, uprooting protocols and deleting an entire piece of code and recollection.
In seconds, it was over. A new being looked out of it's optical processors. Not the unfeeling machine that was intended, and not the man used to create it. Something in between. A mental hybrid of sorts.
Tilting it's head, it downloaded the reason for it's awakening, realising that on the surface, something or someone had unearthed a small fragment of the tomb complex.
It turned it's face at the rising figures and a voice, hollow and deep sounded: "My friends, prepare yourselves. I believe we have... visitors"
Fifteen hundred metres away, mainly vertically, adept Sanmich stopped and cast a glance at one of the displays. Muttering a prayer to the Omnissiah, she was to absorbed to notice a tiny warning rune flickering on the motion sensor of one of the servo skulls she had sent into the ancient caverns. It flashed twice, and then the servo-skull stopped transmitting.
My warriors, the silent, cold heart of my army.
The swarms of canoptek scarabs that range ahead of my forces.
The Grand Vizier Raphet-Mal, second in command of my forces (and an experiment in speedpainting, he didn't turn out so great, but he'll do for now)

Adding to the previous post, here is my Phaeron, his majesty Sebekhetep. Or at least, that was his name before his rebirth into his now fugue state.
The model is quite fragile, consisting of both plastic and pewter, so he rarely leaves the cupboard (and never travels).
He is by far my favorite model, and the most intimidating project I finished so far, conversionwise.

Time for the rest of the finished army.
First off, another member of the Royal Court, Nomarch Thakun. Destroyer Lord and master of the Wraith-Wing.
Here we have Grav Penash (Lord) and Praetorian Sudar (who doubles as a lord on the tabletop).
My Deathmark squad.
The Phaeron's bodyguard, his tireles guardians, the Lychguard
And also a link to my WiP thread, where I'm currently working on Flayed Ones and crypteks.

Looks great! That phaeron model is super cool.
The only thing I would suggest is to give the scarab and warrior bases a quick drybrush with some dark and light gray to help the texture really pop. (Though maybe you've already done that and the pictures just don't show it)

Good use of the Cryx Asphyxious model as your Phaeron - very imposing.
Nice "traditional" paintscheme, but the gold on the Lychguards looks a little flat - can't tell if you washed the gold from the photo.
Are the shoulder-plates of the Lychguard green or black? Whichever color, some edge highlighting would improve the appearance.
Still, nice work.

Thanks for the praise, I'm quite fond of my little death-bots tbh, even though my painting is not on par to most what's displayed here (from time to time I turn green like an ork with envy when browsing here )

The bases have been drybrushed, the destroyer lord picture gives a better view how they look, the picture makes the bases look very dark. (they are darkish, but not that bad. It's intended to look like scorched earth) Might want to retouch them at a later time with a slightly lighter grey as well.

The shoulders are Dark Angels green across the board. But a good point, an edge highlight might really improve them, thanks for the idea, and I'll look into a wash for the gold.

Thanks Silverback!

Heh, I'm quite proud of my phaeron, the conversion turned out very well. As Scott allready saw, it's the epic Asphyxious model from Privateer. Cryx models are a great source of conversions for lords/crypteks and other high class necrontyr.

Well, it's been a while since I last updated this thread. my apologies for both the radio-silence and the activation of the resurrection protocols on this post (I thought it would be better to keep all my progress in a single post, even with the time-skip. I hope that is acceptable to the mods).
The last year has seen the dynasty expanding only slowly, only painting one or two models at a time. But, since there are updates, on to the pictures!
The Flayed ones are finished! After building them, I did not think either my painting or my greenstuffing was up to par, so they lay around for a long while before I dared touch them. Finally, the technical paint pulled me over the edge to start splattering them with fake blood.
The Flayed One up front (with the head collection) was built by my wife.
Cryptek Ohmosis, Lord of the Storm.
The staff is my first attempt at blending and painting lightning, which both came out quite all right. The candelabra on his back is the generator for his lightning field. He's yet another conversion of a privateer model, this time a cryx bane knight.
The second of my team of crypteks; Plasmancer Ptophis.
Once again, my unbuild warmachines models were plundered to build him. His lower body is made from a skarlock, and his face and arm are parts from a destroyer lord I did not use. The beard was made from the back-ribs of a triarch preatorian.
Last but not least, my C'tan Shard of the Nightbringer.
I traded this gentleman for some tyranids and he was a blast to paint. I mixed every paint with metallics, to create the effect that even the robes are part of his necrodermis.
I hope you all enjoy the new models in the collection.
