Hey all. This will be my 3rd army in progress. My other two being SM and Cron. IG was the first army I built when I got back into the hobby in 2006ish. I painted them fast, sticking with the GW Cadian scheme and think it is about time for a reboot as the whole green base is looking a little old

I have decided to do 500 points (5th edition) first as this is what we play at work. My Nemesis is a Green tide player so I will configure accordingly ... also building with what I have.

First off a start to a veteran squad. Paint scheme:-

some wip

As you may or may not be able to see from the bad photographs. I am going for a winter scheme. I want the troops to look like they have had to repaint their armour and scavenge the rest of their kit so some is green or brown.

Next a start to a Lemun Russ Punisher

This is salvaged from one of three Lemun Russ Tanks. They are in a pretty bad state as I had already salvaged them from Ebay the first time around.

My goal for 500 points, anti green tide is:-
HQ
Command Squad 4x grenade launchers

Troop
Vets 2x grenade launcher autocannon
Vets 2x grenade launcher autocannon

Heavy
Lemun Russ Punisher
Griffon

I am sure this is not the most competitive list but the Punisher just looks so cool

Thanks fo rlooking, Vim

Very nice, what sort of camo pattern are you planning to use on the tanks?

Chosen Men, are you? Well, I didn't choose you.

Thanks for the replies guys. Small update
Ha ha yes the scarves. I sculpted them only to realize that they look like the kind of man accessory I see on the Paris metro every day however the little plastic men who face down slavering alien hordes every day get to wear whatever they want
Hey there Mr Hyenajoe. The base of the kneeling trooper has been built up with Mr Hobby, Mr. White Putty. It is a toothpaste like past that hardens to the consistency of plastic. It is meant for gap filling but I just used it here to build volume.
So far I have not put any camo onto the tank. Do you think I should?

Need some advice on the tank. Do you think I should add snow to it or would snow just melt right off due to the engine and gun? I am also going to get GW dirt texture paint for the tracks. Is this product any good. I bought the snow texture to see what it was like and I must say I was very disappointed.

You may not want to go back now that you have finished the tank, but have you heard of whitewashing? Troops would essentially throw white paint over the tank to camouflage it in winter, you get an effect like the example I found below that shows where the paint starts to wear off. It seems like it would fit well with the scavenged look you are going for with your troops. They look great already, though.

I wasn't too taken with the textured browm from gw. I think you'd be better off with really fine sand and normal paint. Regarding ice and snow on the tank, it could probably build up in the recesses on the sides and the very top of the turret. I would imagine that these areas would be sufficiently remote from heating elements to remain seb zero. Given that the crew needs to be able to function, it would be really inefficient to have to keep the internal temperature high enough to counter the heat sink effect of a whole tank hull. Also in an arctic environment yhey wouldn't want the hull giving off too much IR or else it would shine like a star against the background scenery.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Thanks guys.
Iskandur: That is the roughly the technique I used but my white wash was too even and I have under done the chipping. I will re-touch the chipping using the sponge technique
Flinty: Is the GW dirt not just fine sand with paint anyway? I know that is what the snow effect is. I will go with what you say though. Maybe I'll mix in a little PVA glue to bind it better

I have also started the Griffin.

This is an Ebay rescue It was a Hell Hound but I removed the back years ago for no good reason. I am wondering if any one who owns a Griffin can give the rough diameter of the gun barrel and length?

The weapon on the gryffon is the same as the FW heavy mortar (weighs in at around £20 though). http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Guard/Imperial_Guard_Emplacements/IMPERIAL-HEAVY-MORTAR.html

very nice work btw.

Just a small update today. I haven't done much over the weekend.

Finished the lower coat on the commander

I have found with snow flock it is a good idea to paint the area where you want the snow to be white. It stops the snow from being translucent and slush like.

Flock layer.

Will get the gun and crew done asap

Hey all. Thanks for the feedback. Slow progress but have the Punisher finished now. The photo quality is bad but you get the idea. Added some mud and snow which is something i have never done before. Was worried the tank would just turn into a formless mess but it worked out.

Not worked on this project for a while as I was caught up working on m Necrons for a work tournament
Anyhoo I'm back and have a few things i've been working on.

First up. my version of Marbo. Still have to come up with a name for him.
As you can see I used the Catachan plastics as the base. I did some greenstuffing on the shoulders to make them look more natural but kind of screwed up the back left, oh well.

I repainted an old Sentinel I had laying around. It is not part of my now 650 points work list but was fun to do. There is a little dead guy on the base.

And finally I have done a few turrets for my Lemun Russ chassis.

Soon I will have the HQ plus two vet squads up.

Hi all.
Finally I have the HQ and two troop ready to play my 650 points list. So I introduce you to.

Company command with Master of the ordinance.

Vet squad with grenade launchers and auto cannon.

Vet squad with flamers

I know I know, flamers on vets is a waste but I get three flamers in one squad.

Great. Now I'm depressed. Everyone out there is so damn awesome with greenstuff. I can barely cover up gaps properly with the stuff while you lot make scarfs and legs and whole freaking dragon-encrusted primarch armour. Screw warhammer, I'm off playing with toy blocks...

The Punisher looks magnificent. I can actually believe that thing was driving around in the mud!

This is a good chance to put the ever-dreaded frosting to good use. Wait for a good humid day, and varnish the tanks and field pieces and viola! That dreaded frost effect comes into it's own as a final touch of weathering!

I always think white is a great base colour for soem orange and other rust colours on your tanks. I would do more rust! I love painting rust. Plus, all that snow plus hot engines = rwater and rust!

Great looking army

Fantastic looking army, my only point would be to add some footprints in the snow? I think that'd look really great

Here's an example of a griffon using a cast of the old school metal griffon mortar kit for scale purposes:

and a WIP shot of the same tank showing the recessed floor plate and mortar beside it.

I can say, you've done an AMAZING job on your guard army so far! Puts my Vostroyans to shame! I wish I was as talented as you with Greenstuff, as has been said by Kosake I can barely use it to fill gaps, let alone (beautifully) scupt with it as you have.

I hope that my pictures above provide some help for your Griffon conversion. I know Griffons are is worth their weight in GOLD for me most games. I run a pair of them and they almost always pick up more than their points value of infantry every game.

Please keep updating! I hope to see more of your army soon sir.

Take it easy.

Hi all.
Thanks for the feedback
In the future I will aim to put some footprints on the bases to tell more of a story. Thanks for the Griffin ref Red_Thirst. I had put the Griffin aside to start work on Orks but now have no choice to finish it

The more I look at the model as it exists, the more I see wrong with it. All the tracks were put on squint, a great big hole in the hull and rivets missing.

Tracks removed.

Where I am at right now. Going for the old school layout with an armored lip.
