Hey all,

After a fairly disastrous first attempt at a miniature, I had a stab at my second which is the Goblin King from the Escape from Goblin Town set. I learned a LOT from this miniature (mainly how much I have to improve my brush technique - layering and highlighting is HARD), but I'd be really grateful for any extra input from you guys so that I can stick with this and keep improving. The quality on this site is pretty scary, but I'm hoping that within 15-20 years I can get to the same level!

That's really nicely handled, especially for a second ever attempt! There's people on here selling their services as painters with less apparent skill.

Elect of the Plaguefather 4500pts

I agree, some "pro painted"miniatures and commission painters that I have seen don't do as well as you. You won't need 15-20 years, with a little practice over the next year or two you will be golden.

I agree with thesentiments above; a really solid effort for a second attempt, You obviously have a good understanding of what you are trying to achieve. None of us improve without criticism though, so I'll mention a couple of points below:

Eyes. I find eyes are one of the hardest parts of a model to get right. Particularly getting them both looking in the same direction, but its worth spending a long time to get them right. Your model's eyes have a lot of pure white on them, which draws attention to them. I'd be tempted to try a red or purple wash on them to tone them down. then you can put a pure white dot in the upper corner to create the illusion of wetness, There's no secret to doing eyes really, just a really fine point on your brush, a steady hand and patience,

Fur and textures. It's worth reading up on drybrushing for highly textured surfaces, as it is an easy technique to make detail pop. Careful not to overuse it though - it can make your paint job look powdery. Just my tuppence. Keep painting, and keep posting!

I think you need a little more practice turning the photos the right way up - but when I put my head on its side it looks really quite good.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for the feedback and comments - I'll work on holding the camera the right way for next time!

Good call on the eyes - I might do a yellow wash on them, give him that jaundiced look which might fit in well. Also a good call on the drybrushing, been watching some tutorial videos about it, really seems to give a dramatic effect.

My next conundrum is what to paint next. I'm not really into the gaming aspect of it yet - partly due to the fact I'm living in a non-English speaking country where GW isn't very popular - but also because I went a bit nuts and bought loads of models which I liked the look of, lol. I might have a stab at Eldar - I really like the style of the models, and the colour scheme for the new Iyanden army is awesome. Plus, I don't think they're quite as hard to mess up as other models...time will tell! I'll stick one up here after I've finished painting, see what the feedback is.

Thanks again!

You should be able to rotate the photos in a photo editing program?

I never got into the gaming aspect either - its all about painting for me. Tiny tiny brushes.
