My local
FLGS had a fun little do the other day. 1000 points, no flying anything (though you could take "flyers"... they just didn't fly, they jumped or skimmed depending). No great anti-flyer sentiment behind this, just something to shake up the local meta which was getting a bit stale. I'd recently picked up a very nice Space Wolf army (which has exactly zero anti-flyer capability) and I thought this would be a good opportunity to give it a spin. Took my 9-year-old with me and we did it as a team... he did the dice rolling and moving and I did the strategizing. It was a very fun & friendly little affair with 10 participants and a silly premise (looking for the Emperor's lost luggage). A good time all-round.

Game 1 vs. Justin and his Necrons: (The Scouring) For some stupid reason I never took a picture of the entire table until the later turns... sorry about that. We laid out the hidden objectives, Justin won the roll off and took the end of the table with 3 objectives, leaving me with 2. I figured it was going to be a long game as I'd have to march my entire army, including the
ML squads... right into his teeth, and I only had 3 scoring units to begin with which meant I'd have to leave two of them behind. Not good. However, when the counters were revealed it turned out that his three weren't worth as much as my two... so he'd have to march across the table into MY teeth. Much better... and really the thing that decided the game.
The armies deploy thusly...
Long fangs are looking mighty fine on that hill.
The Necrons have first turn and move out. You can see the spread of objectives in this shot. They need to get the center objective to win, but they only have 4 scoring units, so if I can kill just one, the best they can hope for is a tie. They could, of course... drive me off of one of my objectives, but with all the heavy fire power I have available, that's probably not all too likely.
We move out as well. One rhino going to cover our objective on the left, the other moving forward cautiously with the wolves close behind to claim the near objective. The long fangs open up on the Anni-barge on the left, stripping off 2 hull points and immobilizing it.
The Necrons continue to move forward (like they have any choice).
We nearly have both of our objectives secured. We're playing it cautiously in the face of all that Necron fire power.
Unfortunately for the Necrons, the Long Fangs do their job only too well...
The Necrons continue to move forward, oblivious of losses.
I get a wild hair and direct my Commander to send the wolves down the left flank. There is some shooting of course and a few scarab bases and warriors bite the dust. Nothing major. Now that the grey hunters are safely dropped off in cover at the objective marker, the rhino goes off to cause some trouble.
As they advance towards the central objective, the warriors manage to take a hull point off of the near rhino and with the scarab swarms, are seriously in control of the center of the board. In spite of losing their heavy support, the objectives are so close together over there that they're still very much in the game.
Our
TWC continues to drive down the left flank. Lord I love cavalry... Withering fire from the long fangs continues to brunt the Necron tide as it flows over the pyramid. Those pesky warriors keep standing up though. I think I've killed that entire squad at least twice already!
The Necrons have now established themselves on three different objectives that score enough to secure a tie. Even though this pic doesn't show it... the warriors on the left did make it to the middle objective during their movement, thus securing the much needed two victory points it carried.
The Long Fangs do their jobs once again and beat back the Necrons from the center objective, killing enough that they lose control and wiping out the scarabs lest they get any ideas of glory (
FA were scoring in this scenario). Meanwhile, the
TWC finishes it's head-long rush down the edge of the table and their run move allows them to claim the far objective (just 1 point) *and* Line Breaker. They made it by 1/16"!
We roll and the game ends on T5!
Final Talley:
Necrons: 4 pts. (objectives)
SW: 8 pts (objectives) + first blood, slay the warlord, line breaker = 11 pts.
As one-sided as the score would appear to indicate, we were sweating it all the way to the end. There was just such a concentration of objectives on his half of the board that even with his losses, Justin was in good position to earn a lot of points. Justin was a great opponent and didn't ever give up... he just did what Necrons are supposed to do... kept coming! As you can tell from the semi-finished state of his army, he was just getting back into
40k and I think this was his first 6th edition game.
This was the first time my son and I played like this, as a team sharing control of a single army. It was *really* fun for both of us & no one seemed to mind as it wasn't like facing two adults who can scheme and plan against you. It was me making the plans, him doing the physical work... that seemed to work out OK for our opponents and was delightful for us.
The 11 points were enough to put us at top table for the next round. We knew we'd be in for it... and we were. But that's another story to be told...
