So, I recently got about 750 points of guard for a hell of a discount price, and I've begun painting them in a desert scheme, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to paint a deserty, kinda british ww2 camo pattern on a russ. The infantry are fine, but my russ is currently mid stone colour, from the Humbrol paint range. Middlestone from vallejo sort of colour...if that helps.

Pictures of the russ and one of my infantry will be coming soon as well.

I'd recommend YouTube-ing a tutorial for a WWII tank and see what the modelers do with it. shouldn't be hard to copy the technique over to a Russ.

Lookin great!

You could try some camo netting with a bit of medical gauze, some pva, some paint and some water to give it that desert rat kinda look.

That's EXACTLY what I'm going for!! I even intend to have a monty style tank commander for my pask-vanquisher.

I was wondering whether I should put a black line around the darker spots, or do you guys think that would be too much?

I think a line would be too much, I think you could just darken the area a bit more to make it stand out, a black line would make it stand out a ton.

Looking very very nice if it was nicely weathered to it'd be amazing

I would love to see that finished off as chocolate chips

Honestly a nice medium or dark brown will round out the camo.

I'm trying to stay as close to ww2 british as possible, so choc chip really wouldn't fit with what I'm trying to do. I'd love to add a slightly darker brown, but I don't want to add another colour and ruin what I've already done, and there doesn't seem to be enough room for another colour anyway.

cookies, what sort of thing did you have in mind? I'm brand new to painting tanks so weathering them is something I've obviously never done!

What I had in mind was sort of a light desert dust across the vehicle and/or possibly light dried mud up the sides. If you look at weathering articles on ww2 scale tanks again it'd help the dust and dirt would help verify the camoflage and the enviroment

Also noticed your not far from where I am in p'boro

What do you guys think of this so far? I know the scratches and chips are wrong, by I like the weathered edges, afterall, in a desert any hard edges are literally sand blasted to bare metal, or so I read on other forums.

On the tank as a whole...about 3 days, about 8 hours a day. Should have her finished by morning or tomorrow night.

It's looking pretty spectacular so far dude. On the rare occasions I've done camo patterns I've used torn up sponge instead of a brush. It gives a more random finish. As for the weathering have you tried using ash. I took some pics of my iron warriors recently using barbecue ash as a backdrop. They looked pretty cool. Which got me thinking wether the stuff could be hairsprayed onto the mini to give it the effect of fighting in ash wastes. Will try to upload a pic shortly.

Camo is complete, just nerds a dusting, sponsons finished and some extreme weathering and she's done.
What do you all think?
