Does anyone have any advice for how might be best to stain felt cloth?

Context; To save space I've purchased some semi-dense white felt cloth to give a nice thick snow effect, handily it can be folded over the centre and changed to make roads as necessary. However I feel like it needs a little more randomness, I've got scenery bits but need to give it some variance. Has anyone stained/painted felt before now? I got the impression that certain paints may simply flake away, hence the staining necessity.

Pics of how it looks now under some servitors, to show that this stuff can look nice and crisp, like new snow. But there will be bits that I want slightly denser/darker.

Any tips o' wise and gracious forumers?

I'd hit up a hobby lobby, micheals or joann fabrics and look at the fabric parts of it. They have all sorts of stuff for dying cloth for people who want to make their own garments. I'm sure you could find something or someone there that could help with it.

I would just hit it with some random light sprays of light grey spray paints. That should give you a slightly more mottled effect.
