I may run this guy as Brother Corbulo seeing as he's quite fancy...

I must also mention SincaiN from whom I blatantly and shamelessly ripped off the idea for the conversion & pose.

C&C welcome!

Thanks for the comments guys!

@ Arrathon, first you need to get a decent camera
Seriously though, a DSLR is best but it doesn't need to be particularly fancy, you can get decent ones second hand from eBay or whatever.
I use a light tent which softens the light. You want to use manual mode, manual focus and drop the ISO quite low (about 100) and use a high f-number (16). Pull the camera back away from the model and zoom in a bit, don't go in too close.
Use a tripod and a cable release or timer mode – the main thing you need to avoid is camera shake.

@ SincaiN - thanks, nice to have feedback from the guy who inspired the model

Very very nice work. Can I ask, where did you get your backdrop from?

Wow, that is a mind boogerlin' model there, sir. Well done.

I realise that this is probably on page one of book one of Big Boys' Painting Tips, but what method did you use for the glowing thruster?

Thanks Vourne! I got the backdrop from Massive Voodoo – here

Cheers Eldercaveman, the head and legs are from the Dark Angels kit. Backpack and wings from Sanguinary Guard, right arm and torso from Death Company and left arm from Command Squad kit.
I copied it from SincaiN so could hardly mind you copying it from me

Thank you Tower75 – I masked around the edge with Tamiya tape, primed the thruster white, then sprayed the whole thing Dark Sea Blue (Vallejo Model Air), then Light Sea Blue in the middle, then a small area of White right in the centre. Then some edge highlights with White.

This is a great model, I love the effect on the wings and the tone of the red.

That model is awesome! The combination of the robes and the wings really makes an impact and add a lot of drama to make a really cool mini.

Thanks for the comments guys! I should remind everyone that I owe the idea of the kitbash entirely to SincaiN

@ Nick - I just have a compact (Canon G12) so no interchangeable lens but if you have a DSLR then I hear a Macro 100mm 1:2:8 is what you want

How do you paint your whites for armour.wings?

Made in gb
Thunderhawk Pilot Dropping From Orbit

England

For the armour it was white primer, thinned black ink wash, very thin sepia wash (using glaze medium as the thinner) and then layered / highlighted back up with thin coats of white (again using glaze medium)

For the wings they were primed all over black, then white from above, sepia/glaze medium wash, drybrush offwhite, light drybrush white.

Mixing washes with glaze medium makes a big difference - it makes it run more into the recesses and not stain the surfaces.

I have heard about people using glazes to help break up the surface tension in washes, but never tried it. Is there a particular medium you would recommend?
