Frothing Warhound of Chaos
|
Hello
I would like to introduce the beginnings of my first Warhammer 40K army. I'm still trying to think of a name for it so any suggestions or examples would be great!
When I was choosing which army to begin with one of my main concerns was that I wanted something that I could make my own, and preferably something I wouldn't get bored painting. In the end I chose daemons because I figured that, since they're actually the physical forms of chaos, I could paint them however I liked
I don't have too many different colours yet so I'm trying to mix some while I build up my collection. If anyone has any ideas for colours I haven't tried please let me know because I have a lot more to paint and I would like them all to be as different as possible.
The idea I've gone with is this: You do not want to lose to this army because it would be embarrassing as hell.
I'm new to the game- that's pretty obvious- yet in all our games I've always beaten my boyfriend (he's been playing for years) so I wanted to make things worse by making my own army look hilarious so that anyone I beat feels extra stupid. Muahahaha!
Don't get me wrong, I'm taking my army pretty seriously. I've got a list of models to build it up to a competitive army and I really do like my daemons, despite their lack of firepower... I'm just having so much fun painting each one uniquely, because why on earth would chaos form into identical monsters!?
I hope you like the direction I've taken. It's different at least! And any opinions or comments are most welcome because I need as many ideas as possible to finish my army of embarrassment. *evil chuckle*

Sounds interesting You should post some pics, so people can have a stronger idea of what you are going for!
For the Horrors, you could do bright yellows that slowly blend to green, then red, then blue! Almost Rainbow-y, so you can have the brightest parts near their hands and faces, which should pop really nicely.

You could make a slannesh / nurgle army, bright pinks but still rotten, maybe like an emphasis on raw pink flesh. and conversions to try to make the nurgle look femalish.

Ooh wow I was just about to post my photos so far and I already have comments? You guys are too nice
Hopefully these photos will give you more of an idea of what I'm doing... You'll probably think it's incredibly silly, and it is!
It's also a good way of trying out new techniques though..
Oh and I forgot to mention- my army is primarily Khorne and Slannesh. Yes, I know that they hate each other, but those were the models I preferred so I just went for it. I also have a small unit of corrupted Space Marines, who have decorated their armour appropriately..

These are my Space Marines. The ones with the initials H.G are the ones I did. My boyfriend did the first one, which is why it stands out a bit.
I hope you can start to see my theme through these guys- AS MANY DIFFERENT COLOURS AS POSSIBLE!
Sorry for the lousy photo quality. I don't know if you can tell, but I'm trying to layer up lighter colours on darker for the main armour and edge some of the details to make them stand out. Basically these are me experimenting

I hate to see tons of armies painted to the same colours as every one before them.
For daemons, heres a quick few pics of my "different" shiny daemons:

Ooh cool those shiny colours work so well! I've used some shiny ones on mine too a little, but I'll get to that.
Here's a closer look at the layering on my space marines because I realised that those photos just look like block colour...
It's still not terribly clear :/ hmm...

Okay so here's an introduction to my daemons...
I'm using a mixture of techniques that I want to try out.. some have picked out muscles and some don't- I'm not very good at that yet
These are the older models, which are nice and big and bulky, but unfortunately have a limited range of poses. I don't think they're too shabby for a first attempt at an army though
I've added some brighter, shiny colours to the fur as well. Let me know if you have any other ideas to make them unique!

Here are the rest of my bloodletters..
I've got just under half of them painted now. As you can see I'm using Caliban Green on their outfits to unify them a bit. My daemonettes have that too.
I've also started giving them names. The one holding the banner is called Dave. He just looked like a Dave.
I'm basing them in a similarly unique fashion that I think a) is more appropriate for entities of chaos than grass or sand, and b) is totally silly and was developed with the aim of humiliating my enemies.

And without further ado, here are my Daemonettes of Slannesh... Once again, sorry for the photo quality.
I like these models because you can do a lot with their hair and they all have very different outfits and poses. I was quite tired and not paying much attention when I was putting them together (The Office was on) so I struggled a bit with some of their positions, especially the legs, which looked odd, although the arms were equally as frustrating as all the shoulders are angled down so any upwards motion has to come from the elbow. I hope you can see what I mean from the photos.
I've also started naming these, but nicknames this time, and adding little details like a scar across the eye, or a tattoo to match the Icon. Again, I'm using the same green on their outfits to unify them a little.

So to summarise, here is my army so far.
I'm also planning on painting up this old vampirey guy to make a Daemon Prince on the cheap. But I need some design ideas!
What do people think? Bold colour? Rainbow effect like Lucarlkx suggested earlier?
I've left my army list somewhere.. but at some point I'll post what I'm hoping to build it up to and hopefully get your opinions on making a strong army
Thanks for reading so far!!

Thank you! I remember seeing your Tzeentch Daemons on here ages ago, and I used them as inspiration* for mine, but I couldn't remember where I'd seen it before, so I wasn't sure who to credit for the idea. (And yes, I realise the irony of praising you for the idea I stole when you're talking about how this makes your daemons unique...)
OP: Based on what you're saying, I'm guessing these are some of the first minis you've ever painted, in which case I have to say: Good job! These are far better than my early works were, and the freehand tattoos are better than a lot of my gaming colleagues can manage even now.
The basing style is certainly... interesting. To be honest, I don't really like it since it looks out of scale to me (in that the little confetti bits look like little confetti bits to me rather than the foot-long giant confetti they would be in scale), but it does look unique, and I gather that's what you're going for.
By inspiration, I do of course mean that I stole the idea wholesale.

I don't know whether you've already seen it, but I would recommend looking at this army for inspiration.

I would say you should paint all the weapons in fluorescent colours. It'll make them actually glow!

Good looking Daemons! If you mix white and a little water with the base colors, you can do some highlights on the skin and such to make it a bit brighter.

Liking the project, not really seen anyone take on a multi-coloured daemon army before Keep up the good work, and try to garner tips and tricks from the other wise and venerable dakkites.
As has been said, your painting ability after only painting a dozen or so models is at a good level, but there is room for improvement, which will come as your experience and feel for the models grows.
Subscribed so I can keep an eye on how things are going

Sorry my new job has massively slowed down my painting. But I just wanted to add a couple of photos to show the stage my army is getting to.
I've been practising using them in battle a lot more now and I think it's going to end up as an allied army between Chaos Daemons and Chaos Space Marines, but a lot heavier on the Marines than I first thought. My list has changed so many times now- every time I use them I re-think my strategies!
Any advice about army choices from either of these two would be appreciated.. I've tried using Lucius the Eternal and I like him quite a bit, especially since my opponent didn't realise the marines he travelled with included an Aspiring Champion wielding a Power Fist. Hilarity ensued....

Haven't updated since I was bought the Dark Vengeance box set for Christmas so here's a bunch of new photos of my army.
I've now got Lucius the Eternal to add to my army, which is now a mixture of Chaos Space Marines and daemons led by a Daemon Prince.
I have also been peer pressured into chipping the colourful bases away so I added golden glitter to the daemons' bases instead. Let me know what you guys think?
