Mission:

Deployment: Dawn of War.

Terrain: See deployment picture

Victory Condition 1: Each player places an objective for a total of 4 objectives. The team that controls the most objectives wins this victory condition. Fast Attack units are scoring. The ringers place each of their objectives behind two buildings on either corner of their deployment zone. We place one objective in our right corner behind some LOS blocking rocks and a second on the other side out in the open.

Victory Condition 2: Each team marks for death a single unit from each opposing detachment. The Team that kills more of the opponents marked for death units wins this victory condition. We mark their warbuggies and a Basilisk. They mark a kroot squad and a warrior squad.

*If you table your opponent then you get max points.

Pregame:

Spoiler:
Pregame Thoughts: The ringers brought a very fun list that has several units you seldom see in competitive play. They have also elected to go first due to fearing the Tau firebase, which means we will have final say on objectives and without any sky fire, our flyers should be quite safe. They still have a decent amount of ground firepower that can double out my broadsides and Git’s wraiths, but odds are in our favor. Our opponents look to be great guys so this should be fun.

Warlord Traits: I forego my warlord trait and Gits selects the book power that scores you an extra VP for each character you slay in a challenge. Little did we know that this trait had no impact on the game. I don’t recall their traits but they elect to forego one of theirs.

Night Fighting: Not on the first turn

Deployment: The picture below shows our respective deployments.

They win the toss and elect to deploy first. From left to right. PCS deploys on top of the building. Basilisk behind and vet squad out front. Lootas then the 30 man Shootas plus attached Big mek with both IS squads behind them. Then 30 man Sluggas with CCS behind them and finally the second basilisk behind the right building and the 15 man out front.

We castle on the right corner with the DL attached to the wraiths hiding behind the rock pile and a riptide behind them. To the right of them are my broadsides with my attached Chip-Commander and a riptide to the right of them. Warriors are in Night Scythes. Kroot are outflanking.

Marked for death... the two rokking buggies and the nearby basilisk in the foreground...

The riptide awaits the oncoming storm...

Turn 1: Opponent

Spoiler:
All 3 boy squads and Cans move and run forward towards the Tau Castle. Guard stays put. IG order “bring it down” on their respective squads. Orc Buggies move towards right most Riptide and fire into it scoring no hits. IG guard unit’s heavy weapons within range fire into my Riptides but either fail to hit/wound/or I make my saves. One Basilisk launches a shell into my clustered Broadsides…should have spaced them out in a line. It scores numerous wounds and I fail 3 saves, losing two Broadsides and a Marker Drone. Another Basilisk fires into the wraiths and slays one? Lootas fire into a visible wraith and score a wound…damn near each time he would roll a 1 on generating his # of shots.

KP 0-0

Turn 1: Steam Crons

Spoiler:
Commander selects tank hunter and jumps into the leftmost riptide. Both riptides nova charge their IA. Wraiths shuffle around to get better spacing and out of LOS from the lootas. Remaining broadside shoots and explodes a warbuggie, marker lights jump forward and score a hit on the nearest Basilisk; a few sluggas from the 15 man squad die in the process including their nob. Commander’s Riptide IA explodes the Basilisk with the help of rolling 2 dice, picking the highest for ordinance + rerolls from tank hunter. Second Riptide’s shot scatters. Riptides thrust back in the assault phase.

KP 1-0

The orks move out aggressively....

... and, it ends badly for them...

The turn in total.

Turn 2: Opponent

Spoiler:
Only the deftcopta comes in and it comes on next to our castle. Both riptides use their fusion blasters to intercept but only one manages to wound the copta. All 3 boy squads and Cans move and run forward towards the Tau Castle. Guard stays put. IG order “bring it down” on their respective squads. Orc Buggy move towards right most Riptide. Deftcopta and remaining buggy fire into the right most riptide and I fail one save. IG guard unit’s heavy weapons within range fire into my Riptides but either fail to hit/wound/or I make my saves. One Basilisk launches a shell into the wraiths but Git’s makes his saves this time. Lootas fire into a riptide but Riptide makes its saves.

Orks mug a riptide for 1 wound...

The whole turn... da boyz is gettin' close!!

KP 1-0

Turn 2: Steam Crons

Spoiler:
Kroot come in and outflank in our corner, firing into the deftcopta and slaying it. Doom Scythe and one night scythe come in. Night scythes moves towards the Basilisk. Doom Scythe moves towards the Killa Cans. Commander selects stubborn and his unit jumps towards the remains of the 15 man sluggas. Neither riptide nova charges. After some coaxing from the Tau, the wraiths jump towards the 30 man shootas. Night Scythe shoots into the Basilisk but only scores a HP, arcing lighting slays a few PSC and they fail morale and flee 6” backwards. Doom Scythe explodes all three Killa Cans, slaying a handful of shootas in the process. Broadside shoots and wrecks the second warbuggy; marker lights score 2 hits on the 30 man sluggas. Commander’s Riptide IA over charges and slays 7 or so shootas; Second riptide fires into the big group of sluggas and slays 11 or so. Riptides thrust forward in the assault phase I place the commanders unit in front of the small slugga squad with the second riptide behind and thus screened. Wraith charge into the shootas, losing one to overwatch. D-Lord challenges and a knob accepts but makes his MS roll. D-Lord slays him. Wraiths slay a handful of boys for only a single wound in return…but boys are still fearless.

KP 2-0

Riptides are chillin', enjoying the carnage.

The wraiths exit cover and head for the orks.

Wraiths do well in assault, killing a nob and multiple boyz... though they do take casualties & wounds in the process.

The turn before assault. Note the beautiful little string of exploding killa kans!

Turn 3: Opponent

Spoiler:
Sentinal outflanks next to the kroot. One riptide is in range to intercept with a fusion blaster but fails to hit the sentinel. PCS regroups and moves back up into the building. Vet squad moves towards the Doom Scythe. Sentinel shoots at the kroot, slaying one. Small slugga unit shoots at the commander’s unit but doesn’t wound. IG and Lootas open fire on the flyers but only score a single pen on the Doom Scythe, which is shaken. Basilisk launches a shell into the commander’s unit for no effect. Small slugga squad assaults my commander’s unit and loses a few boys in combat. They make their morale, but I then hit and run out of assault and move next to the building in their deployment zone. Big Mek challenges the D-Lord and takes a wound for his effort. Wraiths win combat and sweep the sluggas + Big Mek, consolidating towards the Infantry Squads. We score Head hunter.

KP 2-0

Turn 3: Steam Crons

Spoiler:
We are almost out of time. Other Night Scythe comes in and drops off the warriors onto the lower left objective. Other Night Scythe flies towards the Hell Hound, dropping off a warrior squad in front of their upper right objective to contest it. Kroot move and run towards our lower right objective. Not sure what the Doom Scythe did? Wraiths jump towards an Infantry Squad . Kroot kill off most of the command squad in the upper right corner. Night scythe explodes a Hell hound. Other night scythe in the upper left quadrant fails to take out the last Basilisk. My Broadsides and lower right riptide fail to kill the sentinel, denying us “hold the fort”. Warriors fire at one Infantry Squad and they flee off the table. Commander’s riptide kills some guys from the second infantry squad. Dice Down.

We win KP and we have both of our objectives whereas one of theirs is contested by the warriors and they are out of range of their second objective in the upper left hand corner. Both teams have enemy units in their deployment zone. Both teams still have half their troops. Both teams waved a warlord trait. We slew a warlord. We win 11-2.

KP 2-0

The wraiths and D-Lord plow the road for a squad of warriors to sneak in and steal the objective.

End game.

Closing Thoughts:

Spoiler:
One of our opponents was running the tournie as well as being the ringer if needed. They had decided not to bring a competitive list so as provide a more enjoyable time for the players they might be matched up against… as well as to bring several units that you seldom see in 6th edition. It was definitely more of a beer and pretzel game, especially given that the waitress was right there serving Git’s beer. It also didn’t help that their dice rolls were by and far below average, especially for the lootas.

Steam Crons MVP: Our mobile troops that benefited from going second. Outflanking kroot that scored our corner castle objective and the NS delivered warriors that both denied one of their objectives and scored our second.

Enemy’s MVP: Basilisks that took out a wraith and 2 Broadsides

OK, looks like my memory needs a correction. From the pics, the deftcota/warbike scored a wound on the rightmost riptide in Turn 2.

The Riptides and Drones were painted by CK Studios. All of the sexy necrons were painted by Gits.

Kinda seems like an unfair matchup, given the stark lack of terrain. Absolutely wide open kill shots for Tau, and Orks have to foot slog across an open valley.

It was player placed terrain. Each team took turns placing terrain in thier half of the board, you could place terrain staddling the centerline as long as the majority was in thier table half. Obviously, the Taucrons were not going to place any in the center. They did win the roll to select the first piece of terrain and ended up scoring 2 of the 3 LOS blocking pieces. They chose to use those to provide cover for the IG players troops and Basalisks. They were relying partially on the KFF from the Big Mek to provide a buble of protection for two of the orc mobs. Problem is Tau tend to ignore cover saves altogether.

Really, thier army was more of a fun list than a tournie list. No Nob Bikers, Vendettas, FW Artillery, ect that would have stressed our Tau Cron list.

I always try to bring silly fun lists to the local game store so I can dig it, but seeing the 1st pic in the pregame slide you just kinda cringe at whats obviously going to happen.

The armies look great BTW, Necrons are nice and unique.

It's worth pointing out that the ork army was the ringer for anyone with a bye for the round & as such, not über competitive.

Thanks for the compliment, the Crons were fun and easy to do.
