Subject: Dirtying up some old cardboard terrain

I have an ongoing project at the moment sorting out some suitable Epic terrain. I have a bunch of the ruined plastic buildings that came with the (3rd Edition?) Epic box set and a bunch of the cardboard buildings that came with the 2nd Ed Space Marine and Titan Legions box sets. The idea is that eventually they will all be based on foam board, which I am in the process of doing. The architectural aesthetic is fine; the two sets more or less match and look OK together - the problem is that the old card-stock buildings are just too clean and bright and don't quite fit in with the whole grim-dark aesthetic, I need to find a way of dulling them down and dirtying them up a bit, ideally without ruining them or making them look crappy. Any suggestions? I was thinking some sort of light stippling or something. Ideally, someone has done something similar before; re purposing the old Epic card buildings and giving them a new lease of life.

I would recommend first giving them a coat of matt varnish then airbrushing thin coats of blacks & browns & maybe greys in transparent layers.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Inks should work well as they are translucent. Acrylic inks thinned with media could be painted onto sections carefully to show weathering effects.

I haven't got an airbrush so am at a bit of a loss there but I am assuming a quick spray of purity seal or similar is a good base to start from? I will give KK's suggestion of using some inks/washes and see if that works.

You could also give weathering powders a try. Might work out pretty well.

I've been playing around with 6mm terrain I've not been weathering the buildings mind. Here's my Blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/300/356363.page#6327221. Lots of bodged Epic terrain on there. Tactical Command might have more stuff for you as well. Especially as they have a micro scale terrain forum.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.
