THE DEMONIC DEFILER PROJECT!
It's like the Devin Townsend Project, only less metal!
(Nothing is as metal as Devy... even a part spider, part machine warp daemon)

So this all started quite a while ago as some crazy idea for a massive coversion to count as a defiler using the Soul Grinder kit and the Arachnarok kit. A pretty big ask as i've never really done conversion work before, other than a couple of repositioned limbs on space marines, or weapon swaps. A few weeks of hard work later and BAM it all seems to have come together!
I'm absolutely stoked with it - and as a bonus i entered it into my local GW's conversion comp - and bloody won?!?!
\o/

Now just to work out what colour to paint him.. i was thinking possibly a pale purple??

Anyway, how to make this thing is actually a lot more simple than it looks, even if it is time consuming as all hell. It's basically the back end of the arachnarok kit with the soul crusher at the front. To get the two pieces to fit together you'll need to do a bit of cutting on the Arachnarok piece, then use a butt load of greenstuff to stick the together and start building a shape for the underside of the body.

All the soul grinder legs need to have the ball-ends cut off, as well as cutting them in half at the joints. Once it's cut then glued together you'll need to stuff the legs with green stuff so we can pin them to the body and pin the joints in their new positions - the way the legs are positioned out of the box don't work for this conversion.
Before you attach the legs, you'll need to carve the crap out of the original leg mounts on the arachnarok until they are nice and flat. Then it's just a case of working out how you want the legs to sit, trim to fit, glue, then fill gaps with green stuff.

The gun was made with some paper straw covered in liquid green stuff, with regular green stuff covering it, shaped into a wicked and natural looking gun which will be your battle cannon.

The head for the Aracknarok was glued directly onto the powerclaw for a menacing finish to the defiler.

Lastly, the marine in the claw is a combination of veteran bits and the outstretched arm from the Dark Vengeance Librarian.

I hope you all like the final product - any feelback would be greatly welcomed.

Nice work. The spider thorax goes well with the soulgrinder bits

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Thanks mate. Yeah I'm really happy with how well they work together. It'll defunately make a great centrepiece, provided I can paint it well enough. Haha

Congratulations on your first big conversion! It looks amazing! Where did you get the base? It seems familiar but I can't put my mind to it.

The base is the crashed Aquilla ship.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Much appreciated.
It's sitting in a display case at the GW at the moment, so paint will have to wait for a little bit, unfortunately.

And that most certainly is part of the crashed Aquila Lander i've used as the base. I was going to make a base out of MDF, but i happened to be cleaning up my scenery tub when i was thinking about it, then it hit me and, lo and behold, he fit on the base PERFECTLY.
He's been pinned to the base on one side, with glue only on the base side. This means i can take him on and off when i'm gaming if need be

Great conversion!
I was kinda like "A soulgrinder... with a spiderleg and cool cannon and... HOLYCRAP IT'SASPIDER!!"
I really appreciate the dying marine his outstretched arm is a nice touch.

haha yeah, i probably should have had the side on shot first
Also, it was kind of funny when i was deciding on the out-stretched hand, because i knew my DV Librarian would then be armless... but it's ok, he was a spare anyway haha
Now i just need to work out what chapter to make him...

I recommend building something out of the poor armless bugger, at the very least you'll produce a slightly unique librarian and at the most, another kickass conversion

Hells to-the yeah!
I'm already planning something in my head for him. Can never have too many librarians - especially in a dark angels force. Someone needs to find all those pesky fallen. haha

clicks thread.
"huh? its just a cool soulfgrinder holding a dead marine"
"wait, is that a spider leg"
scrolls down.

I really like the model and think this shows a ton of imagination. Going to be harder to grab cover, tho.

Thanks mate.

Thankfully i had the foresight to make him detachable from the base - so when i use him in games I'll most likely take him off, unless there is no point in it (ie, lots of low cover that isn't very densely spaced).
Without the base he's only a little taller than the regular soul grinder or defiler would be.
