I would simply glue sand to the board and drybrush.

I have seen some people just mix fine gravel with the base color you want, voila you have made your own texture paint. I would go with a really dark grey/brown and then drybrush it. After you go over it the first time you may want to add extra texture to some places, just not to much. Having a pretty clean table is nice so you can switch terrain around without it looking stupid or limiting yourself because of the table!

You could alter colour and texture of paint to delineate different types of area. Grey for urban or rocky and mixtures of green, brown and yellow for rural areas. It will end up looking a bit like a cow on its own, but with bits of scenery on thre it should look nice and varied. I guess one problem with texturing the board is that it makes it harder to put scenery on there, unless you have a fully modular/rectangular grid of scenery that you can put in the gaps between the textured bits.

I put sand down and painted over that, you could also flock areas for a grassy look.

I mixed sand with paint and applied it. Dry-brushed, coat of thinned PVA to lock it in place. Works for me. Good luck.

Hi , with a basic board you are gonna be adding scenery to if different arrangements I would personally :
- Brush board with slightly waterd down PVA
- Sprinkle generous amounts of sand all over , allow to dry overnight, shake off excess in morn.
- go to local £ shop and buy some cheap spray paints , grey's, brown's , green's for example.
- spray this is whatever pattern you like covering entire board and as said above this is a cheap way to denote areas on a board.
- drybush the diff areas with appropriate shades.
The use of spraypaints gives a real nice natural blended look to the surface , and like i say for boards i buy these 'army issue' spray cans from my local £ shop.
To finish i also bought a cheap spray bottle , kind used for watering house plants and in this i keep a 50/50 mix of pva and water. spritz this all over board to help seal it down when your paints dry.
