Hey all, need some advice. I'm having a hell of a time highlighting dark angels. The colors I'm using are Caliban, Warpstone, and Moot green. Right now they are based with black and caliban green colors, but it seems every time I try highlighting it looks like gak. Can anyone give me some advice on helping me out??

Do you know how to two brush blend? That would probably give you the best result letting you bring your colors from really muted up to a lighter tone.

I watched a tutorial on Youtube regarding two brush bleding. It kinda feels like a poor man's wet blending technique or a deluxe highlighting sort of thing with some feathering included.

You really need to thin down your paints and a tiny amount of drying slowed will help a lot. Acrylics dry crazy fast and if you don't thin and try this two brush blend thing you are gonna have the gak result again.

Here is a link to the video I watched and it seems legit

Got milk?

All I can say about painting is that VMC tastes much better than VMA... especially black...

it's not so much a "poor man's wet blending" its just another tool. Its great for highlighting where wet blending is fantastic for seamless transitions of colors over larger areas(like on a horse or gator model)

Picture might help so we can see how your highlighting is turning out. I would suggest making sure you're thinning your paints, if you aren't already doing so. It is time consuming but I just highlight thin layers at a time

ok, sorry for the delay. The first one is without anything just the green and gold on chest eagle. The others are a couple I finished. I think it's ok, but I think I did something wrong. maybe it is just me. now I don't know why they are so fething grainy, they looked fine when I previewed them.

Dakka gallery has been known to make stuff grainy.

It looks like you need to work on brush control first. your lines are a bit shaky and thickness needs to be more consistent. The way I achieve this is by putting less paint on the brush (making sure it is thin enough) and putting both of my hands in contact with each other and at least one on the table, its weird but it works to steady your brush. It will also help with errant strokes like on the red of his eyes.

Once you have that basic down your painting will improve dramatically.

if you are looking at line highlighting here is a great tutorial.

I agree with Darefsky, as you get more experience things will start to clear up and look much sharper. As for highlighting and blending I always love this explanation http://blog.brushthralls.com/?page_id=2650 I love it.
