Well, it looks like you've got the hang of it, but the models need a highlight to go along with the wash. Without it, the models just look flat.

They look great! Edge highlights would brighten them up too much and ruin the look IMO.

Yes I seem to find that too, I like my models to look Dark and Gritty.

I think the armor is just fine tbh. My only thought would be a highlight on the fabric. At least on the most raised areas.

Only thing I can suggest is a slight layer on the cloth. Just water down some of the original colour and layer it over leaving the wash in the recesses. Looks great for tabletop though

That fabric is ripe for a good dry brush. Given the texture, it will be a very effective highlight.

I think they look fine. You could highlight them to give them more contrast, but not really necessary. I'd probably do the hat on the Sarge with a more saturated red, something like Mephiston Red maybe.

Overall that's a good way to paint Cadians though, given you'll have another 50 to 100 to paint, you don't want anything too complicated like excessive highlighting.

Looks good to me if you're going for TT standard. If you're brave, I concur with the dry brush if you're too scared to do another layer or any sort of edge highlights.

I do think a drybrush would be hard to do well, my guess would be it would brighten the model and add contrast while simultaneously making it look messier.

Dry brushing is one of the easiest methods around. Just make sure you get enough paint off of your brush before you start. Better to get too much off and work your way up slowly than start with too much.

Drybrushing can look good and it's entirely possible to drybrush something so well it looks almost airbrushed... however for most people it just ends up looking messy. Drybrushing in a way that doesn't look messy is actually quite time consuming, as you typically have to build up several layers of drybrushes, starting off reasonably heavy and working your way to very light drybrushing.

IMO drybrushing is better suited to things like tanks where you have nice hard edges that you want to highlight in a way that looks slightly rough rather than cloth which doesn't have nice hard edges for the paint to catch on. Not saying it can't be done, but if you want it done right and not look messy, it is a slightly more advanced technique and actually rather time consuming.

Good stuff, which colours did you use? Is the beret from the scions?

Yes indeed that's from the scions box,

Paints:
Armour: thunder hawk blue
Fatigues: Rakarth Flesh (weird name)
Orange is Yriel Yellow washed with blood letter

All washed with a 1:1 of Nuln oil and earthshade

Thanks for all the suggestions I might try drybrushing one tommorow!
