LRBTs are certainly not bad but are they really that great?

Yes. LRBTs give you AV 14 spam and a useful long-range gun, two things that are very important when camping objectives at the back of the table.

By taking an all-tank army, you deny all enemy anti-infantry guns, but you will have real trouble if you encounter, say, Necrons.

Every unit has its counter. And the ability to entirely negate huge parts of an army is IMO more than enough to make up for the occasional problems with armies with tons of anti-tank units, especially since those armies aren't exactly helpless against other types of troops.

With the new vehicle destruction rules, LRBT's seem a good choice.
Before they were too weak against drop pod melta to the rear spam, but now?

How about some objective secured transports like Rhinos and Razorbacks.
Once they are in position and in cover, they can be quite durable.

I'm a big fan of Tyranid Warriors. Don't laugh!

They're versatile, capable of cc or ranged support, fearless, and cheap per wound. They unlock formations, fulfil troop requirements, and provide fearless to everything around them. They can be DS in, outflanked, or walk. They have ID weapons available as well as grenades (finally).

I've only ever had them ID'd iin CC, s8 ranged is always directed elsewhere

Noise Marines, Plague Marines, and SM Bikers are not troops. They are units from other sections that can become troops through an HQ choice. It's not hard, if you look at the top of the page it tells you what section they are from.

FOC changes allow them to be taken as troops.
It's not hard, you just have to read the entry in the relevant HQ choice

Then what about Dataslates, Formations, Codex Supplements, Forgeworld, etc. Would anything that gets obsec count? Those FOC swaps are going away, and if someone needs somebody else to tell them that SM Bikers are good, then they probably belong in an assisted living home.

But are they best? And why you would not count supplements?

I'm going to have to go with none other than crisis suits (ala FE). Durable (being a marine with 2 wounds), fast, maneuverable, and have an answer to almost any problem.

Necron warriors and Ork boyz seem like the best troops IMO. Necron warriors are a mainstay of most armies i've seen, and boyz are great for fielding a lot of slaughter.

Fire warriors are ok but are really just not great without support.

Eldar and Dark elder troops are pretty personalized, so they each have their uses.

Marines are too cost heavy and generic.

Nids are ok, but I find boyz to be better.

Tac marines. Especially ravenguard. Scouting rhinos are awesome. You controle the board turn 1. 3+ armor, ATSKNF, Krak nades - all you need for the role. Noone does it better and cheaper.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

In my opinion this thread is derailing with FOC gimmicks. Any troop choice that can't be taken as troops solo doesn't really earn the title of "best troop choice in the game". Troops that use synergy as a crutch doesn't work for me in this topic either.

If you took 500 points of a basic troop type only and pitted them against others armies of the same criteria I'm pretty sure Ork Boyz would win. The loss of mob rule has hit them slightly as has the nerf to the boss pole, still equivalent points of Ork boyz pitted against any other troop in the game I reckon would come out on top.

In this role Marines are not bad.
If you bring them into action, they can shine.
Marines are generally not easy to remove from an objective.
Clearing an objective is another topic and not meant to accomplish by basic Maines.

They are in contention for the worst troops in the game, so I can not agree with this at all.

It's easy to get tac marines off an objective. They can't fight back.

They're not good, but they're not even remotely close to being the worst troops in the game.

Good point, actually.

I keep forgetting that there's another page of troops in the DE codex.

I honestly forgot they existed too as a troops choice...

Good point
