Yeah, this is my current fix for my building stuff. It's a building/destroying stuff game set IN SPACE.
I bought this back in February and it has grown by leaps and bounds since then. Just a ton of promise. There are still some issues, but that's just life.
Currently I mostly mess around in Creative mode, building stuff - waiting for a more complete build before I spend a ton of time investing in survival mode again - when it came out I built a pretty extensive asteroid base. Now I am working on a new huge capital ship.
Anyone else playing this?
Here's a let's play
and a few videos of the things people have done - keep in mind that these are a smattering of videos from across multiple builds -
I plan on getting it once it's furher along in development.

A few pretty awesome updates over the last couple weeks, and a lot of fixes.
Factions
Factions in Space Engineers. Players can create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks and manage the relations between them (hostile/ally). Block ownership is determined by computers, so if players want to take over hostile blocks, they will have to replace the computers that are in these blocks. Ownership can be transferred manually by the owner. Blocks can be shared within faction members or everyone.
Spoiler:
Steering wheels, wheel controls
Steering wheels and wheel controls have been added in Space Engineers. Players can now build and control vehicles. Every block that is visible in terminal can be now displayed on HUD (set on/off on terminal screen).
Spoiler:
Batteries, Antenna Communication
Battery block and new power cell component have been added into the game. Communication relay makes now possible for signal to travel through multiple friendly Antennas; enemy signals that reach one antenna are relayed to all friendly players within your antenna network. You can merge ships while pasting in creative mode and we also added client-side saving and permanent death as a world options.
Spoiler:
And most awesome of all - Pistons, Blast door blocks
Pistons have been added in Space Engineers - they can be used to build advanced machinery. Also, faction founders and leaders can now enable auto-approval for new members. Players will now be able to see a notification on HUD when somebody is hacking/grinding their ship (does not apply to armors). Thrusters can be used without cockpit - through the terminal - which enables the option to create missiles with warheads, turret countermeasures, small drones which grind enemy ships by using grinder and other. Blast door blocks has been also added in the game; it's similar to armor, but thinner, so it can slide between two layers of armor (very useful for airtight door and hangar bays)
SPACE ENGINEERS - MAJOR GAMEPLAY AND FEATURE Updates
Picture
PRAGUE (JULY 29, 2014) – In the continuing effort to deliver the best gameplay experience for nearly a million players on PC, independent developer Keen Software House has updated their Steam Early Access hit, Space Engineers, with several major new features, including support for dedicated servers, player factions, hacking, tools for driving, and more. Keen Software House delivers weekly updates to Space Engineers every Thursday, offering new features, fixes, and more.
Space Engineers’ space-based sandbox offers a robust platform for creative gamers to build and maintain space stations and ships in a single- or multi-player environment. The game remains one of the top overall sellers on Steam and appears on the platform’s Early Access program. Space Engineers is available now at http://www.spaceengineersgame.com/buy.html or via Steam at http://store.steampowered.com/app/244850/ for $19.99 USD.
“A great Steam Early Access game must deliver on its promises to the community – the gamers who have taken the risk of buying into your vision – by continually growing and improving with new features, expansion of gameplay, and more,” said Marek Rosa, CEO and Founder, Keen Software House. “Over the past month, we’ve worked hard to deliver against that standard and we’re fortunate to have the smartest and most dedicated fans on Steam offering their insights and suggestions to shape the future of Space Engineers.”
Major game updates added over the last several weeks include:
Official Dedicated Servers/Hosts (commercial use): Dedicated servers allow players to connect to a third party host, rather than using a player-host, in a peer-to-peer set-up. This feature often results in faster connections and less lag.
Merge Blocks, Conversion of Station to Ship: Players can now permanently merge ships and stations of the same block size by using the ‘Merge Block’ feature. When a ship is merged with a station, the ship becomes the station. Stations can also be converted to ships, but the blocks that are partially inside asteroids will be damaged or destroyed.
Factions: Players may now create and join factions, determine ownership of blocks, and manage relations between them (hostile/ally); blocks can be shared within factions or with everyone; ownership can be transferred by the owner.
Hacking & Breaching: Block ownership is determined by computers, so if players want to take over hostile blocks, they will have to replace the computers that are in these blocks.
Steering wheels, wheel controls: Players can now build and control vehicles with the addition of steering wheels and wheel controls.
Batteries: The Battery Block enables players to store the energy generated by solar panels or reactors at an efficiency rate of 80%. The time needed for charging depends on the amount of energy available.
Pistons: Pistons is a new type of block which allows players to build even more advanced machinery.
Antenna Communication: Signals can travel through multiple antennas so players can receive a signal from any distance; broadcasting can be limited by player or by the power of the antenna.
Spectator mode: players can now learn from the community’s best by spectating their work.
I saw a Yogscast video on it and it perked my interest. I'd play it, but I don't think the laptop I'm on right now could run it well enough. So that probably means the usual, "Looks good. ...Good enough to pick up on a Steam sale that is". Not an immediate buy, but it looks like a decent enough game.

I thoroughly enjoy it - I mostly do creative mode to build big crazy ships and stuff, waiting for some truly huge maps before I start survival mode again. Updates are common - usually a week or two in between them, fairly good community interaction. Mods are now ready to go on the workshop so that ought to add a lot.

I'm going to be trying this out now

It's a fun game. I don't play it that often for some reason, though.
I think it's really more fun with friends, though. Maybe if there was a Dakka-specific server?
Thing is, joining servers/games is sorta odd- dependent on the person hosting to be in-world, which precludes having a world that's 'always there' for anyone to hop into. Also, a little small.
GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Probably not going to buy until I see an actual survive mode worth while, considering their reluctance to add oxyginated area's and atmosphere, I'm not really going to toss money to it incase they never do.
I think it's a lot more fun with friends. Alone it's not bad, but I have trouble finding direction. Sometimes literally.
That was a kind of frustrating feature the first time I played, as I think my friend and I spent about twenty minutes trying to actually find each other. Beacons are a must.
Can someone link a good tutorial on using blast doors and pistons? Started off a game as Lone Survivor, been building the platform in to a true station, and I want to make a nice 2x2 blast door for a small ship to go through so I have something to take to other asteroids for longer trips.

Really like it, but I felt so lonely in singleplayer survival, like, this game really captured how lonely it is to be the only person in a vast expanse of space, you really do feel alone
Think it's because the crafting takes a long long time, and there is no AI to make you feel less alone.
would love to get on some mulitplayer, just so it doesn't feel so lonely
And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

Feel like a bit of a plonker really, just remembered that on the advanced options, you can set how long welding/refining/assembling takes (which would probably solve my problem really)
Should have probably set those sliders a bit higher when I started the world really
THink it's fine as it is for multiplayer though, when there are a team of folks working on the same ships.

Yeah, the settings are definitely intended for multi.
For single, 1x is slooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, 3x is sloooooooooooow, and 10x is probably about right
